I am happy in my job but I agree that a lot of high level IT people would jump ship in a blink of an eye if offered a competitive job at another company, no loyalty. These days if you stay in one position for more than 3 years people say that you're afraid of change that you're not growing...bull****!!! South Africa needs people that are loyal and are willing to do the same job for a long time, change is not necessarily always good.

im jobless nuff said, but hey i dnt blame them for not being happy, ive seen the nonsense they have to fix , even id be unhapy and annoyed in the workplace
It is not so much to do with the physical work. Whether you are writing a code for company A or writing for company B, it is basically the same....(This is just an example)....and yes some of you might disagree.
Job satisfaction has lots to do with remuneration, working environment and interpersonal skills with higher management and colleagues. Many years ago the building which I worked in was painted all grey...inside and out...I hated every moment of working there and for that stupid reason applied and moved, even though the $$$ was not too bad.

Been in IT for 6 years. The ever growing salary does not always negate the ever growing sense of unhappiness. I go between not being able to believe I get paid to do what I do and not believing that I'm willing to stomach it for another day.
As for the people talking about loyalty: most companies don't have loyalty to their employees. Why should you stick around in the same job for 25 years? Where's the benefit? Many IT companies don't even pay overtime, because overtime has become almost synonymous with working in the industry. At more than one (big name) company that I've worked at you'd get teased for working half day if you leave at 8pm. I agree with people that say you should switch companies every 2 to 3 years. At least until you're in your early to middle 30's. You will expose yourself to various technologies and industries, up your salary much more quickly and therefore be much better positioned for a management position later on. Companies like individuals that show ambition. Staying at one company forever doesn't show any ambition. In fact it shows the opposite.

Agreed. I tell folks this at work as well when they start b*tching about everything but never mention some new benefit or freebie the company gives them. If you think it's better somewhere else, then resign and go there. And don't come back. EVER!

You get folks who hate their jobs but still give 100% and don't moan and groan all day. They get on with what they are being paid to do.

I agree with Imoe here. I worked in a job previously where I absolutely loved what I did, but it reached a point where the remuneration just wasn't cutting it and I had to leave.
I had another job where the remuneration was great but the working environment wasn't and once again I left.
Thankfully, I love my current job (I don't even see it as a job, it's fun) and while I'll most likely have to leave at some point, I don't see that point anywhere in the soon to mid forseeable future.

You need to get exposed to different technologies and systems to get proper experience and growth! It's very difficult to acheive this by working for one company for 15 years.

That is what irks me too.
My current job is ok, but was better a year ago before the new boss...

A senior IT professional is not treated the same as a senior in other positions. We are still just seen as "techies".

Well I am happy, in less than a year with this company I have seen it at it's best with over 40 staff the phones buzzing things going well to a staff compliment of 2 (me being 1 of them :D). Now we are back on our feet, staff compliment is growing once again & I have a say in who comes and who goes. I have moved from being a drone to manager and seeing my salary jump with a whooping 37.5%. Yes I love my job I love what I do and unlike most people I like the people I work with. I have worked for big corporates but will never go back again. Here I have found my niche.

I am happy with my Job , if you not happy then don't work , and be a vagrant
:-)
Im very happy with my job.
I relocated to another town and took my job with me to work from home. My company pays overtime, telkom line, my Vodacom 3G and my cell phone account. Corp pc, labtop and cell phone is also part of the deal.
This is because i tucked my head down for 7 years with my current client and rebuilt their whole infrastructure over this period. Before this is i was a desktop jockey with the same client for 4 years. I know the workings of there business and systems pretty well.
Im extremely loyal to the client, as long as he is happy my employer wont dare touch me, they make way too much money from my skills.

Jumping ship every now and then is good for you. I have seen with myself that companies are always willing to hire me even though I tend to change jobs now and then....people always say that changing jobs often isnt good for you..well I don't agree...change is good as you are most likely to learn more things when you change jobs. Plus salary goes over the roof!:D

I moved to new company 6 months ago... and comparing where I am working now and previously I enjoy my job now and all the challenges I face with the big projects I am working on.
In my previous job there were always certain "people" taking credit for my ideas and work and that kind of got to me after 4-5 years.
But I can say doing my 12H+ a day on projects and loving all of it!

you have to be happy with your job... can't imagine doing something i don't enjoy everyday O_o
holy !@#!@, I can't believe this was me!! O_o I said that???
Same job still, I hate it now more than I liked it then it seems.. I've been for about 5 interviews in that past 2 months, and 2 follow up interviews.. problem is that I have such limited experience in a crappy "specialised" language, even though I know countless languages.
People don't seem to want to pay me what I'm worth because I don't have experience in PHP/Perl which are languages I'm passionate about and jobs I'm seeking. I'm certified in both, yet that doesn't seem to mean anything. Surely having 4 years experience in other languages should mean something?
Looks like I might be changing companies soon though :D But this is also the worst time to change, because it probably means no December holiday ;(
Every person I talk to at my current company used to love their jobs and suddenly hate it, Purely because of management.
