AB has to be keeper to be in the team, I think a few years back he could have said "He wanted to concentrate on his batting" but atm he can't even score runs or keep behind the wickets... So he'll just have to do both okay'ish... Duminy should be given a rest, he isn't performing at all...
How is the weather looking ;) Maybe the rain gods will be on our side for a change...
What about that turkey AB Devilliers???
Yes AB has been underperforming but if we can keep guys like prince and Duminy on then AB is looking like The Don.
AB's last 10 innings: 32; 64; 50; 2; 36; 34; 58; 53; 12; 3. (Average: 34.4)
Funny how he has not really failed. Scoring 2 x 50 in 2 tests is not really failure imo.
Lets look at duminy: 56; 11; 4; 0; 0; 36; 7; 9; 0; 6 (average:12.9)
Ashwell Prince: 45; 0; 2; 16; 0; 15; 19; 0; 1; 23 (Average: 12.1)
Lets look at Dale Steyn: 7; 0; 47; 3; 26; 1*; 1*; 0*; 5; 1 (Average: 13.0)
Tell me again how AB is not good enough please.
Drop Prince, Insert Peterson.
If a white player is out of form people turn a blind eye.........

In Prince's defense, he has been screwed over for Duminy's sake.
And Peterson has only had one game - lets not get carried away.
He'll be worked out soon. (by bowlers, that is)

We may as well just add another 2 bowlers in for them, we would have more of an attack and our batting line up would not be weaker. Get rid of prince and duminy FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Excess baggage.

Mamajyout, I think the cricket team picks on merit and I am also non white.
Read this article about Hashim Amla and what other knowledgeable Indians think about the race situation.
http://www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/447901.html
Cricket from school level does do its part to promote cricket to all races and I think they are doing extremely well. The fact of the matter is AB is going through a slump, but he is not performing as bad as Prince (who I have sympathy with) and Duminy. On this forum they continually bash Harris - who I think deserves his place in the team too - and other bowlers and batsmen of all races.
Please look at the facts and discuss it, rather than arguing on emotion.

This is all in your head.

Great century again from Amla, surely going to be one of the greats of SA batting?
This after he was left out of the side for a long time to work on his technique issues. Its something Duminy should take note of. As for Prince, the man should be given a chance to bat in his chosen position in the middle order, now that his "replacement" is not working out too well, and Peterson has shown himself up the task, and is a specialist top order bat.

What get's me about AB is that he has expressed his desire not to keep cos he wants to be a better batsman .So personal ambition overrides team success? Who the hell does he think he is ?
If he keeps SA have an extra specialist in the team. Why is he allowed to get away with it? the old boy's club conspiracy theory does have merits.

Prince and Duminy may be playing very badly, but AB is overrated and playing on some hyped reputation.
I posted a while back about the technical deficiencies...it always gets found out. Amla has worked on his (mind you he is playing on his favourite sort of pitches), I also posted a while back that Duminy's exploits in Aus may have been one off's of an unseen batter. So Prince had to give way, then out of position etc.
Lets look at the stats: If your top 6 batsmen averaged only 40, then your average score per match after 6 wickets down will be 240 plus the tail, approx 300. That is never enough to win matches.
When the aussies were on top they were all batting at or above 50. Ditto SA during 2008 only.
Anyone that averages under 40 for a length of time has to be carried by the others and after a while need to make way for someone, otherwise by continuing to carry them as passengers when other batsmen are in similar situation then you face the situation they have now with three guys averaging a combined approx 20...then what do you do, because suddenly the bloke averaging 33 doesn't look so bad on his own and you can't afford to bring three new batsmen in at same time.
You need to act quick on the technical deficiencies before the bus is full of passengers
cheers

I prefer to look at a batsman's stats and performance holistically. On that basis both AB and Prince are there on merit and merit alone. 43 and 42 average respectively is more than adequate. Again, it is imperative for the coaches and selectors to persist with them.

I hate these situations where the last wicket gives you a tiny amount of hope holy to have it crushed right at the end.
If anyone thinks I'm being pessimistic that is why.
No me as well but there is hope since the rain helped us and it is all we cling onto now :D. Maybe for once the rain will help us. Geez if he loses his wicket in the last over i will be gutted :(.

Harbhajan Singh to Morkel, no run, 87.2 kph, dropped by Dhoni. Very difficult chance though. It was just outside off stump, straightening, Morne was shaping to leave it and it runs of the bat-face and hits Dhoni's right knee .. gloves were nowhere in the frame. What drama.

Sehwag kicks the ball away to the boundary! slightly short in length and outside off stump and Amla punched it off the back foot and the ball stops just near the boundary. Now the drama begins! Harbhajan Singh: "This was probably a better wicket than Nagpur.. We played fantastic cricket , the way we bowled on the first day and the way we batted. Today we just bowled with three bowlers but have done the job. Eden has been special to me. I don't know what it but I have done well here always. We wanted to be at the top of the table; we know we got the players to keep being No 1. We are very happy and it's fantastic to win the way we did. The heart was pumping in the end! My sister is getting married and so I won't be playing the first two ODI games. I want to wish my team well."
Hang on for quotes from the post-match ceremony
Graeme Smith: "It would have been terrific if we had hung around. England did it couple of times against us but credit must be given to MS an his boys. We should have batted better in the first innings. We then came and dropped a few catches. You have to give credit to all the boys for trying. The pitch (here) was still good. Batting on last day in India was always going to be difficult. Special words to Amla .. he has been outstanding through the series. He is become our glue at no 3. I don't think any of us have seen him play better. He has a calm mind and has been working very hard. Great to see it coming together for me. The last two trios to India ... I can't complain. We have drawn the series.. not every team can say that. Hopefully next time we come out here, we can go one step forward. But next India will be coming to South Africa later this year. They will want to win at our home and we want to do well. I would like to thank the crowd for all the support."

I think its not fair on Prince as they changed him from a middle-order to opener (even in domestic level, he failed as an opener).
He was one of our top batsmen, but opening has taken his confidence away.
Duminy, like Kallis, Amla, Smith... needs to go back to domestic and grow from there. If he is still there the next test match, then it will be obvious what everyone is thinking, and possibly why Majola decided to become a selector.
Prince possibly also needs to go back to domestic to get confidence, but i think with his experience and a tour against a west indies should pick him up.

Duminy was brought in to replace Prince in Aus. When Prince was fit again, he was forced to open to accommodate Duminy. He was therefore effectively forced out of form by being made to open.
Some of you guys seem to have forgotten how good Prince was in the middle order. I'd be inclined to leave Prince in the middle order and bring Peterson in to open. Duminy's still young so he'll make the squad again after regaining form at domestic level.
Duminy performed when he was given a chance because he knew he had to make a big impact to keep his place. Now that he knows he's an automatic choice, he seems to not care anymore.
Anyway I look forward to the test series against India in SA in December. Then we'll see how good the 'best' team really is.

The SA team like to persist with youngsters before they axe them.
Duminy is avergaing 30 now and he will be axed.
Look at Kallis and Amla, when they first came in, they were averaging below 25 before they were sent back to domestic.
But they came back and, well, they both averaging now close to 50.
We still have probably the best batting line-up but a weak tail (look at the ratings and add Prince's predicament).
We do have a small problem in the bowling dept as we rely totally on Steyn who is by far the best.
Our fielding has also become poor (we were the best before) as we drop too many catches.
But even still, on paper, i think we have the best side.
Problem is, we thump sides (beat Aus, Ind and Eng by an inns...) which gives us good stats. But we dont salvage games like these where we need to draw.

No let's not blame SA for kallis's lack of trophies, he is more worried about not going out than scoring fast. Only when he got dropped from the pro 20 squad did he decide he should start smashing the ball. Kallis absolute test legend but i hate seeing him in the odi and pro 20 squad.

Kallis was never dropped. They persisted with him and the same applies to ab. They both went through this phase. Only youngsters they have dropped who came back is amla.
We do not have a weak tail. Sure its not at the levels of the sa side that had the likes of pollock, klusener, hall, boje but compared to most sides this is a very good tail. Everyone is averaging about 12 and other guys like parnell, steyn and morkel should be averaging 20. In fact it compares pretty well to the great australian sides tail.
Ntini is not better than morkel and parnell, this was proven during the english series. There is a reason he got dropped. Parnell and morkel's performance are pretty much the same as what mitch johnson and bret lee achieved last time in india. Hardly disgraced themselves. Also especially morne was the victim of his fielders dropping catches.
On the test the middle order let us down. None of ab,jp or prince contributed in this test. Great effort from hash and the tail but it was too much for them to do. The fact that parnell and hash's partnership is the highest of the innings say it all.

The man had a brilliant series vs england. Its always very very hard for fast bowlers in india. He gets tons of catches dropped as well. None of the bowlers deserve to get dropped. All did their jobs manfully. The batsman with the exception of amla and to some extent pietersen let us down in this match. The attack is fine with steyn, morkel, parnell and harris the batsman just need to give them the runs on the board.

Because the selectors decided to pick a hack like loots bosman ahead of him. That selection panel was sacked. Bosman averaged 17 in the pro 40 but someone got picked because once in 20 innings he happens to score very quickly.

You want someone who struggles to bowl above 130 kph and gets hit around in domestic cricket once the ball stops swining?? Morkel out bowls him by a mile in SA domestic cricket. Tsotsobe just like mcclaren are there as backup because they are the best of an average bunch of domestic bowlers, in truth they aren't test bowlers. ODI yes but not test.
I guess you disagree with a lot of former great cricketers who rate morkel/steyn as the best new ball combo. Also go and ask andrew strauss whether he thinks morkel is below average.

I agree with you. Like I said bosman is a hack who got picked because the selectors someone feels he can repeat 20/20 form in 50 over cricket. He has proven he can't . He shouldn't be there. There is bodi and the likes of vandiar, miller, ingram or rossouw who they could have picked as youngsters to gain some experience instead of taking someone who is very unlikely to have any sort of impact.

The youngsters are not ready for international cricket and there is not enough time to get them ready for the 2011 wc. Gibbs has shown through his form in pro 40 that he deserves his spot. After wc 2011 gibbs will likely retire from international cricket and kallis and boucher from odi and t20, you can then bring in the likes of rossouw, vandiar, ingram and miller. These players who are good enough to play for SA have only emerged in the last year. You do not pick 4 19/22 year old's and hope to win the wc. Steyn,Parnell and Morne Morkel is more than a decent attack. The worry is the spinner, hopefully roeloff rediscovers his form or botha finds a way to bowl his ****ra legally.

I posted my predictions somewhere in the England thread ...
"Going to India now - flat pitches for our 2 batsmen who are having a bad time - yay! , and flat pitches for our newbie bowlers, our toothless spinner.
The good news is that India's bowlers are not that good. The bad news for our bowlers is that India no longer collapse like a ton of bricks. Looking foward to Sehwag and the ball flying to the boundary on the flat pitches ;-) "
Predication : flat pitches for our 2 batsmen who are having a bad time - yay!
Result : flat pitches, average Indian bowlers, Prince and Duminy still suck big time.
Prediction : Sehwag was going to have a nice time with our bowlers and India's flat pitches -
Result : correct, he scored 290 in 3 innings, at a rate of 87%.
Prediction : India no longer Collapse
Result : 50-50 The 2nd test the fought well and avoided the clump of wickets.
Prediction : India's bowlers are not that good
Result : They ain't apart from Zaheer, and Singh is only half good.
Prediction : Our bowlers will be breaking their backs ... "flat pitches for our newbie bowlers, our toothless spinner"
Result : Apart from Dale Steyn, the rest were average and below, the pitches were flat, and our spinner unimpressive.
Prediction : Run rates at 4.0
Result : Close, Kallis and Amla innings brought it down, but the general run rate in India seems to be 4 to the over, except for the team that is struggling for survival
Prediction : 2 draws
Result : Wrong, 2 innings win within 4 day's of play.

He is showing it can be done in the subcontinent where the ball doesn't bounce and seam. He really cashes in on this grounds which helps him to keep up that average. His technique with no foot movement gets exposed where the ball bounces.

Also something to take note of. At bloemfontein he batted number 6, that was his debut game. He made a 100 but that was against the old ball. Bloem also has the rep of being the flattest of our test grounds. When he was last in SA , he averaged 17 for the series. So its going to be very interesting come the end of the year. Anyway, SA has to get 299 to win. Could have been less had they appealed a run out chance off Nehra, who ended up on 16 n.o. From CricInfo:
46.5 Steyn to Nehra, no run, 139.5 kph, some comical running here, Nehra pushes the ball to mid-on, Nehra and Praveen both set out, Nehra decides he can't make it so he holds up his hand asking Praveen to go back, Nehra also scampers back, there's a direct hit at the keeper's end, there was no appeal for a run-out but replays show Nehra's bat was only on the line and not across it
Nehra was on 0 at the time.

Why is amla not playng?
I hope that he is simply being rested.

Nowhere close, and people have put up stats to prove it. But yes AB better start performing

Ah well it was probably unfair to expect our tail enders to get those runs. Premier batsmen failing, that's the problem!!!
