Ok , I know this is old technology , but is download speed of 10KB/s normal for 128K ISDN line? Shouldn't I at least be getting 20KB/s? When I use SoulSeek , it sometimes drops to as little as A trickling 4KB/s .I called my ISP , Tiscali and they told me to log a complaint with Telkom , which i have done and still waiting for the technicians to come and test my line. What do you guys say?
If I'm to go the broadband route , what do you recommend?Preferably wireless though.
I still use ISDN. Would love to have switched to the faster ADSL, but it would imply that I spend about double.
Regarding 128kbs, I used to get about 11,4k on average (when Tiscali was still Tiscali). It might be just my imagination, but I have not found a stable throughput since Tiscali is now MWEB. (My theory is that they are sharing the wonderful bandwidth we had with Tiscali with the overloaded MWEB crowd.)
I stick to 64kbs as a steady 7,4K is a lot better than a jerky 4-11K(seems to "burst" with 128K).
I do a good 8-12GB of data per month. Yes, the response is horrible!

Hi ej, I have isdn128 & use Imaginet. My d/l averages 14k, pretty consistant, http, ftp, P2P, its pretty good. Give up that "service" provider, you're not getting what you've paid for.

Go for wireless. For the same amount of money you have 24/7 connection.

I noticed the same thing with my 56k account. I canceled and went with Discovery for a ISP. Don't laugh it works great. I get the same constant connection and apeed as I did with the old Icon/WorldOnline/Tiscali account. Tiscali definately went down the drain when MWeb took over, which is the exact reason I never suggested them (MWeb) to clients. Now I have a stable connection, which does not disconnect during a weekend, and good line speed (for 56k) @ R29.00/month (ok you have to be a Vitality member, or know one). :D

I've also noticed a speed decrease since the MWEB buyout... I'm also on ISDN128k, and before i became an unwilling MWEB subscriber i could sit at 15.4k solid for a whole weekendit never went below 15.8k when i downloaded Fedora Core 1 a long while ago..My access now seems "fluttered" at around the 10k mark:mad: and p2p seems shaped.... Planing on upgrading to ADSL soon tho... I've been with them(tiscali) since the first days of ICON, when it was still owned by IS, then vodacom, then world online, then tiscali and now mweb... and i think if i get ADSL i'll be jumping ship to axxess or AYCE

I had 128k before subscribing to adsl and lets not get confused here. Having Isdn 128k has the following advantages 1) Its cheaper (not by much)
2)You can dl anything(Not true)
3)Online gaming better(depends)
4)At the mo change to Telscum
the best available now.

I got a comfortable 16kB/s when I was on ISDN. Bursts up to 20 during the "Quiet" hours.
Ofcourse the constant disconnections eventually got the better of me and I cancelled.
It's usefull to see others experienced the same impact of the MWEB black-box(or is that black hole?). Let me just stop there, no need to vent my frustration. All I can say is - I miss the good old Icon/Worldonline/Tiscali days - never had a problem (ok, once).
Brooko, I also joined in the good old ICON days and so on.
Its probably time to move on. At some stage getting 1/2 the value I pay for (excluding the already ripped-off charges from our famous monopoly) gets the message across.
I will be away for a bit more than 2 weeks. Not sure how much time I will get in the US to connect, but I will take my laptop with.
The first thing I will do when I get back is to get ADSL - axxess or ayce. With good old gmail now having pop3 facilities, I no longer have the hassels of having to change my ISP e-mail addy with people.
Thanks for having a seperate dialup section! Here I have people speaking the same "language" with the same limited frustrations. Great idea.

Actually with the new "price drops" 192 ADSL with a 10 gig Axxess account probably works out close to 128k ISDN + ISP + InfinitCall + Calls (if you connect every day + weekends). Looking into switching myself, just a bit apprehensive not knowing what Telkom have planned with their new capping system. I don't mind them capping local as long as they give a decent amount of usage.

I recently upgraded from ISDN mainly because my line kept disappearing and i'd be without a connection for a about 3 days at a time and the fact that ADSL compared favourably pricewise
ISDN2a line rental - R200'ish
InfinitCall - R47'ish
Internet Phonecalls (128kb) = (((R14 * 4 week days) + R14) * 4) = R280 which excluded the usual disconnects, sometimes 3 per night
TOTAL = a minimum of R527 per month, usually closer to the R700 range and up to R900.
DSL192 + Imaginet 10gig = R708 (to be R619 from 1 august 2005)
For me the ADSL is much nicer, and the speed is better too...20kb/s with DSL compared to a max of 16kb/s if I was lucky
