What phone does she have, you can do what i did. My Moms got a Nokia 5300, i setup gmail on the handset and the phones nice enough to keep the connection active allowing gmail to utilize its push function, works nicely. She is getting a BB end of next month, you can do what i did and sell her on the Pearl 9105, its old school meets blackberry. These old peoples biggest issues is the qwerty, you take that out of the equation and you've won like 90% of the battle. Also she has no choice in the matter, she is the 1 remaining family member without a berry and her sister, who normally is quite stupid went out and got 1 so she cant be shown up now can she.

Just to let you know, I am over 60 and I have a 9700 and wouldnt have anything other than blackberry! Oh, and I didnt have a problem with the qwerty keyboard, in fact it makes life much simpler ;)

Any feedback on how BB6 ..424 is behaving on the 9300 (Battery life, compatibility etc) - I have the file but am a bit aprehensive to update my BB9300 as its not a week old yet and am still enjoying it as is. Having played with OS6 on a Torch, I would like it on the 9300.

Interesting, never saw it on my 8520 or 9300.

The reason I remember is because when scrolling through old conversations it tells you at the top sent/received @ and the day/time. Before with the cursor it was easy to see which post the top bar was referring to, now a little confusing without it.

I heard that the 9300, 9105 might be able to upgrade to 6.1 when it comes out. It is a very big maybe...but a maybe regardless. :-)

448 still has memory leaks and does use a lot of mem but i never experienced that, since 424 though i been using shrink-os so i stripped out all the extra junk, cut it down by half.
Using 461 now and the memory leaks are completely solved, on 448 i used about 60-80mb memory, 461 i use 10-20mb.

Yes. Everything unofficial unless its been approved by your own service provider, MTN can void ur warranty for using a Vodacom update if they so wish.
Generally they wont do it unless its found that the software or teh update procedure was the direct cause of any fault, if its a hardware issure then they generally dont care what you did with ur software.

Is there an update for the Bold 8900? My girlfriend has one and is looking to update to OS 6. She's with Vodacom. What's the best way to do so and is the update even available for her phone?

No such thing, never going to happen. The 8520 is already to weak to supports OS6, the 890 iss about 2 years older.

9300, 9100, 9105, 9700, 9800 and 9780 are the only phones currently supporting OS6, some newer ones will also, but they busy switching to 6.1 which has even higher requirements, its like that the 9780 is the only phone on that list that will be able to make that upgrade.

If you GF wants OS6 the first requirement would be a new phone, 1 from the above list, the 9300 is a curve like hers, you can get the cash for about 2500, its about the cheapest way to go about it.

Honestly, even if you could somehow install, the memory requirements alone would make it a miracle if that phone even completed the boot sequence, and then if it did it would be slow as all hell.

Question, does that phone even support OS5?

Mostly that no current market phone will support it, it will have all the OS functions, security and support of the playbook and it will have full android app integration.
Its based on the same QNX code that they using to code the playbook on.

It's not - they are releasing what would have been 6.1 as OS 7, and it's still BBOS-based.

Check your info, OS7 is the handset version of the playbooks OS, they redoing the whole OS, playbook OS1 and BOS7 are both using a new code base.

They cannot achieve the functions in OS7 without changing the code base, its alla available on crackberry, they scrapped 6.1 as it was going to be an exact scaled down version of PBOS1 including all its limits. OS7 with have the full android support which is the same plan for the playbook upgrade, possibly OS2.

6.1 was a rush patch update that was actually released on 2 or 3 CDMA handsets which work very few places outside USA.

Its all over gsmarena and crackberry. Its why current devices are locked to 6 as 6.1 and 7 are not compatible and require much more powerful hardware to run the new code and functions.

Guys i need some help please.
I have a Bold 9780 with firmware version 6.0.0.246 on, this is the latest one on vodacom's website. I want to know if I will have a problems if I upgrade it to the latest OS available worldwide, version 6.0.0.570.
Please also any info on what is the best, stable and battery friendly version that we in SA can use at the moment would be great.

Thanks

You should be fine with that. I've found build 570 for the Torch to be improved over earlier builds.

What he said. OS 7 is just OS 6.1 rebranded. OS 8 will probabaly be QNX based.

I got the Torch 6.0.0.576. I'm getting a little smoother functionality and my browser is actually functioning a little faster (not exceptional but then again the BlackBerry Default Browswer has been known to be poor in performance). I must say though, at least the pop-up blocker of the browser is effective - it actually stops those annoying pop-ups. It was annoying clicking a link and having a new tab open that had nothing to do with the page I was looking for.

In case no one has heard of it, you can check out www.blackberryos.com. They have updates as they come (leaked) and some other pretty helpful hints and even cool downloads.

.600 is not easy on the battery I have found. Though your BB browser is updated and maybe some stability tweaks. TBH i prefer the original 2.94 to .570 seems that our official updates for the networks are released really late. I think I just may wait before .600 is released as an official in SA before I upgrade as I do not have the time or the confidence to follow all the steps to upgrade "unoficially"

Some service providers block the service books for certain things, like for example wifi hotspot.

I think its because they can't distinguish between hot spot data and on device data. So you wont even see the hotspot option on your device.

I saw on Crackberry that you can install the service book yourself but VC will remove it every time you restart your phone.

It wont work in countries that actually use true BIS, only in countries where they have fixed data caps for BIS as they do not care how you use your limited data quantities.

th doesnt sound good at all. on the blackberry site there is a software download feature. u put in your phone, etc. you download the update. when you plug your phone into the desktop software theres an option to update your OS. i think it searches your drive and finds the new OS. backups everything. installs and restores. was painless when i did it.

you dont pay for the software downloads. i suggest you follow that up pronto. i actually used my wifes (9300) software. didnt need an update. just worked.

No. I am trying to download the "Desktop Manager" that I need before I upgrade my OS and this seems impossible.

The CD that came with it takes ages to "Initialize" then all it shows is a link to a website to download the DM.
It downloaded a cab file but when I click on it, it starts installing the software. When that is done, it starts to install MS dot net 3.5 SP1 and in brackets it shows (Web Download) Nothing downloads. Did a manual download and it shows that it is installed.
Did it over again and it got stuck at the same place. MS dot net 3.5 SP1 downloading but nothing.

Why don't they just put this on the CD as other cellphones do?

I don't want apps. I want the BB Desktop Manager. It is not there.

The issue seems to be with the MS Dot Net Framework 3.5. A common problem.

You need Windows Installer 3.1 or later.
You need Internet Explorer 5.01 or later.
You need a web installer MS Dot Net Framework 4.

I have to download all this before I can get BB Desktop Manager to work.

I have already used 650 MB's. Eish.

You can get it from Vodacom website or perhaps your own SP. There will be a list showing the software applicable to your device. You can just delete the Vendor File if not with VC.
You can only do this via a computer.
