So I got my brother's old iphone today (3G 8GB) and was playing with it and think I messed up.
I installed itunes and tried syncing the applications, however all it did was deleted all my brother's applications off the phone.
Then I downloaded blackrain, ran it and it got stuck. Now the phone is stuck on a picture of a usb cable and the itunes logo and nothing I do makes it go away or restart. The phone is not recognised by my computer anymore. What did I do???

Okay ignore this, I did a soft reset. Bit confused with the phone right now...will continue playing around with it.

Okay so I follow the instructions exactly using blackrain, however I never see the picture of the guys face.
But nevermind that, I still get the message that everything is fine and the phone will reboot...but then it doesn't. It goes onto a black screen and nothing happens. Then after 20minutes it switches off, I switch it on again and no jailbreak.
Gonna call it a night now, will try again tomorrow.
Edit : Probably because I am on 3.1.3. Will give sn0wbreeze a try - download link dead atm.

The Window jailbreaks are not always fullproof try using the MAC jailbreak downloads on a MAC I get the best resuts with them

Yeah so i was slightly overexcited over the weekend. Still not jailbroken though, will try again this week sometime. I think there was a mistake on the snowbreezeinstructions i used. If only i didn't upgrade to 3.1.3 immediately without reading anything.

Apparently redsnow works for the 3G though..
Thanks to daring experimenters in the comments, we can confirm that yesterday’s redsn0w works for today’s 3.1.3 update for iPhone 2G. Just point it at the 3.1.2 iPhone 2G IPSW after doing update or restore to 3.1.3.
...
Can confirm that this method works for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 1G too. Don’t do it for iPhone 3G if you need an unlock though (really, don’t!).

I followed these instructions :
http://www.redmondpie.com/sn0wbreeze-3.1.3-jailbreak-iphone-3g-3gs-3.1.3/
But when I restored to the custom .ispw I got an error message. Could restore to the original apple .ispw though. Will give it another shot.
Question : If I do a "Erase All Content and Settings" on the iphone itself, will the firmware return to the one it came out of the factory?

Use redsnow link above rather than snowbreeze.
