While researching came accross this awesome campaign which dovetails with us nicely....
see http://www.fxi.org.za/accesstoinfo.htm

from the site:

The access to information programme aims to address practical problems in ensuring much greater usage of, the Constitutional right of access to information. This is especially so with respect to the Act that gives effect to the right, namely the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA). Presently, for a variety of reasons the Act risks becoming an elite instrument, with usage being restricted mainly to middle class individuals and a handful of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO's). Much more work needs to be done to ensure the social appropriation of this right.
and later

The programme will also concentrate on access to information held by the private sector, where the private sector is involved in the delivery of basic services, or where the private sector prevents access to a basic socio-economic right.
nice!
how do WE get involved with THEM?

Peapod, if I remember correctly the FXI has already assisted one this forum's members, viz. MaD, in his battle against Telkrap. They sued/threatened to sue because of his Hellkom site. So... he's the most qualified to comment - MaD?

 mbs - 'they' being fxi? So, FXI sued/threatened to sue MaD over Hellkom.co.za??? If so that's not really a Freedom of Expression Institute's Rear End...:(

sheesh, you got out of bed on the wrong side this morning honey! They are FXI and THEY assisted MaD in his battle with Telkom in the Hellkom drama.

FXI supported MaD - their opinion was basically that Telkom is going nowhere with their lawsuit.

I know someone at FXI - he's a lecturer in my department at Wits. I'll go have a word with him on Wednesday. My professor can also put us in contact with the senior ppl at FXI - I often speak to Prof Lodge about my Telkom interests, and he has offered in the past to put me in contact. I'll first see what Na'eem Jeenah (the lecturer) has to say.
