OK I read the billing agaiun - it looks like MWEB has made an error on my account:
3.3 Billing
3.3.1 You will pay the Service Fee, to MWEB monthly in advance by way of debit order, or such other manner as agreed, on or before the 1st day of each and every calendar month.
3.3.2 Billing will commence on the Activation Date.
3.3.3 If you signed up or switched over to this product by or before the 15th of the month, your first bill will include the full subscription for that month plus the subscription for the following month.
3.3.4 If you signed up after the 15th of the month, your first bill will include half the subscription for the first month and the full subscription for the following month.
I should only be billed for R540 + R270 approx
Please see that this is sorted out, as it seems that I have been billed up until MAY when it should be APRIL.
MWEB, please sort this out for me, my email is johnjm@mweb.co.za - im not using this so PM me once sorted out.
See here:
30/03/10 MWEB Uncapped 4096 kbps 30/03/10 31/05/10 R 1182.02 R 165.48 R 1347.50 R 1347.50

yup - dopnt know why though - I signed up today like an idiot - first invoice is R1347!! Oh well.
Thats definitely not right. They should bill you for the month of April only, not April and May.
3.3.3 If you signed up or switched over to this product by or before the 15th of the month, your first bill will include the full subscription for that month plus the subscription for the following month.
That just doesnt make sense. From the above if you sign up on the 1st then you pay for the full month and the following month!
Mweb - can you pls clarify.

I'm in CT on 4Mbps capped, and I have exactly the same problems. I am one of those existing subscribers who have been migrated to the new MWeb backbone. I think you wish you could go back to the SAIX backbone!
As I posted elsewhere, tracert shows congestion on the CT/Jhb route. All CT Mweb traffic goes via Jhb first, before it can get anywhere further (even to sites based in CT itself).
Gordon, are you still on capped or have you been migrated?

Gordon, are you still on capped or have you been migrated?
I haven't done anything, and I'm still on 4Mbps capped. A chunk of existing MWeb users were migrated to the new MWeb backbone (was previously on SAIX), while still staying on the same packages.
That is why I am commenting on this thread, not because I am uncapped, but because I am sharing the same service (or lack thereof), and I was migrated without my knowledge (or consent).
For my price/usage combination I actually don't want to be be upgraded (yet).

OK Gordon, thanks for that. I moved to uncapped to allow my kids greater access to the stuff they wanted, but given the speed degradation I'm thinking of going back to capped for myself as it suits me just fine, the speed is what i appreciated and it seems that has gone for a ball of chalk. Regards

If you go back to MWeb capped, it is highly unlikely that your speed will magically reappear. This would only happen if you were 'unmigrated' by MWeb (back to SAIX), which seems rather hard to arrange AFAIK.
We will ALL have to wait and see if the promised capacity makes a difference...

Uncapped 384 and 4096 accounts
We have launched our dedicated 384 and 4096 uncapped accounts. This service runs on the same IS backbone as our other uncapped accounts (You'll find under the *Express list). This account is a 24 hour shaped service which means it will be perfect for normal internet activities in an office environment like web browsing and email. This account is not for heavy downloaders, P2P and news downloads and other similiar services will be heavily shaped.

Any capped MWEB accounts still running on SAIX backbone?
Good question.
Ha-ha! If users are getting good service, they probably wouldn't be lurking (or grouching) on this forum (LOL ;-)
My understanding is that MWeb migrated some existing subscribers, but the new backbone couln't cope with the demand, so they paused the migration process until more capacity comes online. Sounds a bit like like trial-and-error...
This thread is so long it takes a while to find an existing post from the MWeb representative (what happened to the FAQ?)
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?221747-MWEB-Uncapped-ADSL-Official-Q-amp-A&p=3732541&viewfull=1#post3732541
The non-priority bandwidth crunch is a result of a mismatch between additional capacity being bought online and the migration of the existing user base together with the unprecedented demand for new signups. Migrations/sales have got a bit ahead of new capacity deployment necessitating that we squeeze the non-priority traffic to maintain reasonable performance for the service as a whole.

Hi guys,
I'm sure most people here are aware of this, but just in case some aren't ... remember that the download speed you get on a file, for example, is also dependent on the UPLOAD capacity at the other end. Sounds obvious, but it's easy to forget.
I was downloading a game patch (yes, an *ACTUAL* game patch -- 250MB) from an FTP server outside the country. The maximum speed on the download was 8K/s.
I paused the download and tried it again from a different location separate from MWeb ... and it went to a maximum of 8K/s.
Of course I'm not saying that this explain every single "slow" download, I'm just putting it out there for those who may not have realized it.

I don't see what the problem is, they have the more expensive option for heavy users. Personally I would prefer them to upfront about it, than change to something that's unsuitable for me.
I'm just relieved they didn't replace one with the other.

I think they tricked the users, what they calling it 4mb option when ppl cant even download an http file. Im glad i signed up with mweb and not axxess,
We are reseller of axxess and provide adsl to about 10 companies, since axxess released uncapped our capped accounts are so slow.

MWeb uncap SUCKs badly and i have waisted a good 500R. Its so unstable that al my connections (VPN, IM's, Outlook) lose connectivity 3-4 times a day. Even after i have connected MWeb they still didnt resolve this problem.
I get 20kb/s P2P download during the day and about 100kb/s spiking after office hours. USENET servers dont. They use the argument that they shape P2P download to prevent Ilegal downloads. OMW... WoW and LoL (games) uses it to update. Anime and Linux (ISO and Apps) are totaly legal and uses P2P downloads. And afrihost uses the same argument.
you cant play games without lag. during the day or after office hours. (warcarft 3 its local, and battelfield)
So if you enjoy a game during the day or just play WoW or LoL or uses P2P downloads for anime and Linux stuff. Or just want a stable connection that doest drops 3-4 times a day. THIS AINT FOR YOU

**Notice from MWEB** Last night we switched part of our infrastructure over to a next generation fibre optic network. This will allow us to increase our capacities. We'll also see big improvements in speeds, especially for those who are on the shaped package. - FTW on FB (http://www.facebook.com/FreeTheWebSA)
Seems to me like this product is going from strength to strength! No abuse emails yet, normal browsing fantastic, P2P acceptable (cause we knew upfront it would be shaped) and now hopefully latencies will improve?!

My MWEB uncapped so far has been awesome, Perfectly acceptable speeds during the day, browsing is excellent, youtube is excellent . News servers go extremely well after hours (Albeit erratic times for after hours) and I'm sure everything will improve as time passes and people have less to download (proven).

Any capped MWEB accounts still running on SAIX backbone?Hi TonyA,
Not many, we have already migrated 75% of our existing customers to the MWEB network and will eventually no longer have any packages on the SAIX network.
We are definately determined to ensure the MWEB network matches or exceeds the best performance experience avaliable, specifically for priority (popular/relevant) traffic, with non-priority traffic providing reasonable performance improving during off-peak periods (excess network capacity).
This mornings capacity upgrades should go a long to fullfilling this and should eliminate the sporadic bouts of high latency recently experienced.
MWB.
I got to admint I am also happy with my mweb uncapped account, but only time will tell if it remains this way.

Where can we see what traffic is seen as Relevant / Popular? or is this not availble to the public , because with no downloads running , only browsing takes ages and times out a lot.

International traffic is still subject to capacity constraints, and will always be tightly shaped. This is the 'dirty secret' of the whole uncapped story IMO. There is no ISP than can provide unlimited international bandwidth at R219pm (384Kbps).
The scenario seems to be that the previous 10GB 'free' local bandwidth (after using up 'blended' bandwidth), is now being provided as an 'unlimited' service, while the existing international bandwidth is being 'spread' across the month by such tight shaping, that it will only add up to a few GB per month (limited by the contention ratio, etc).
Whether this 'package' works better for an individual user remains to be seen. It certainly depends on whether you sit at your computer for 24/7, or just occasional usage. As an existing MWeb 4Mbps capped user I am not getting any benefit right now (in fact the opposite).

As at 14:11 on 31 March 2010:
--- games.saix.net ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 received, 0% packet loss, time 9026ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 27.412/33.819/43.505/4.393 ms
Average = 33.8ms on 384kbps uncapped shaped. I'm not much of an online gamer so I don't know if this is good enough or not, but it's not in the hundreds.
Where can we see what traffic is seen as Relevant / Popular? or is this not availble to the publicHi Auntpol,
We'd rather not state the actual protocols as they will change over time, however for the most part activities related to browsing & messaging/mail compromise the priority traffic class.
because with no downloads running , only browsing takes ages and times out a lot. Please can you provide some specific sites that I can check out? ... besides MyBroadband.co.za which seems to be taking serious strain today.

Hi
New to the forums, would just like to start of with saying that been with MWeb for a week now and it has been a blast. Had little ups and downs but overall awesome experience. Great job guys and keep it up! ;)
I was just wondering about something, I've signed up for the 512kb package and still haven't received the line upgrade. Did I miss something? Will the line upgrades only happen from the 1st of April? Or does it just take a while before migration takes place from Telkom to Mweb?
Thanks :)

MWeb idea of pro-rata is 50% of the monthly fee if you join after the 15th of the month. Something they should make very clear on their signup page. There should also be an explicit option to join as of the 1st of the following month.

We've done a bit of investigating and it looks like our MetroE fibres into SAIX are running clean and error free. The sporadic jumps in latency & occasional bouts of packet loss (e.g. games.saix.net) seem to be eminating from within SAIX's network. Will see if we can escalated to them.

How are you downloading? MWEB has stated (numerous times) that this is a shaped service, and that "unpopular" protocols will only be at full speed when capacity at that time allows it. The time is not concrete and never will be.
Hi Grouch, TonyA, Auntpol, pjoub06,
We can find no reason in our network why your (assume 4096) services would perform worse than any of the others who are performing satisfactorily. The assumption would be there is something amiss with your local setup or there is an issue in your exchange/regional area. I suggest ...
1. Make sure you have no proxy servers configured in any of the browsers you use
2. I know it sounds corny, but try turing off your router for ~3 min and then power it on again. This will have the effect of re-establishing your session on all levels (auth, IP alloc, bw mgmt etc.)
3. Next please contact our technical call centre on 0860 11 22 52 so that they may assist you with some basic troubleshoot e.g. check line performance etc.
4. If the problem still persists, we would need to enquire with Telkom if there are any issues on the ADSL access network in your exchange area/region

Surely this is not necessarily exclusively MWeb's "fault"? There could be any number of reasons why the download is not at "max" speed. The Telkom "last mile" of cable, the Telkom exchange, congestion anywhere between you and the source, shaping your side, shaping at the source, server load at the source, dirty ADSL cable, weather?
My understanding is that ADSL is a "best effort" service -- if you do somehow always manage to get 400kb/s 24/7/365, consider yourself exceptionally lucky. Considering all the technicalities involved from source to target, I'm often amazed that it works at all ;)

mweb is tier-1. hence why i have thrown my money at them. they knew what they were doing. Or at least they have a better idea of what they are doing as opposed to the ISPs that have reacted to the news that has rocked the internet world in SA.

Dude just because you are downloading a torrent does not mean you will always get max speed. Torrents are dependent on others giving you the speed and it may have happened that not many seeders were giving you the requires bandwidth.
I think judging speeds by torrents is not always the best idea's. Load up some nzb's rather with something like astraweb to get spot on results.

Hi MDE,
It is dependant on network load. The situation will improve in a day or two as additional capacity is bought online, however this does not mean one is guaranteed line speed all the time. You should achieve best performance in the late evening/early mornings when (priority traffic) load is at its least.

To MWEB
I'm an existing MWeb customer who gets 5GB at 512k for R299 per month.
Since it would not cost more money to upgrade to 512k uncapped (R299), I received an email on 18 March saying that I would be upgraded automatically. I was under the impression that the upgrade would take effect from today (1st of the month) but my ADSL Usage page shows that I have 5GB for this month once again. I know of people who were automatically upgraded when the service went live.
Is it possible to find out when exactly I will be upgraded and is it possible to speed up this process as I don't think it would be fair to pay R299 for 5GB this month when uncapped is the same price. I noticed that the only capped options now are 1, 2 and 3GB anyway.
Thank you for this industry shaking service and hope to hear from you soon,
bbabraham

Hi MWEB Magician,
Thanks for the reply, the issue was just down to a lack of seeders on the update for FFXI - so not a network issue.
If i may raise another point -
1) I understand that an uncapped account is not designed for gaming.
2) If this account is the only option that financially kills two birds with one stone (uncapped + decent speed), then is there a chance that the shaping could be less vigilant from 6pm in the evening? I don't start gaming at 11pm as i doubt many others do.
Note that i know that this package is not the ideal solution for low-latency gaming, and i am willing to sacrifice my low pings for the freedom to update my games without having to worry about bandwidth; but if there was some kind of package that unshaped the gaming ports (if that exists), this would probably benefit a vast majority of the "new users" you have picked up in the last week and a bit.
Nice service so far, only a few issues with the line dropping, pinging out of games etc, but a most helpful support desk.
Thanks

MWEB are investigating the feasibility of providing gaming focused/prioritised (uncapped) offerings in the future, however for now the current uncapped products do not specifically prioritise/guarantee low latency for gaming.
We do believe however during off-peak periods (moderate network load) they should provide a reasonable gaming experience.

The reason i ask, and i fully understand your post - is that if the "pipes are opened" at 11pm (your Off-Peak), i dont know many people that start gaming at 11pm - work and all. I was suggesting a little more priority for gaming from 6pm, but understand if this it not possible.

Don't be dumb yourself. Provide proof that all the ISPs mentioned, perform poorly for all the online games.
Use the MyConnectionPC program, running constant tests on each ISP for at least 1 month.
I would love to see the results.
The Answer is in there oh grand one just look.
I was using my telkom account from 12 last night and had the same problems at around that time, whilst trying to game.
Please confirm MWEB, the timeline expected for more gaming related uncapped packages.
My ping to Lindenlabs' Secondlife servers San Francisco, with DigiChilli, was always around 400-500, just as with telkom. Anything better than that will make me smile.

This does sound rather strange.
I would suggest you turn off you router for a few min (3min) to allow your existing session to time out, then reconnect again. A new session profile will be created helping us to determine if this is in any way related to our network.

Thank you for this industry shaking service and hope to hear from you soon,
bbabraham

Mweb really have a retarded billing system. Because their "pro-rata" is in fact not pro-rata there are only two worthwhile days to sign up for their service. They first of the month and mid month. So in effect they screw over their sales department and customers. (I heard Im getting charged half month for less than 12 hours of service because I signed up the 31st of last month.)

MWeb idea of pro-rata is 50% of the monthly fee if you join after the 15th of the month. Something they should make very clear on their signup page. There should also be an explicit option to join as of the 1st of the following month.

yep international seems dead slow, what happened to the supposed redundancy.
Its not shaping, its intermittent problems on the MWeb network (not sure if local or international). There also seem to be long (10 min) delays in switching traffic from SAT-3 to SEACOM (and vice-versa).
Theoretically this switching process should be instantaneous, if the alternate routes were available at IP level. It seems that switching is not very fast (which makes it feel like somone is turning the lights on and off).
MWeb is the first ISP (AFAIK) that is trying to do this dynamic load balancing across 2 different fibres, and this process presumably has teething problems...

If I subscribe to MWEB uncapped data only (I have 384K line), will I be able to use another ISP account on the line or is the line only going to sync with MWEB servers?Hi Smiley_lauf,
Yes no problem, if your router/setup allows for multiple ADSL sessions (logins) you will be able to use the MWEB account together with others (obviously you need to manage which routes go down which session). The one area you're going to need to watch is DNS resolution e.g. if MWEB's DNS servers are not the 1st choice for resolution you may get some incorrect lookups.
Ans say I move house, and have new telphone number and ADSl line, will I be able to use the MWEB uncapped account on the new account? or even move over to the uncapped all inclusive account in my new home?Again no problem, your MWEB account is not tied to any particular ADSL line, however it will only allow 1 concurrent login, so only from one location at a time.

It sounds like you're only using one account at a time so all should be fine (assuming your PC(s) are using your router as their DNS forwarder (server)). By default your router should be automatically learning its DNS servers from the login session, where you can go to look at this depends on the make/model, check the user guide.

Hi Mweb, why are we not runnig at full speed today? Surely the network is not taking stain due to public holiday? are the corporates not "on leave" today?Hi absk300,
Our network is reasonable busy today, but by no means under strain. You should be able to get best performance however we never guarantee line speeds (though some are achieving it or pretty close).
Also there are many other factors beyond our control that may influence speed to a particular site ...
- Local setup/environment - router/switch cfg, cabling, PC drivers etc.
- ADSL access path - copper quality, local exchange uplink, regional concentrator (ESR) load, inter-region transit
- On the other end, the great Internet beyond our network - intermediate path/provider/server congestion or failures etc.

I understand that. It just felt like we were getting normal "peak hour" speed. i am not complaining. I think you guys are great. just though that today we should have run close to full speed whole day, if not full speed whole day. For the bulk of the day, we (well atleast i) was getting normal peak hour speeds, wich in itself is great, but not what i expected. all n all i still think you guys have the best package out at the moment and are also performing the best. Coming from Axxess Express + myself, I can vouch that my new Mweb connection is miles ahead of the competition at this point in time . . . . much better !

Open up your router settings, and find it in the status page. Upstream and downstream or something like that.
Hi All,
We've been informed the faulty power component causing the temporary dipout on Seacom over the last two evenings has been replaced in Mumbai. We hope this will put an end to these incidents.

Or just phone 0800 375 375 and ask the technician to test your line to see what it syncs at.

512kbs account and going fullspeed. Throttling during the work day is inconvenient but not a dealbreaker. Happy customer... now to upgrade to unshaped or not.....hmmm

International is crawling on my Mweb uncapped account (I'm in Centurion), anyone else experiencing this at the moment? I tested a few torrents over the last few days as well. They were flying on Thursday but slowed to a crawl from yesterday morning onwards. Not a big deal though, didn't get the account for P2P but http and streaming is now pretty mush unusable as well.
