View Full Version : GPRS very slow in Hanover, Karoo

I'm not sure how many of the Nokia Oberservation Cameras are out there, but the one I'm operating to monitor a property in Hanover in the Karoo is proving to have a difficult time.

It works pretty well in doing the necessary detections, and dispatches the intrusion SMSes instantaneously but on e-mailing or MMSing the photo's of the intrusion, the trouble starts (actually gets worse <grin>). Average file sizes of the photos are between 80 and 280Kb, but it takes up to 15 minutes to upload each image, and even worse in a lot of cases it actually fails in doing so, with the camera duly informing me via SMS of its failure to do so :D

I'm less than 1km away from the main tower (388A/Hanover Caltex) and I'm not sure how far from 1060A/Andriesfontein VC (which I guess is shared with Vodacom hence VC?). When I connect with my laptop to the camera, it indicates a signal strength of 4/5 bars consistently.

To ensure that I don't phone the police for a false alarm, getting the image would be a good start, but if this continues could cause a problem. The PT-6 also allows you to phone in and listen to what's going on to confirm the intrustion .... but can only take the call if it is not actively transmitting via GPRS .... and that means that for up to half an hour I'm unable to phone in unless I phone exactly at a time when it is not uploading.

Any advice?

I need to get this working properly ... in a town without any security companies, alarms have proved to be useless (unfortunately in a lot of cases the SAPS as well), so this piece of equipment is supposed to assist in determining break-ins and providing evidence. (In the past week: window removed, corugated iron sheet on roof removed and access through ceiling attempted, as well as tried to dig a hole through the wall!)

And it monitors the temperature, too :) Instructions for making coffee for the burglars were not included.

Have you tried the Nokai External Antenna Adapter Cable XRM-1?

According the the product site it can be used in places where GSM network coverage is weak. The Nokia Observation Camera can be connected to an external antenna by using the external antenna adapter cable

Well, that's certainly an option, but should one need an external antenna less than 1km from the tower?

I notice from another thread that over the past few days lots of people experienced slow GPRS speeds, even in EDGE areas. Unfortunately Hanover is not EDGE enabled, providing only GPRS, so one probably experience it even worse.
