Hi All
I ordered a 512kbps line from Telkom, I did an ADSL self install and I can connect to the net and even play Battlefield 1943 on my PS3 :D (PS3 connected wirelessly to the wireless ADSL modem/router - a SMC modem/router).
Thing is, when I check on my router I see the following:
Under Data Rate:
Down Stream: 384 Kbps
Up Stream: 127 Kbps
The attenuation and SNR:
Noise Margin (Up): 11dB, (Down): 24dB
Attenuation: (Up): 31dB, (Down): 49dB
I have called 0800 375 375 and told them I seem to have a 384Kbps line, but they say on their system it shows up as a 512.
Is Telkom spinning me a story here or is my line of a bad quality that my router can not sync at 512? That would be a disaster, as I would like to possibly upgrade to 4MB as it is just a bad slow at the moment.
I have also powered down and up my router a number of times over the weekend - should I maybe try and reset it rather? With the hardware reset option on the router itself? Will it make any difference? I will try tonight in any case.
Any help from the ADSL gurus around here will be much appreciated - thanks guys!!!

If it couldn't sync at 512/256, it would probably sync at 384/256.... your upstream is rarely the issue.....

Ask DSL DSL to reset the port for you.

balrog, don't take *** what peons tell you, phone tech support, tell them your ADSL line should be 512k but it syncs at 384k, if they bull**** you into saying "but it's 512k on our side" you tell them "listen here boytjie, I'm telling you now my ADSL router is syncing at 384k, clearly you can see I should be a 512k user, I'm not, so someone ****ed up somewhere and I'm paying for something I'm not getting, so either fix this, or give me your supervisor because I would then like to complain about someone that's insinuating that the customer is WRONG"

Thanks for the help guys - will be doing a few morw things and then take a hard line as per AcidRaZor's suggestion :D

If you paying up for 512k, you should definitely pay up for 4Mb rather. 512k is not good value for money.

totally agree!
4mb/s is worth it and only R83 more!

Yeah, u right - gonna upgrade to 4mb today and see how that goes. Hopefully the line will sync at that speed, holding thumbs!

Hi Ponder - are those stats of my line bad?
Was thinking to climb into my roof and check the state of the incoming Telkom wire ... a new place I move into (new for me, but the place is probably about 6-10 years old).
Any hints on increasing the SNR and decreasing the Attenuation?
Will I need any pots filters if I will ONLY be using the line for ADSL and no voice calling?

Those are "normal" to "bad" sync I think, the higher the noise margin (33+) the better, and the lower your attenuation (<12) the better

Ha! Well, this is a tad weird.
I played around last night - I have a Telkom line in the kitchen and the study. When I initially tested my router to see if it would sync to the exchange, I tested the study and it never synce'd, the light just kept on blinking. In the kitchen, it could sync, so I left it in the kitchen.
Yesterday, when I checked the Client services website(I signed up for the Afrihost 3GB/month account) - the telephone number they show I am calling from, is NOT the telephone number Telkom gave me!!!
SOOOOOooo, move the router over to the study, it sync'ed at 512Kps! well, well, that's not all, my stats now look better as well!:
Now I get (DOWN):
Noise Margin: 36dB (PREVIOUSLY 24dB)
Attenuation: 37dB (PREVIOUSLY 49dB)
(UP):
Noise Margin: 12dB (PREVIOUSLY 11dB)
Attenuation: 19dB (PREVIOUSLY 31dB)
So it seems I have 2 Telkom lines in the house - will have to get Telkom to cancel one and not charge me double!
And still need to upgrade to 4MB, cause apparently the order for my 512k is not yet completed - sheesh!

Are you being billed for two lines?
If you do indeed have two lines I would get Telkom to run a LTS test on those lines to tell you which one has better quality and then keep that one.

Or wait for your first bill - if you are only charged for 1 line - then cancel that one and enjoy the free ADSL rental on the other one :)

Plug a normal handset into each line. Then dial 101999. It will tell you the number for each line. Then you can confirm that you have one or two lines. Could just be two plugs on one line.
