Hey guys ...
Best contracts out for the Desire at the moment? (around R500pm -> +-200 minutes anytime )
Found these through Nashua Mobile:
R487.50 on MTN Anytime 350 - Phone is "free" with "Hardware Subsidy Fee = R129.00"
and
R387.50 on MTN Anytime 200 - Phone is "free" with "Hardware Subsidy Fee = R179.00"
Vodacom is well over R500 for these contracts.
Anyone know some better deals? :D

Cheapest vodacom contract is R300 (business call at R185pm + R114 device payment).
i Took out the MTN anytime 200 for R339pm - R200 airtime. Best deal at the moment by far.

Ya the contract is cool, except for the fact you get nothing with it. So everything yuo use you will have to pay for at the end of the month, can really bite you in ass if you not carefull.
That contract is better if you take it out just for the phone. You can pay the device monthly at R300pm instead of having to fork out R6k straight up

Scooby6
24-05-2010, 11:35 AM
Yep ... IF you don't really make calls, then the business chat is cool ... but if you use 200 minutes or so every month, a "free minutes" contract is better, else you will end up spending more.
Agreed ... contract is more affordable than R6k once off.

I've been due for an upgrade on my MTN upgrade for months now & seriously thinking of going with The Desire... Is there a music buying solution on the 'droid market place to rival iTunes? It's toss up between waiting for OS 4 & The Desire. I currently don't own a smart phone & have an ipod touch for in-car & portable music. And is there a solution to access paid apps in the South African 'droid store yet? An iTunes type work around would be fine too.

You can use Market Enabler (i think its called that) which gives you access to the paid apps. I am not sure if you have to root the phone first.
And i don't think there is an iTunes type store for android yet. I am waiting to see what happens with the iPhone 4 before i jump onto the Desire bandwagon.

Not the one I linked to in the official android thread. But it looks like it only works for vodacom Desires.

Just a query, in terms of battery power, how much does the Talk app use? I used to use gTalk all day, every day on my old Nokia and was wondering what the consensus is regarding that app's battery usage for the Desire? I would prefer not to see my new Desire go down in a ball of battery drainage as a result of one app.
Surely they must have optimised it, considering it is effectively a google phone.

I'm not to sure about gtalk, but the battery life is really not that good. I'm struggling to make a day.

I'm hoping it improves.

It improves, probably through a combination of decreased usage & the battery reporting its status more accurately after a few charges. I remember with my old WinMo Touch Pro the battery level indicator was completely confused for a couple of days after flashing a new ROM. I think the Desire might exhibit similar behaviour, and (this is complete conjecture) Android shuts down when the phone thinks the battery is nearly drained, even if it isn't quite...

I'm making about a day with the battery now (7:30 til about 22:00). Generally I will leave the "mobile data" turned off (there's a seperate widget for it so I have that and power control). I'll leave everything off in the morning and get some work done. Then when I turn on mobile data I'm checking gmail and chatting on gtalk a lot. After I leave work I pretty much do browsing on the phone (easier than getting out 12" laptop which is generally a browsing machine) with the dolphin hd browser. Also play some games etc and this kills off the last bit of my battery.

I cant believe how expensive HTC mobile smartphones are! I looked at an HTC Legend this morning, nearly R6000.00 with no contract, or about R300 a month with a R2000 pay in. Holy crap! Thats more than some decent TVs.

Worth it?

Got the full body invisibleshield. Looks good but not on the phone yet. Comes with some spray stuff and a piece of plastic to help with applying it. I'm guessing the spray stuff is some sort of evaporating lubricant to ensure there's no air bubbles etc. Will probably apply it tonight and maybe take some pics.

lol, just got mine delivered (DHL). Also had a quick look at the contents.... I watched the online tutorial for applying the shield, the spray makes it easier to adjust positioning. The recommended dry time is a bit hectic tho! Hopefully I will get my desire late next week....

That links to a very old version. If you do your homework then you too could have it working perfectly on your phone with detailed voice prompts, delivered on time.

You could even plan your route before you leave your wifi network, and have the map cached on your SD card to reduce data usage :)

There is a warranty unlike Expansys who offer no warranty (unless it is at your expense). Plus CaCell are selling the Desire for R5900... So cheap is the new expensive to you? Plus the Nexus One still sells for $529, excluding shipping and taxes of course, from the USA.

Sorry, the HTC Desire is R5,923.02 at www.expansys.co.za, which is R23.02 more than CaCell. But for that R23.02 it was worth it to me as I was guaranteed an phone untouched by Leaf. I actually have an upgrade due right now, but decided the Leaf aggravation wasn't worth it.

Ive got a thin but proper 5mm scratch in my display, and no idea where it came from.
It's minor aslong as it does not happen again, but I think those shields are usefull for those unforseen moments... I didnt know about this 'anti-scratch' stuff... is it enabled by default? :D hehe.

Okay, so also due for an upgrade...Took in my Tytn2 for repairs at Brooklyn Square, then asked/got asked about upgrading as well...and I told the girl there: Hell yeah! And she called me on what phone I want...the Desire;-) Sharp chick:-)

Anyhow, I asked her if they have stock, she said Nay, but made a phone call, and said she will have 1 for me tomorrow...I don't know if she will pull it off, but I have about 10 MTN shops numbers on my phone along the routes I will be driving. Whoever has 1 in stock will get my business:-)

I have been using Android 2.1 on my Tytn2 for the last few months, so a lot of my syncing contacts and so on has been prepared and readied for Android, so all will Sync well I am sure:-)

Also, another tip. On Gmail, you can group your contacts. On your phone, on your contacts list you can then choose the group/groups it must display(Menu>Gmail).

Does anyone know any brick and mortars that stock the invisishield?

Last night I installed ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD for HTC Desire/Bravo. I got it through Expansys. You get the front screen shield, the back cover shield and various pieces that shield the sides of the Desire. After 18hrs, my impressions are.

I like:

- 'gripping' of the back and side panels, it makes me more confident when I’m holding my phone
- I didn’t have any trouble applying it without bubbles and as advertised, the micro bubbles will disappear after 12 to 24hrs.

I do not like:

- The name 'invisible' seems somewhat misleading because it’s clearly a visible and makes the Desire look glossy and cheap.
- The screen feels "grippy" due to friction, negatively affects the smooth finger-sliding motion across the screen and attracts finger print grease trails.

My advice:
- You only get one chance to install this. Make sure you clean your screen immaculately before applying it and use a lot of the fluid when applying the screen shield.

rorz0r
02-06-2010, 04:17 PM
Agree it's clearly visible. Makes the phone look very gloss and shiny, especially on the back.
The screen basically feels like you're using it with a condom, sucks a bit at first but after a while you don't notice it. Still reacts properly etc just feels funny.

The instructions say you can remove it and re-apply but I doubt it will be as good.

Mine seems to be collecting "fur" around the edges of the screen. I think maybe I just put it in my pocket while it was still a bit sticky as it's gotten better over the past few days. I would suggest keeping it in a clean cover of some sort if you have for the first few days at least.

Whilst you also have a good chance of not bricking it... Kind of a redundant argument but anyway. I apologise if it is bad advice for the layman but probably also advising not going through eXpansys due to their lazy/poor after sale service that I for one have experienced.

What does one recommend as a data add-on package for an Android phone?

I was thinking along the lines of a 300mb package. Would that prove sufficient ?

Got my Desire today...incredibly impressed! Phoned just about every MTN shop in PTA, Southdowns eventually told me the only Desire is at Fourways, which meant trekking all the way to Joburg. Get to Fourways, they have the phone, and get ready to upgrade, and then they tell me I have to pay in because I am upgrading early. (I got phoned last week to be let know I can upgrade) So I say, sure...whats 500 bucks...I NEED the phone...Then they tell me they can't process the payment for 24 hours, so I told them there is no way I am coming to Joburg again, how or where can I pay? So they said: Northgate...So I trek to Northgate, get my number, go get food at the P&P, eat, go inside, wait....Maybe an hour or so of waiting. I get helped, the guy looks at my stuff, says I don't need to pay in. They have stock...20 Minutes later I was sitting trembling in my car amazed at the pure awesomeness of the phone! The sales guy told me to empty the battery, then charge for 8 hours...I could barely drive straight!

First impressions(Considering I am an android veteran): The thing is bloody amazing!

Get Astro or eStrongs file manager off the market & use its task manager to kill things that crash - I had CoPilot die on me today... For the rest, forget about task killers; they aren't necessary.

had some weird things happen with my contacts today...My dad's number has always been on my Google Contacts, but whenever I open it on my phone the contacts app crashes. Went on Google and edited it, now it seems fine. With my boss it's still doing it though:-?

Even though i stufed up a bit putting my sheild on, after two days it looked much better. It has a rubbery feel to it. The Touch screen still works just as well. If you look at the sheild on the screen from an angle, you can see it is not smooth. I believe it is a polymer coating of some sort, that "self heals" itself. If it lasts, I think it is worth it.

The update for the magic did take a while though, but it did eventually come out. Hopefully leaf can learn from their mistakes and get the updates for the Hero and Desire out quicker. Settings, Wireless and Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names

For MMS you should have

Name: MTN MMS
APN: myMTN

Port: <Not set>
Username: mtnmms
Password: mtnmms
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.mtn.co.za/mms/wapenc

Try sending an MMS from your number to your number. If that does not work then either you not provisioned for mms or settings are wrong. If it works but you still cannot send/receive mms from other numbers, then problem is on MTN's side. Is your number ported to MTN?

To Root or not to Root? does it support South Africa? if so what is the best rom to use

where/ how can i backup if i do root?

I'd say the main advantage to rooting is the ability to install tons of appz into SD card. If this is not an issue for you, rather wait for official Desire Andriod 2.2 update which will have ability to install/copy appz to SD Card.

I rooted mine a day after I bought it. Now, I've installed tons of appz into SD card. No more low memory/space issues. I been using MoDaCo Custom ROM with no issues so far.

what happens if you need to upgrade to 2.2 later this month? I do know the HTC leaf version due will be upgraded much later, but they locking off quite a bit when they do

Not at all! The custom ROM is based on Official HTC Desire ROM with a few tweaks. You still retain ur SENSE UI. I always prefer customs ROMs and hacking my phone LOL. Rooting means I will get Customs Android 2.2 before HTC or Leaf releases it.

Yes... Remove the widget from your home screen and re-add it. Scroll through the available clock styles and select the normal HTC flip-clock style (I think it's option 3). Once you've confirmed the style & location, it asks whether you want to 'Use full screen animation'. Obviously, make sure that's ticked.

The animations are sometimes easy to miss, as they only run after unlocking the phone and only until you touch the screen...

Thanx Mate :D

I am gonna be rooting tonight :D

I have read most of the documentations here (http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/),

sounds simple enough, My only Question is where does one get the ROMs from, is there a comparison list between which ROM is the best one to work with?

I see you using MoDaCo Custom ROM,
The one they talk about in the guide is: r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed
another two i found: Pays-ROM Desire Sense v2.0 (Rocksolid) (BraveSoul)

Does anyone know the difference between the two, which is safe and more reliable?

If any of you rooted please could you post what ROM you using :)

Edit: If you used MoDaCo ROM Alpha r22.1 do you experience these Known Issues:

Bluetooth does not work reliably
FM Radio finds stations but does not produce any sound
Footprints camera view is rotated 90 degrees
USB mount notification does not fire - use 'USB Mount' application from menu.

the 4gb msd seems rather small. i just want to know whether one can just put in any micro sd card into the phone. i have seen 16gb ones for about 650 bucks. would be cool to put that in instead of the measly 4gb

Far as I can remember, the Desire supports up to 32gb. Although increased storage will only really come into its own with Android 2.2's support for installing apps to sd card... And yes, I know about apps2sd, but I'm keeping my phone unrooted for now.

I so want to root, as my space is long gone (Phone not even a week old), but I don't like the idea of messing with it now. I unlocked my previous HTC(Tytn2) and had no issues. In fact, ran Android on it a lot of the time. When I get it back I am gonna try to make it a full fledged Android phone completely, but waiting for MTN to fix it for me first;-)

I think I will try the patience approach...I am not a patient person, but I will try for now.

You don't need a Modaco ROM to root your phone. Rooting just purely allows you "Superuser" rights which are normally locked by the service provider. All other functionalities remain the same.

Changing your ROM (Modaco) does require a rooted phone.

So you can use the phone like normal, but its just rooted, and you dont need to install a diff ROM. In other words, can you root the phone purely to gain access to the SD card to save apps on it, and leave everything else unchanged?

Sorry but I don't entirely understand how it works.

@cyb3rt

Rooting the phone gives you the freedom to use other operating systems (Roms) and features that the manufacturers / network operators would not like you having access too...

In most cases an alternative rom is required as Rooting / unlocking the phone either erases the original rom or makes it unusable... so you will most likely have to install another rom once you have rooted the phone...

Settings, Wireless and Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names

For MMS you should have

Name: MTN MMS
APN: myMTN
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: mtnmms
Password: mtnmms
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.mtn.co.za/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: 196.11.240.241
MMS Port: 8080
MMS protocol :Wap 2.0
MCC: 655
MNC: 10 or 103
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN Type: mms

Try sending an MMS from your number to your number. If that does not work then either you not provisioned for mms or settings are wrong. If it works but you still cannot send/receive mms from other numbers, then problem is on MTN's side. Is your number ported to MTN?

Thanks for the info it does not work any other advise? how do i check/know if my number is ported to MTN?

Has anybody done it, and how is the experience after? On the Desire specifically.

Can you possibly Nudge me in the right direction as to how do you root the HTC desire, but without changing the ROM?

I am really keen to lean how this stuff works. I have installed the Android SDK, and even created my own little emulated Droid on the PC, I wanna eventually learn how to programme apps for this platform

do you need to for apps2sd?

People are "Rooting" there phones and changing to different ROM's for that exact reason. All versions of Android from 2.1 downwards don't allow for saving of apps onto the SD card. Most if not all "cooked" ROMs have apps2sd.

The new version of Android 2.2 does allow it and rumour has it that HTC will release it towards the end of June.

There is a risk, and i thought i almost bricked mine when i followed nimu's instructions, but it was my gold card that wasn't created right, if you want to make the GC easily format to FAT32 and use the GoldCard Tool creater to make your GC, the email service is up for your personalisedSdCard.img, at least that can be your pill.

I like the fact that at least Modaco has a recovery option though :)

It is confusing, when it comes to the ROMs, thats why i ask anyone out there who can help us with what ROMS you are using where you don't lose functionality and can still have our peanut peeled on both sides :D

HTC will release it June, Leaf only in 12 months, so Rooting is def the way to go, there is also alot of bonus functionality unlocked too, kinda like playing Need 4 Speed :D

BTW,

how cool is this if your Droid is on wifi, use google maps, search an address, then click more, and the LIL man icon for street view, Then go Menu > Compass mode on, here is a compass mode that rotates as you turn around, Android Rocks YooTooB Vid: http://bit.ly/ccGICm

I thought it was dodgy too, but remember if your card is a gold card then it will always be a gold card you need to do the repair process to make it normal again,

This is the instructions, seems easy to do for r5 :

Note: This process will wipe your device and there is currently no option to backup your device ROM before you start.
Make your microSD card into a goldcard by following these instructions (it's a good idea to back up the contents of your card first!).
Unzip the file you downloaded to a directory, then open a command prompt / terminal window at that directory.
Turn off your HTC Desire, then turn it back on with the 'back' button held down. You'll see 'FASTBOOT' written on the screen in a red box. Connect the phone to the computer.
In the terminal window, enter either 'step1-windows.bat', './step1-mac.sh' or './step1-linux.sh' as appropriate.
When this step has completed, REMOVE THE GOLDCARD and either format it and replace, or replace with a different (non goldcard) microSD.
Navigate to the 'BOOTLOADER' and then 'RECOVERY' option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.
In the terminal window, enter either 'step2-windows.bat', './step2-mac.sh' or './step2-linux.sh' as appropriate.
When this has completed, your device should be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe' option, then select the option to apply an update zip from sdcard, and select 'rootedupdate.zip'. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE!
Troubleshooting

If you have any issues with the root process, post below, and we'll do our best to help!

Entering recovery in future

Included with the root script is a script for entering recovery in the future. To use...
Turn on the device with the volume button held down
Navigate to the 'RECOVERY' option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.
In your terminal window, enter either 'recovery-windows.bat', './recovery-mac.sh' or './recovery-linux.sh' as appropriate.
It is recommended that you do NOT use the 'USB mount' functionality in the recovery image!
And finally!

If you wish to do so, you can express your appreciation by signing up to a MoDaCo Ad Free or MoDaCo Plus Account using PayPal or Google Checkout, as detailed in this post on MoDaCo. As well as donating to support the work that goes into all the various MoDaCo activites, you get cool stuff like free software (there's some great Android stuff coming too!), an ad free MoDaCo site and of course access to the MoDaCo Online Kitchen. All signups are very much appreciated.

AAh I see where you went wrong, check your GC with HXD Hex Editor, hook the SD card up even with a card reader, Open the disk with HXD in tab 1 and your GC img in tab 2 as in here

switch between the two tabs, the first 170 lines should be the same, if not your GC creation failed.

If your GC is correct, then

at step 1.bat you need to select fastboot (boxed in red), else it will say waiting for device, be patient, sometimes you might not think its doing something but it is, you should see in CMD:

If you doing this with windows machine, then try rebooting computer, there is a problem with the step1.bat, for windows the code should read like this for the r5-desire:

@echo off
echo Desire Root Step 1
echo.
echo Erasing cache and rebooting in RUU mode...
echo.
fastboot-windows.exe erase cache
fastboot-windows.exe oem rebootRUU
echo.
echo About to start flash...
fastboot-windows.exe flash zip testimage.zip
echo.
echo THE ERROR IS NORMAL, DO NOT TURN OFF THE PHONE
echo.
echo System is now waiting 15 Seconds before reflashing testimage.zip
sleep 15
echo.
fastboot-windows.exe flash zip testimage.zip
echo.
echo Rebooting to bootloader...
echo.
fastboot-windows.exe reboot-bootloader
echo.
echo Step 1 complete - now use the bootloader menu to enter recovery mode.

I have been waiting 3 weeks for my HTC DESIRE, then yesterday vodacom phones me and says it has arrived. So i go in and then want to choose my talk package, but then they say that i am only qualified to take up to top up 135 and have to pay in 4500 for the phone. I was WTF  !!!!!!! They said that i have to wait 7 months to create a credit record, before they will allow me to go on a higher package! I just waited a month to get the phone, now i have to wait 7 months? by that time, the Iphone 4 and other things will be out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want it nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!! !! I hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttttttttt tttttttttttttttttteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee vodacom.

why did theynot tell me this when i ordered it?

im not sure what you need but go into the MTN store, and they will help you out :D

BTW Just out of curiosity, does anyone know in those vodacom contracts, they send you, You are signing and waiving rights and liabilities away there, what if you dont agree to sign away your rights and do hold them liable, and you decide to edit the contract, reprint it, but because they wording is so small and since nobody even reads it(even them) they accept your contract and activate you, will it still be a legal contract that they accepted?

I had a look, they apparently using Cyanogen's modded ROM which may have the ability to put in proxy details, however there is no option for user credentials. I do know you can set up proxy in the APN settings under mobile networks, but this does not work

But it seems they are mentioning apps to do that in the appstore... so maybe an app can add that option...

I found out that when they say you are due for an upgrade, it doesnt mean that you are at the end of you contract. so when i wanted to cancel my contract and go somewhere else to get the HTC Desire, they said i cant, since i still have 3 months left on my contract. WTF? vodacom are ****ing me over at every corner!!!!!!!!!*********s!! now i have to wait till august, just to cancel. by then new phones will be out and i will have to decide all over again!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

@Philosopher: The joys of S.A. ... You can upgrade at any time... for a price... buggers...

With regards to choosing all over again... it might be while before HTC comes out with something to top the Desire... then again, it could be tomorrow... but for now, Desire FTW!!

That's totally standard with contracts since for ever. When you started your previous contract that was for 24 months, so Vodacom isn't screwing you over... they are just holding you to the contract that you willingly signed with them two years ago. The fact that you can upgrade before the contract ends is just a way for the providers to twist your arm to keep you as a customer. I'm not quite sure why you want to cancel Vodacom to get a Desire, since I got a Desire with Vodacom with quite a good deal.

I was also almost considering moving the MTN, but when I heard their customers had exactly the same kind of problems I decided to stay put. It doesn't matter much which cellular provider you are with these days, you will have good experiences and you will have bad ones.

Can anyone confirm that the desire is available on MTN anytime 200 for only R200? And if so is it from MTN stores or MTN direct?

The Philosopher
14-06-2010, 08:12 PM
oronte, i was there on sunday. you can get a desire on anytime 200 but have to pay in about 140 bucks a month extra.

Knersus, i never heard of that before. the thing is they wont let me get an upgrade, until 7 months have passed. the thing is the contract only just go transferred to my name. so i dont have a credit history, so they wont let me go onto a higher package. so i have to wait 7 months to get a desire or get on in 2 months time with mtn.

Got mine on the Anytime 200, but The Philosopher is correct....it's an extra R140 a month on top of that(excluding extra usage/data) that you will have to pay. That's the contract I am on. My contract technically only expires in October, but was due for an upgrade from the beginning of this month...did not have a big hassle to get it done. But one thing also happened, one shop asked me R500 to "finish" the contract, but they could not take payment immediately, so I asked where I can pay immediately, and they send me to North Gate MTN...Got there, and they said there is no pay in....Got the upgrade....only extra cost was R140 or something, but that will be on my bill.

The Philosopher, my vote is that you port. Honestly, Vodascum ticked me off so badly that I left with my previous upgrade. Takes a few days, but I was too glad to have moved on. One thing that sucked with MTN however was I had such crap signal where I live. So bad that I considered porting back to Vodascum. But then the upgrade call came, I told them to bugger off....but I could not get this Desire out of my head...So I upgraded...And I am happy...this phone has much better signal! Only flaw: The space for apps....but I patiently await Froyo...then things will be nothing but awesome:-)

Sounds like you have a complicated situation. Is this your first contract, and if I understand you only recently started/transferred it? What sort of contract was this?

That's the problem with contracts vs pay as you go, you can easily get painted into a corner. Anyways, I hope you figure out a way to get the Desire soon, it's well worth it!!

Hi guys,

As you can see I am new to the forums as a member, but I've read quite a few things on here before. I am going to be getting my Desire on Monday or Tuesday, once the phone is delivered to the Vodashop I did my upgrade at.

I just wanted to know if you guys that have them, have had any issues or problems with them, and also, I was told today that HTC is leaving South Africa, and that we will then struggle with after sales support and so on? Is this true, or just something from the rumor mill?

Thanks for all the info in this thread though, it's great, I read it from page one to now, lol!

HTC was never here to begin with, they sell the phones through a local subsidiary, LEAF Technologies and I doubt they will be leaving anytime soon...

Unless off course they come out with a law preventing companies from ripping customers off...

J_Bay

lol...thanks...I know that Leaf is the agent, but what was said is that HTC phones will no longer be available here at all, once the current stock is used up!

Hi Sorry was away.

I checked with the provider and certain things were cleared up.
The offer I mentioned was made specifically for our company account so it will not apply to all.
They didn't actually make the offer. I showed them pricing on vodacom direct's website for the Desire and asked them to come up with a deal.

Sorry for confusion

I know lol I meant no up front pay-in :p I seriously don't get why you should pay R7000+ for a phone that's only R6000. I don't really care about the added extras like free minutes/free data/free sms's, I just want the phone =\
