Hey

So the speakers on my citi golf are bothering me. They crackle and everything, but thats how I got it when I bought the car (second hand).

Anyways... I want to change the speakers and everything in the car, and I have a couple questions.

First off: My budget is about R1800, and I dont want huge bass pumping sound, just something decent that doesnt crackle all the time. I dont plan on putting a sub or anything in.

So for R1800, I can get a new deck (with aux in and usb, which I need for my ipod) as well as 5.25" or 6.5" rated at 120W 2 way / 250W 4 way respectively which I plan to put in front, and then also either 200W 3 way or 400W 4 way 6"x9" speakers which I will put in the back.

So firstly, is LG a decent brand in terms of car audio? Its the only one that i can get everything for with my budget.

Secondly, I have to choose, do I put the 5.25" speakers in front, and then the 400W 4 way speakers at the back. Or the more powerful 6.5" 4 ways at the front, and the less powerful 6x9 200W 3 ways at the back? I can only afford one of the options at the moment.

Third question, the current speakers in front are 6" (I measured). Obviously its fine to go bigger, but will it look ok if I go slightly smaller with the 5.25" speakers? Or will there be a gap or something? Because that could affect my choice.

And last but not least, how much do you think I can get for a sony xr-5100 (something like that, Ill have to check) and 10cd loader? Because thats what is currently in, but Ill be taking it out. Its probably about 5 years old, but in perfectly working condition (I have tested all the cd slots). I hardly use cds, so its of no use to me anyway, thats why I want the usb connection for my ipod.

Thanks :)

First of all, LG is not a decent brand when it comes to car audio. Shop around and you will get either a Pioneer / Kenwood / Sony / JVC head unit for between R700 and R900.

Secondly, the average output by head units are between 45W to 50W. This means that each speaker cannot be more than 300W as this will cause damage to the head unit. So any speakers above 300W would require an amp.

As for the speaker installations, install the 6.5" in front but first make sure that it will fit (you might have to buy some spacers). Install the 6x9 speakers in the back but choose something that is not more than 300W.

After installing everything, put on some decent dance music (or something else with a beat) and turn the volume up until you can hear distortion (normally between 30 and 40). Do the fine tuning on the head unit settings to clear or minimize the distortion and you will have decent sound when cruising around.

Let me know how the installation went.

Thanks,

Well... I have changed my plans a little after some reading following what you said...

So this is my plan, I have bought everything, I just need to have it installed.

For the deck, I have an LG LAC-5900RN, which has the usb and aux cable inputs (itrip days are over now :) ). Just a question, does 52W x4 mean each channel can put out a max of 52W or is that a combined max of 52W split over the 4 channels?

For the front doors, I have 6" 2way 190W sony's, which I decided to go for over the 250W 4 way speakers. Reason - I have read that sony is a much better audio speaker brand than LG, and that anything more than 3 way speakers is really just a gimmick. And all have the same frequency range.

For the back board, I have 6x9" 300W sony speakers, which seem pretty decent. It was that over the 400W LG 4 ways.

I wont need an amp to run any of this will I? The head unit alone should be enough right? I dont plan to blast the windows out, I just want to listen to clear music.

Is that better?

Well, I personally I prefer Pioneer when it comes to head units, but as long as your happy :)

You have made an excellent choice to go with Sony speakers. Your head unit would be sufficient to power the speakers. The 52W output is per speaker: 52W x 4. Frequency only come into play when you start to use amps. A standard installation like this would always run at 4ohms.

Let me know how the installation went
