Sorry for the noob Q but to get the wimax option you need a wimax modem, do you get generic modems or do you have to buy a modem that will only work on the screamer network?

Don't let a ISP ever come back to me with contention issues and not being able to provide the service I pay for. They will be dropped instantly or at their latest billing cycle.

Yes and blame Telkom for that. If customers felt that they were treated fairly and not ripped off, consumer sentiments would be quite different in this sector.

I agree, going higher contention ratios will just be shortsighted.
They will loose customers very quickly as well as do irreparable damage to their brand name.
HIGH Contention ratios = BAD IDEA!

For R100 extra I can get chilli's package which includes two concurrent connections. I think I will test Chilli's package before I throw myself at this one. In the case of chilli, two friends can share costs and end up paying R250 each for unlimited and get full line speed when the system allows...
There is the chance chilli will be able to do load balancing with channel bonding on a DD-WRT v24 SP2 box... I'll test that first... but...
So far it's chilli I think....
I agree, for now im going to go with chilli. I prefer their offer. I'm just hoping i get a full 40K at night.

Well if Screamer decides to spearhead pricing like they are doing now, then maybe some form of concrete ISP/brand loyalty would emerge.

Well I signed up, waiting for the username and password, and will then experiment. The only thing that I am hoping for, is that I won't get harassed by emails telling me I am "using my connection excessively", and I only do about 80gigs a month on 384 currently with uncapped express

This won't change, even oversees we are seeing more and more throttling and fair capping of high bandwidth products.
Just look at the Cable row going on in the US and Canada. People are being capped at 60 to 100 GBs.

Telkom don't have the monopoly on underhand business dealings. Blame whoever the account is with ..... then kick telkom for line rental.:D
This cda character is apparently a free lance hack who tries to put a downer on anyone.
Stop pulling misinformation out of your ass Playoff, you have no idea who I am.
Screamer have still never apologised or even commented regarding the horrendous service I got, and zero connectivity I had over a 2 week period. When I eventually got called by their CTO, and asked why it took so long all he could to me was "I only heard about it 2 days ago".
Yeah, sure, Neotel's service is 100 times worse. I don't care.
Every time I phone Screamer (which has been due to frequent and serious downtime), I get the SAME person answering the phone. What is that? Coincidence? Bad luck? I doubt it.
The last time I phoned for yet another "Upstream issue." I asked for a reference number and the guy seemed almost confused that I should ask for such a thing - I'm guessing their general support work flow is to bat customers away with stupid answers and never log a ticket. I sat on the phone for 10 minutes while he chicken-typed a ticket and gave me a reference number. Two days later I get called in response to the voicemail I left that same day because their other phone number just never got answered. Same guy calling me (coincidence again??), couldn't even remember that he had already logged a ticket that same day...
I'm not saying Screamer is the worst, when it works it does so fairly well. I'm saying I have serious doubts regarding their ability to handle such a large influx of customers. I'm also saying their customer service is abominable, and their technical people are cowboys who just change things randomly and do "maintenance" in the middle of the day.
Perhaps that's acceptable to Playoff, well good for him. Companies are measured on their screw ups, not their fan clubs.
Plus, I'm hardly the only one:

Well they did specify this in the article :"Screamer has stressed that although this offer has no cut off date, Screamer will not over contend its bandwidth. “In other words first come, first served,”"
So I assume, that when contention starts coming into play, they might stop their uncapped adsl signups (oh please not even I believe this, but am hoping)

Their upstream bandwidth might be unshaped, but would their ADSL service be unshaped - thats another question. I'm assuming they do shaped the bandwidth to some extent, by using proxy services and ensuring their upstream bandwidth is not consumed by pirate junkies (thats P2P traffic).

Im sure they meant unshaped in the conventional term :)
If this is unshaped on most ports and gives good latencies on wow, im say ciao to vodacom...Thats a promise. :) Im not too stressed about P2P. :p

In the immortal words of Asok: I'll bet it includes the word "bag".
Everything is good and well, but THE SPEED OF YOUR INTERNET is not really the main factor, it is the QUALITY. Which almost no one addresses.
OpenWeb & Gamco & ... resells Vodacom Business ADSL Uncapped. Which has a semi-high contention ratio, unless you pay more to get a lower contention ratio.
Screamer claims to go over their "own" seacom segment.
And Digichilli, I don't know.
But, e.g. I'd rather pay 1mbps uncapped @ R3000pm for premium bandwidth than R1000pm for 4mbps uncapped for Sowetan-classed high contention ratio bandwidth.
Can someone post the contention ratio's & QUALITY of bandwidth of these providers.

Got to agree there, I am much less inclined to move until I see these figures. Won't stop me moving, but it would definitely break the inertia faster.
Having said that though I would rather have option 'C': premium bandwidth at R500.

Well, I hate to be the one to gloat... but.... :D
Um, I hate to rain on anybody's parade... but the price war started a few months ago when some ISPs started breaking the R70 per Gig barrier. It has been stuck at R70 per Gig for more than two years now. Suddenly we started seeing R50 per Gig... and now R30 per Gig. Looks like this price war is well into its third month now!
Bring it on!!!! Whoo hoooo!
The price for the other ISPs will probably settle around R45 to R50 for another month or two... and then when more Seacom bandwidth starts coming online it will slowly move down to the R30 mark (where Afrihost will have been the market leader for several months).
By this time next year, the price will be R20 or R10 a gig for International! I love it!!! :D
Your posts are very pro-seacom and pro-seacom-will-lower-prices.
Just take note - if it does not happen a lot of people are gonna be looking for you in order to bash your kneecaps.
Sorry dude, those numbers was already expelled by the same company that quoted those numbers. There is another thread where we are forewarned that that will not happen ANYTIME soon. We must be patient ... for another 10 years. Only Gary seems overly optimistic, some person is going to be very dissapointed very soon. We had the same promisses a few years ago and suddenly it became worse as Telkom changed the rules (Capping was introduced) to rape us to death WITH the GOVERNMENT and the DOC as backup to ensure we pay for their overseas mansions.
So please by all means BE OPTIMISTIC but excuse me for being downright pessimistic as all I see is $Dollars in the providers eyes. We WILL be shafted with government approval untill at least after 2010, more likely 2020 which when by then the Chinese run the show here and the rest of Africa.
I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!
hahaha... actually I was wrong. I predicted R30 a gig by the year end and they are already at R23 per gig.

At this rate, Vodacom are going to loose all their customers that do not need mobility.
Before this whole story started, Vodacom HSDPA was the cheapest 2GB arround @389. ADSL was more expensive if you included line rental, adsl and bandwidth, but now, ADSL and Screamer's WiMax is far cheaper.

Yea but according to some seacom is our saviour zenbaas, looks to me like things are not going to get way cheaper.
That price for 256 at 500 bucks is decent though, running news servers 24/7 would get you around 80gb a month for 500 bucks. Granted you would not be able browse lekka with news servers/torrents sucking all that bandwidth :D.
Pretty good. The price of 1024 uncapped is rather shocking when you consider openweb is cheaper and you have 4 times the speed, so i cannot explain how seacom is going to save us when they cannot even beat openweb's 4 meg uncapped.

Hi all, newbie here.
I have just tried to register and noticed the following,
http://196.25.27.121/adsl_ppp.asp - non secure page used for ADSL sign up.
It requires all personal info, ID number, phones addresses etc and 2nd page asks for full banking details to setup direct debit and it is not SECURED.

I've been on a 4MB ADSL line since I arrived in SA - and before that, on an 8MB uncapped line in the UK. Tempted to switch to Screamer, just cannot live with caps any longer, it's suffocating.
One question to those of you who are on 384k lines: by far my most important application is Skype and iChat (on the Mac) for video chatting. How does a 384k line stack up? Is (half-decent) video chatting even possible with that little bandwidth? Cheers
It's "ok" on 384. I chat to my folkes and they are on a 384 liine, it's not smooth 100% of the time, but it's not too bad.

Yup seacom have failed SA or SA have failed seacom.
Hopefully they will do something soon and not take a year because damn they went live 2 months ago!!!!!!!!!!!
That is 2 months!!!!!!!!!!!!! not 2 days but 2 flippin months!!!!!!!!!!
Gary stick this in your pipe and smoke it. http://www.seacom.mu/news/pdf_articles/TTCL%20PRESS%20RELEASE%203RD%20OCT%202009-1.pdf
5 days man!!!!!!!!!!! It took them 5 days to go live and drop prices, 2 months later we still wondering. Yea things take time in Good ol SA for sure.
So tanzania can go live in 5 days and we cannot even get a date as to when seacom will go live in SA.
Yea gary good that you are optimistic man cause that just makes me think it could be another 6-12 months and who knows if they ever actually land.
5 days!!!!!! That is amazing.
Hmmmm, killa... here we are one month later.

I have sent an Email to Screamer 15min ago but as yet no answer. Please be aware of this as this to my understanding is a HUGE security risks!!!!
I thought that was a bit off as well.
Will Screamer offer pre-paid with roll-over anytime soon? I think the cheapest ATM is Afrihost's for R49?

I think you missed this post :
not really, you can have the new adsl active without any installation charges, just a few loopholes:
1) when you apply for the line, do not apply for the adsl. just apply for the normal line only, and ask for closer 2, which costs an additional R26 per month, but the installation charge will be waived. you can cancel the closer option as soon as your line is installed.
2) after your line is installed, apply for adsl self installation. this does not attract an installation charge because no technician needs to come out to your place, everything is done remotely or whatever, and once your adsl is active setting up from your end is easy, or just ask for help from this board.
3) speed up your installation time by calling them everyday to ask about progress. they'll speed up your installation just so you can stop calling them :D
AntiThesis
16-11-2009, 01:18 PM
No hang on - surely that can't be right? You're still limited by one single line aren't you? So you and a neighbour could have 1 pc each @ 256k but if you run both connections (through PPPOE) yourself it'd give you half your line speed potential wouldn't it?
Jumping ship already - just waiting for chilli to get back to me as the 2 concurrent is what I want :D

coming home from Mabula and driving through Bela Bela (Warmbaths) this morning, I saw Pink street pole ads for this Screamer Promotion. Wasn't sure what it was, but I did see the uncapped mentioned. I was gonna check out the link when I got home. But if they are advertising it in all the little dorpies then these guys must be hoping for some serious business!

on the note of high cost of DSL and line rental and having to have both just to have DSL... It amazes me that Interconnection rates has been tackled and nothing has been done about Telkom raping us with its Line & DSL cost! Its High time this gets addressed!

There's been a lot of talk about Telkom increasing line speeds lately; a few people are (apparently) trialing it right now. When these upgrades go through, what will it mean for these new uncapped offerings?
@howzit: Will you increase your speeds to match the new lines or will we be stuck with faster lines but slow packages?
We do not rely on Telkom to tell us what your line speed is and we do not automatically upgrade/degrade your contract with us.
If you change your speed on your ADSL line then you need to actively inform us and request a change of your ADSL broadband contract with us.

I fully understand whay you are saying. But remember that minimum ADSL speed is 384 right now. So if in the future they (telkom) do away with the 384 as the base. And other ISP's start basing packages on 512, will you follow suite or not?
From what you say, regardles of any of changes, packages will start at 384. Or is this just another bridge to cross at a later point when relevant?

This may have been discussed/answered already in this thread but I'm loathed to wade through 29 pages:P so:
Anyone know if Screamer Unlimited ADSL supports multiple concurrent connections?
I'm gonna guess no, since there is no explicit mention of it on their site, but maybe the Screamer rep can give us a definitive answer (if it has not already been provided)?

Yeah, Screamer looks like the OMG deal, but I'd like to drop a little math in here.
For starters, no time-throttling looks great, but I don't see that Screamer lets you use your full linespeed after hours - which, say, Axxess does. So in doing the math:
Axxess Uncapped Fibre Express+ thingy at 512kbps is R1499/month. This is the package I have. After 10gb usage in 10 days, they throttle you to 256kbps in the daytime, with your full linespeed after hours.
Screamer 1mbps, R1499/month, with a flat 1mbps rate day and night, 24/7.
Telkom Faster is 1mbps, Fastest is 4mbps, and the price difference is about R90/month (http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/adsl.html).
Assuming, since you're already spending close to R2k/month on phone line rental, adsl upgrade and package, that you spend an additional R90 on a 4mbps line, the difference between Axxess 512k and Screamer 1mbps is huge.
As in, titanic. Disregarding the 10gb you get at 512kbps for the Axxess package, it works out to nearly DOUBLE Screamer's capacity in a given week. Here's a picture that explains it: http://files.arcane.co.za/axxess.png
(3.2mbps is the max I get on my line - YMMV, but I did do this analysis with intent to upgrade my ADSL) (Also feel free to doublecheck my numbers - It's a slow day today, me included :/ )
I know, in my case, that I'm out of the house during peak hours. Mornings, nights and weekends - the only times I really use my connection - it's really fast, averaging 400kB/s (Bytes, not bIts).
So R2000/month for Axxess, or R1910/month for Screamer, you can kinda see why I'll be sticking with Axxess for now.
Unless, of course, if Screamer lets me use my full 4mbps line after hours at no extra charge. Then it's not even a contest ;)

After surfing thru the screamer website I decided to call them about the wimax unlimited because i'm seriously sick of paying telkom for the voice line that i don't use, and i was going to take the once off rental option (yea R2999 and the equipment stays theirs). This sort of pays for itself over 10 months, then I'll have free line rental.
My only question was damage to the equipment which is not mine, screamer still owns it but if it is damaged I will have to pay for it?????!!!!!!:eek:
Now how does that work? If my telkom cable is stolen telkom, tho very slow at it, must fix it up for me at no cost, if it got hit by lightning or broken by a plane crash, they must fix it.
Howzit, pls explain the idea behind this, and if I'm suppose to pay R3000 for something and it remains screamers then the R3000 should be deposit otherwise I just see loads of BS.
Dumb thing is you can't pay by credit card. I only use credit cards for payment. I'll finish signing up as soon as you allow credit card payment Screamer.

Users with 4mb lines benfit more from axxess 384 uncapped because they get full line speed after hours. We lowly 384k only plebs would be paying for something that only gives half its value. So 384k uncapped for a 384k line surely makes more sense for us.

just one thing though, the afrihost gigs work on 4mb, 1mb, 384 - no difference, they all cost the same - so remember, you are paying for speed increases there

I love Afrihost as much as the next guy. However remember their 29GB is only a special not their full price. Thus all ISP's will have to start doing something, that is only common sense.
Question is this a contract or can it be cancelled at anytime?

I have an Afrihost account. I mailed the guys in the beginning of this month to cancel. They emailed me i can use the "Control Panel" to this, which i do know and understand. By using this command it terminates the account immediatly..fine..but does it mean im being billed the following month as well. You pay the beginning of the month to use the account......so why give 30 days notice...can someone please shed light on this?

Last I heard, Telkom weren't looking at DSL2 yet simply because VOX are doing line bonding, and Telkom therefore see no reason to increase the line capacity.

Required for all ADSL accounts is the phone line rental from Telkom
Analog Phone line: R131
Total Costs Plus ADSL Line Rental (Uncapped/Unlimited)
R131 + ADSL line rental: R152 + 384kb Uncapped: R399 (ISP) = R682
R131 + ADSL line rental: R326 + 512kb Uncapped: R799 (ISP) = R1256
R131 + ADSL line rental: R413 + 1024kb Uncapped: R1499 (ISP) = R2043
R131 + ADSL line rental: R413 + 4096kb Uncapped: R2499 (ISP) = R3043
Who do I pay what?
The total cost shown is what you will pay in total. You will have to pay the Phone and ADSL line rental to Telkom and the ISP charges to Screamer
How many concurrent connections are supported?
1. This means only one ADSL line can be active with the username/password and any one time. It does not affect how many devices are connected to this line via a router however. You can still connect you Laptop, PC, PSP, Cellphone or whatever to the line via your home's router.
Where does the bandwidth come from?
A mixture of both SAIX and Seacom bandwidth.
Is there local cap?
There is no need for local cap because the blended bandwidth never runs out.
Do I have to pay a full month is I signup halfway?
No, you will pay for the rest of this month on a pro-rata basis with next month paying the full amount.
Is my bandwidth throttled during office hours?
No!
Will I get my full line speed after hours?
No. You will get one speed throughout the month regardless of the time. That speed will be the lowest of either your line speed or the ISP speed you choose.
Is the bandwidth shaped?
No. In the conventional sense...You can game with it but heavy p2p traffic may be shaped...
