"A couple weeks ago, Intel CEO, Graig Barrett made a bizarre WiMAX claim during a Reuters interview. In a call with reporters, Barrett suggested that fixed broadband was not fast enough, describing most DSL and cable connections in the home as “half-ass broadband” which is no good for video streaming or other applications. WiMAX, he claimed, should be capable of 50Mbps to 100Mbps, and is therefore "significantly better than what we typically look at with DSL and cable." Assuming that Reuters has reported Barrett’s comments correctly, the insinuation that WiMAX will be able to achieve in excess of 50Mbps
speeds on a per user level shows that the WiMAX bandwagon has shifted up a gear,from hype into hysteria. The reality is that WiMAX operators will not be offering per user connectivity anywhere near this level. In fact, it is DSL which can achieve 50Mbps connection speeds and, with the ratification of the VDSL2 standard by the ITU last month, 100Mbps per user bandwidth will soon be a reality."
