I totally agree with you.

Refer to my previous posting (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=235157#post235157) .

I also phoned 808. They told me 3G coverage is mainly in the CBD areas. They also said that if I do have a 3G device, it would give me and indication if I am in a 3G reception area. But what if one first want to establish if you do have 3G coverage before purchasing a 3G device ?

Go to www.gsmworld.com for a map on 3G coverage worldwide.

my experience with the coverage maps, especially MTN, is that it is wildly overoptimistic in some areas, if you go down to street level.
big red sea of HSDPA map coverage does not neccesarily mean great signal or speed at that point, or from experience even real 3G/HSDPA coverage at all.
given up on trying to get explanation from MTN's guys, or when actual HSDPA can be expected, several lodged queries to MTN remain unanswered after months., so wait & see, guess we'll get there when we get there.
best to go and check coverage for your self
