Kick-off Celebration Concert has been announced -- but anyone wanting to be part of this historic event is going to have to dig deep in their pockets to buy a ticket.

The line-up boasts local, African and international stars, including Alicia Keys, Amadou and Mariam, Angelique Kidjo, the Black Eyed Peas, BLK JKS, John Legend, Juanes, Shakira, the Parlotones, Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Touré and Vusi Mahlasela.

Tickets for the concert, which takes place at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on June 10, the night before the official opening of the World Cup, will range from R450 (outer circle) to R1 400 for the best seats in the house. And despite the concert being billed as "the greatest entertainment event to date in Africa", many may find the price tag a bit steep.

Local fans will also have to compete for the limited number of tickets with international visitors, who can buy tickets for the concert wherever they are in the world, at local prices.

Those who do manage to get their hands on a ticket, however, should be in for a music spectacular that will also include appearances by football legends past present, as well as celebrities from other fields, all of whom will be working together to create a celebratory atmosphere that will last for the duration of the tournament.

The event should be an audio-visual feast, with Emmy Award-winning producer Kevin Wall and his company, Control Room, producing the concert. Control Room has masterminded some of the world's biggest and most complex events, such as Live Earth 2007, which featured 150 artists performing on seven continents over the course of 24 hours to raise awareness of climate change.

Is this really the best we can come up with for a concert ?

I have ' heard ' of 7 of those names and know 3 of them well. Parlotones are dismally average with nothing new to offer, BEP...well .. nice for some but repetitive, Amadou and Mariam who ?

Where are the names from the 46667 concerts - the Corrs, Brian May, Juluka, Annie Lennox, - Ladysmith Black Mambazo etc etc.

Not a concert I would pay 50 bucks for.

Well i am not really sure this is news worthy and i think everyone has a different opinion on what a good concert should be.

Parlotones while you think are average have a massive following and could arguably be the biggest band in SA at the moment.

A minimum of R450 for a concert, in Soweto - I'd love to see how that turns out.

Well there's no accounting for taste in a country where Steve Hofmeyr and Patricia Lewis draw in crowds.

AT least they use it for a good cause.

A host of South African celebrities have come together to launch a cover version of the 1980's hit song 'Shout' to kickstart a campaign against crime.

The SHOUT campaign works in association with Primedia's Crime Line, and is the vision of artists Danny K and Kabelo to raise money and encourage South Africans to get involved in the fight against crime.

:mad::mad:

Anyway, Parlotones aside, that is a rotten lineup.

I still think Cokefest '08 had the best lineup this country has ever seen.

Will anyone remember the Parlotones in a year ?

I see Mango Groove are reforming - at least they would add some excitement to a concert of this magnitude.

Of course people will. They are probably the best local band at the moment (imho).

The Parlotones were the first (and only?) local act to ever headline at the Coka Cola dome. I went and it was an awesome concert.

The Parlotones are for people who listen to Highveld and Jacaranda.

That is more a sad indictment on the quality of SA bands than a yardstick of any creative talent.

There isn't a single SA ' commercial ' band that I would even watch on TV let alone pay money to watch live.

I paid R750 for Eddie Izzard and R450 for Top gear recently, and was quite happy to go to them.

I'm sure people won't mind forkin out moolah to go to something like this.
