Did you really see true broadband in 2009? (http://www.moneyweb.co.za/mw/view/mw/en/page292671?oid=335011&sn=2009 Detail&pid=287226)

Predictions from a year ago revisited; right or just plain wrong?

Telkom will upgrade ADSL line speeds, but will still charge ADSL-only users the analogue line rental.

What would make the year worthwhile, would be to see the fine money from Telkom, given to Eskom, so they can get off our backs as well.
Sc_ew them...

No, but I did see Telkom "Broadband" emphasis on " "

I really don't think you are in a position to be making predictions either, given your last batch! :p

Dude, I am the Rouxenator, mindless self indulgence is but one of my many talents. My prediction for next year remains that wireless prices will not drop and Telkom will make more from ADSL rentals.

I'll take LFX's optimistic mood too:
Telkom will drop their loop next-other year*.
Prices will be reduced* for both wireless and ADSL.
*due to Murphy's laws, exact numbers are not mentioned.

I predict that we will be nowhere near where we should be!

I phoned the cable TV company in Madeira today to activate my internet for a soon to be visit. The lady on the other side asked if I wanted the 30mb per sec line. It costs 34 Euro's all in per month and no CAP rubbish.

Here is a Island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and they offer this. Makes me feel sick how we South African's are being raped. Viva 3rd world country.... VIVA!

My predictions:

ADSL pwns everything else on value for money basis.
Uncapped status quo by year end, though with reasonable use restrictions.
Google & gmail accessible locally. Youtube isn't.
Drastic increases in intl torrent & Newsserver usage.
Vodacom & MTN investigated for collusion. Medium sized fine for both & promises to fix it.
LLU deadline moved back.
WUG groups membership hits plateau.
Axxess & WebAfrica regain all lost customers plus more with excellent offers. New & small ISP can't compete. Telkom matches both on value within months but only starts offering uncapped close to yearend.
IS becomes more important than SAIX.
Major panic at MWeb due to loss of customers and rubbish image. Move into VOIP in direct competition with Telkom achieves nothing. Refocus on corporate customers.
ADSL speeds increased to minimum of 1mbps+ by year-end. 8mbps is implemented but can't be used by most due to antediluvian copper.
TENET increases amount of content mirrored drastically.
JINX and CINX increase in importance.
Seacom investors surprised by lower than expected returns. Triple operational/active capacity on fiber link by year end.

My predictions:

Pretty awesome list AnomalyNexus.

Here's my version.

Here's my version.

New wireless technology starts competing/complementing ADSL. Metro Wi-Fi is rolled out to >1,000,000 people.
Uncapped status quo by year end, though with reasonable use restrictions.
Google & gmail accessible locally including Youtube and the rest of Google and IBM cloud computing.
Drastic increases in local torrent & Newsserver usage.
FIFA sign agreement with providers to deliver decent connectivity in host cities.
Vodacom & MTN investigated for collusion. Medium sized fine for both & promises to fix it.
Cell companies post huge losses. Subscriber base shrinks by >10%
Virgin or Orange buys Cell C.
LLU prices unbundling.
ICASA magically gets some things right.
Telkom punts upgraded NGN network just before/after world cup. Local backhaul improves dramatically but still more expensive than international.
IPTV is closer to being launched locally.
VOD becomes more common.
Big ISP's struggle to compete due to overheads. Smaller ISP's go the Virtual uncapped ISP route to survive.
Telkom deals with other ISP's to deliver better value DSL products.
Number of DSL clients increases by 30%.
IS struggles to keep downstream users.
MWeb goes bang.
TENET increases amount of content mirrored drastically.
JINX and CINX start migration into vendor neutral datacentres.

I did not see true broadband in 2009 (passport stayed in my cupboard:p) but I saw many improvements. If the grape vine is correct (and by "grape vine", I mean Garyvdh), next year is going to be exciting.
