Steyn to Strauss, OUT, gone! What an incredible start! A back-of-a-length delivery on the pads, Strauss played with an angled bat to deflect the ball into the leg-side, but Hashim Amla, under the lid at backward short leg, swooped superbly with his right hand, and clung onto a blinder!

AJ Strauss c Amla b Steyn 0 (1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.

JAJAJAJA!

:) Well I thought Steyn was going to be as good as Waqar when I first saw him, but our bowling coaches have been ruining him.

I also feel he bowls too short half of the time. FFS he can swing it miles but nooooooo in SA swing bowling is a bit of a lost art :(

He either took a batch of wickets, or he got klapped around a bit.
He bowled some amazing spells in his career.

Lmao @ this:

Sky have just declared that Strauss is the first Englishman to fall to the first ball of a Test match since Stan Worthington in 1936. Incredible. I thought Mike Atherton did so every other game. Mind you, he did bat at 2 a lot ...

I fooking hate trott. He should be called twat.

Ps I hope we get cook, as he has been looking very good (batting wise you homophobes!) the last two test matches and if he gets going we could be in for a long fielding session.

Doubt his batting has the same potensial... and if you ask me his bowling is also not a match winner most of the time. But hoping for another Kallis is like hoping for another Sobers and that I doubt will happen for another 20 or 30 odd years :(

Morkel to Cook, OUT, a review coming up, as Cook is given out lbw ... it could be marginal ... He took a while to ponder the option, but it seemed to the naked eye to be quite high, and potentially outside leg... this is absolutely crucial ... and there are so many permutations. No inside-edge, surely that was a no-ball!

what's funny is at Newlands in the last over 5th day, the fielder stepped on the ball to stop it, studs and all. I was there, I saw it. Didn't make the news though did it, i wonder why...

because he got cramp because he was too unfit to play at the time!

37.4
Steyn to Bell, OUT, castled! And that is exceptional bowling. Steyn has been swinging everything away, and this one zips back off the deck, through the gate, and into the stumps! High quality fast bowling, and there's very little that Bell could have done about that

IR Bell b Steyn 35 (86b 6x4 0x6) SR: 40.69

37.3
Steyn to Bell, no run, outside off, too wide to tempt an indiscretion. So it doesn't

37.2
Steyn to Bell, no run, fuller length and sharper swing. Bell is slightly squared up but digs the ball out nonetheless

39.6
Steyn to Broad, 3 runs, Broad has an airy drive at this, slapping it with no timing in the air past mid off

The last time England had a real horror, in Headingley 2009, Swann and Broad had a happy-clappy partnership at the end, flaying the ball around. Different situation here, in the first innings, how will they play?

39.5
Steyn to Swann, 1 run, oh close again! Full and swinging away, Swann has a dart and it flies just short of Duminy diving forward at gully

39.4
Steyn to Swann, no run, outside off again, Swann is relieved to get a sighter, leaves it all alone

39.3
Steyn to Swann, no run, good ball, full, swinging away a fraction, Swann leans forward and defends solidly

39.2
Steyn to Swann, no run, outside off stump and left alone

Strauss staring into his laptop to see if he can find any answers. He's probably reading Cricinfo, so I'll tell him. Probing bowling and loose shots. Anyway, here's Swann, who'll have a dash.

39.1
Steyn to Prior, OUT, England collapsing here! Prior gone! Short ball, Prior tries to pull it away but it catches the gloves and goes slowly though to Boucher. Easy catch and South Africa are all over England here. "So much for your quiet hour," says Miller.

MJ Prior c †Boucher b Steyn 14 (25b 2x4 0x6) SR: 56.00

Why don't the weather men work with the match officials to move it to another place. Or will the fans be refunded their money if they paid for the rest of the test match?

You cant change a test match 1-2 days before its about to start. The organizers have to do so much stuff, organise parking, police, booze, food etc.

The pitch has to be prepared, the grounds have to manned. The teams look at the pitch and see how its going to play, see what team they gonna put out.

Imagine going to wanderers and having a beautiful batting pitch and you bring your big guns. Then 1 day before you gotta move to centurion where its a spin fest, wont work.

I just hope smithers has been watching the weather, we basically have today to win this match or atleast post a good score of 450 if possible, if we cannot get a good RR and build a good lead today i cannot see how we will win with the weather looking bad from tomorrow into monday.

It was not easy batting late yesterday and even more so in the afternoon after some rain and under floodlights with the red ball. We did well to escape without losing a wicket.

Agree that we must weather the storm this morning and then attack when conditions are better for batting in the afternoon.

Lol. This might now look to some people as being a 200 run wicket... its not.

It is a 300 run wicket, england fscked up. Go look at the wickets that fell yesterday, only 2 (max 3) was because of the pitch / weather conditions.

If SA can post 300 or even 350 I am sure we can bowl England out for the same and we will then chase around 200.

Devil regardless if this is a 200 pitch or not, we need a victory and it looks very likely the match will be interrupted by rain.

We cannot plod on at 2 runs an over because we need a win, so either we must play positive and score fast or we lose the series.

I am not saying swing at every delivery but i am saying let's not block 9 out of 10 deliveries :D

Yes I agree but seeing as we basically are 150 behind after only 1 day we don't hae to panic.

But on this pitch you have to play positively else you will no score.

Sidebottom to Smith, no run, width, and that's a massive appeal! I'm sure there was a noise, and the England fielders are adamant. But they've had to call for a review. Smith climbed into a wild cut, but that's been given not out by umpire Harper, who apparently says he could not hear a noise. Well, that was the only evidence that could have given the decision! Big moment, and conceivably a let-off

Alf normally i would agree but the weather forecast suggests we may not have the full 5 days to wrap it up. So it would really be bad if only get a 50/70 run lead and lose a day and half to weather and have no chance of winning.

Rather try get a 150 lead today, declare and try bowl em out or something. Maybe we get lucky and lose no play to the weather but that looks unlikely to me.

SA v England, 4th Test Day 2 Commentary

Over 48 Broad 0-1-0-4wd-0-0-0: 166-1 - Broad starts the afternoon session with a couple of hostile short balls to Smith, who fends the second slightly awkwardly into the legside. Short-leg and leg-gully in place for Amla, so the method of attack is clearly going to be the same. Overdoes it, though, with one that bounces miles over Amla and Prior to the boundary. Signalled as wides as well. The length ball is the surprise delivery and Amla, back in his crease, defends at the last moment and gets a thick inside edge into the legside that causes brief excitement from the cordon that the leg trap might work. Looks a bit of a desperate scheme to me. Probably because England are and it is.

Lunch: Graeme Smith is once again leading from the front after surviving a controversial caught-behind review where doubt has been cast on the quality of the information made available to the third umpire. But Smith has stepped on the gas after getting past the new ball and hasn't let Swann settle. South Africa now just 20 runs behind and surely heading for a series-levelling victory that few could honestly argue isn't thoroughly deserved

Over 56 Sidebottom 0-4-0-1-0-1: 197-1 - Back-to-back hundreds for Smith! He gets there with his 16th boundary, cut away with authority behind point. It's his 20th Test century and, although it feels like it, not all of them have been against England. He adds a single to deep square-leg and Amla another to deep point in a weary-looking comeback over from Sidebottom, whose lack of recent bowling must surely become a factor at some stage if it isn't already.

The sooner we get the pink ball going in test cricket the better. Also I prefered the old system were the batsmen decide if it was too dark or not. Had that been in place I am 100% sure amla and jk would have stayed out there a bit longer.

The weather will make it difficult we need to get a 250-300 lead in good time and hope we can have enough time to bowl them out again. The benifit with the rain is it keps the pitch green.

I do not think we need a 200-300 run lead, go out get a 100-150 lead and put england in.

We cannot afford to go into day 4 still batting and rain decides the match. Get england in as soon as possible and bowl them out.

The sooner we get the pink ball going in test cricket the better. Also I prefered the old system were the batsmen decide if it was too dark or not. Had that been in place I am 100% sure amla and jk would have stayed out there a bit longer.

I think it should be played with a colour changing ball tbh. Like different layers of pink, green, blu, red, gold etc... that are revealed through wear and tear

Johannesburg - England coach Andy Flower criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday after South Africa captain Graeme Smith survived a controversial umpire review decision in the fourth and final test on Friday.

Smith was on 15 when he slashed at a wide delivery from Ryan Sidebottom and the fielders were convinced he had edged the ball to keeper Matt Prior, calling for a review after umpire Tony Hill gave the batsman not out.

Third umpire Daryl Harper then upheld Hill's decision and Smith went on to make 105 as South Africa ended a rain-interrupted second day on 215 for two, a lead of 35 runs.

Flower said Harper erred by not turning up the volume on his feed from the stump microphone, adding the England camp could clearly hear an edge on their television sets in the changing room.

"I've seen the match referee [Roshan Mahanama] a couple of times today," Flower told reporters. "The first meeting was to clarify the process the third umpire went through in making his decision.

"The match referee told me the third umpire has a different audio feed to the television stations but on subsequent investigation we discovered this is not correct. There is one audio feed for everyone.

"Mr Mahanama then said Daryl Harper had not switched the volume up on his microphone because they hadn't deemed it necessary, which is why we heard the nick but the third umpire did not," added Flower.

"If the incident had not happened in such a serious match I would have found it amusing but it is very disappointing and incidents like these do not reflect well on the ICC (governing body)."

England's coach said the umpire review system ran the risk of becoming illogical due to inconsistencies in its application.

"There are a couple of things which I find illogical," said Flower. "The first is the system is not used for no-balls and both Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Smith have been dismissed off no-balls in this series.

"The other inconsistency is that before the series Dave Richardson [ICC general manager - cricket] and Roshan Mahanama said in the absence of snicko and hot-spot (technology) they would use an increased volume on the stump microphones.

"The fact that today they would not turn up the volume is very disappointing. Our report on the umpires will be the forum through which we take it further," said Flower.

"Of course mistakes happen, we make them every day, but when there is no logic or reason to them it is very frustrating."

Smith was non-committal over whether he edged the ball.

"There was definitely a noise but I didn't feel I touched it," said the opener. "Maybe I did, maybe I didn't, but it's not my job to discuss the third umpire.

"To cry over spilt milk is not right, it shouldn't be an issue and we should just get on with the game."

England lead the series 1-0.

They do have a point in this case. If mister harper forgets to have his mic turned on when we are bowling and he misses and edge, there will be big trouble.;)

Fine that he missed it for england thought.:D
