ADSL line rental

I have access to a Telkom line of which I am not the account holder. Telkom won't let me take out the adsl line rental portion on my name which I need to do. So I've got the 384k line from an ISP but it had to come with a data package at an unattractive rate. I would have tried Cybersmart but I want to be allowed to use non-CS data on top of what they offer.

I've finally found Riebens Systems (http://www.riebenshost.co.za/ADSLLine.html) who will give me the line at R142pm. I have access to a concurrent connection which I will supplement with 3Gb from MyISP (http://www.myisp.co.za/)/ at R60

So I'll get 3Gb for R202pm

What is Telkom's wholesale price for ADSL line rental to ISP's. I can't imagine Riebens are making much on R142p.m.?

FYI afaik Webafrica have a pretty good rate for line + 1gb R199. Some people on Cybersmart say they use other ISPs as well without problems.

Cybersmart doesn't have issues with you using other ISP's, BUT if you have any technical problems with the other ISP (connecting, speed issues, etc), then they won't help you out. That's basically what the T's & C's mean.

It's kind of silly that they don't just say that in the T&C's.

Anyway who would get 2 ISPs and expect Axxess to support their Afrihost account?

i might have misunderstood but. if telkom wont give u adsl on the phone line, because u are not the account holder, then nobody else will be able to, webafrica and all of them simply handle telkom on ur behalf, they do not put the actual adsl on the line. once telkom get the app from webafrice, etc. and see u dont own the account they will not let it go on?

My guess is Barge is renting from someone who is paying the Telkom line. Maybe he should get the landlord to pay ADSL (I guess he probably has tried though), if the landlord won't do it, try negotiating with them that you'll pay the ADSL fee.

A long story: Techrat is quite right. I tried self-install through Telkom. They said they need to do a credit check on the account holder. Turns out Telkom had written off about R1200 on another line of one if my landlord's tenants who had skipped after 5 months of no rent in 1996! The line was in the landlords name.

Telkom would not do the adsl line upgrade unless that written off amount on the old account was paid in full. That's why I had to go through another ISP, in my name, to get the line upgrade etc. as Telkom don't do credit-check on the ISP's.

The line upgrade through the ISP was free but had to come with a data package, so I took their smallest one and relied on a shared concurrent connection. Now I'm migrating to Riebens Systems to get line rental only.

Cybersmart have good packages but I'm not keen to get value for money by downloading in "night rider" time. I'd rather pay my R142pm for the line, with the option of a prepaid Axxess or Afrihost GB that doesn't expire. I'd take the MyISP 3GB for R60 (R20/GB) should I need a data subscription.

Wholesale price on bulk accounts incl VAT is R134-00. Telkom now offer the line + 1Gig @ R158-00 on contract, that's the catch.
