Just get 3x2GB and save yourself the trouble of upgrading ram for the next 3-5 years.

Lol, budget doesn't allow 3x2GB, only 2x2GB or 3x1GB

So, 4GB in dual channel or 3GB in tri channel?

2x2gb. The difference between dual and triple channel are basically unnoticeable.

I always end up upgrading in 3 months or less

Then get the 2*2 (not 4*4) and upgrade again later!

which i7 are you referring to?

remember that you get the "new" i7 which is optimized with a dual memory controller on board.. this is the socket 1156 (i7 860 & i7 870)

the older i7 is optimized with a tripple memory controller on board... this is the socket 1366 (i7 920 & i7 950 etc etc)

I would imagine this would make a difference

thoughts?

I dont know much on the socket 1156 ddr3 memory situation, but if you ARE referring to the socket 1366 then do yourself a favour and read this.

yes its, long but you will learn a crap load... i did! insane article! :)

Just curios, but isnt the Core I7 LGA1366 Triple channel DDR3 therefor 3 modules would run better than 2?

However the newer Core I7 LGA1156 done away with one chanel and is now dual channel DDR3, therefor 2 modules would be better.

So it depends on your socket. If I am correct

Only in the past year...

I was going to do an upgrade every 6 months :D then I found out I'm better off spend the money on something else.

Like what :/

Ok, so i've decided if i can't get the OCZ tri channel kit i'm after i'm just going to get 2x2GB Corsair. Doesn't seem to be much of an improvement from dual to tri channel

4GB is better than 3GB no matter the channel. So get the 2x2GB set. It will also allow you to upgrade. Just make sure you get the same sticks when upgrading because different brands tend not to "talk" to each other so good.

Ok, so i just got some good news and might be able to squeeze a bit more for a 3x2GB kit. Can anyone recommed a 1600MHz CL8 or lower kit that's around the R1.6k (give or take) mark

I remember Esquire had a Patriot kit for R1399 ex vat when they first started selling them, but they were CL9 and i'm a bit wary about Patriot
