I've never been a fan of "traditional" board games like Monopoly, Scrabble, Risk etc.

But a few years ago I started playing Settlers of Catan (and a number of the expansions) and really enjoyed it.

Right now I'm playing Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game quite often - it's awesome!

Do you guys play any boardgames and if so, what?

I played War hammer if that counts. Kinda like a board game. I was the undead army. Was sooo much fun. You had to assemble and pain the army(which was the best thing about it)

That's more tabletop war games which is super involved. You can't really just set up and play 2-3 games in an evening with some mates.

You enjoy it? I think Settlers is very good/.

I have all those games that you are not a fan of on my cellphone - Monopoly, Risk, and Scrabble. I often get a game in after hopping into bed. Usually gets me sufficiently sleepy! ;)

I play a variant of Risk called Risk GodStorm in which in addition to your traditional Risk dynamics you get Gods that can perform miracles resulting in the destruction of entire continents, elimination of sea routes, the destruction of enemy forces, the bolstering of your own etc.

Also when your armies die they go to the underworld and fight for dominance there. Through temples placed on the actual board you can bring your armies from the underworld back to life.

It sounds really complex but it is quite fun. That and it only goes on for 5 turns and at the end all the points are added up and everything is decided so the game doesn't go on for DAYS like traditional Risk could.

That actually sounds pretty cool.
Used to hang around with Mormons and play Risk back in the day - suppose I left that game cos there was no coffee :p
*hopes his Mormon buddy never reads this :p *

@ Tatum - I recall MAD, but for the life of me can't remember anything about the board game, but know that I used to play.

Yep. All the German style board games are awesome. Very dependent though on having suitably awesome opponents & vibe. With the wrong ones its just painful experience.

I play Go/Baduk, but only because I want to become an individual of quality, and because it takes decades to master, and because sentient beings on other planets also play it (or something similar), and because it exercises your intuition, creativity and will power, but unfortunately it doesn't teach one to write shorter sentences.

Do yourself a favour and pick up Settlers of Catan - it's quite simple to learn and requires only 3 people. Once you have the game, surely you can cajole 2 mates into joining you for a game or three?

mad was awesome... should ask my mom if she still has it. you always had to do the opposite from normal games, like giving all your money away.

Sit on your hands and cluck like a chicken - gain one egg and lose $200 :D

I love catan, in fact me and a buddy are in the process of making a custom 3d catan board.
We are designing it in 3d then we're going to router a negative it out of perspex on my router.
Then we will vacuum mould the positives out of ABS / Styrene, then paint and then play!

Board Games cupboard:

1 x standard monopoly
1 x hi-tech monopoly ( with credit card machines )
1 x MAD
1 x CLuedo
1 x Risk
1 x Uno ( yes its a card game but still! )
1 x Cosmic Chess.

I won two copies of the board game cosmic chess when I was a child. Basiclly its a four player chess game where each player is limited to six pieces ( 2 x castles , 2 x bishops , queen and king ). The board had certain no go areas that added difficulty to the game and you either won by eliminating your opponents or got you Command Ship ( king ) to a planet in the center of the board.

OMW, so was I, I absolutely loved the game. My opponents didn't, when I took them down with such fervour. Of course, the same happened to me on occasion as well. :D

Yeah, to win you had to lose all your money, remember the $1mil note (or was it $100 thousand?), that was much like the "Go To Jail" card from Monopoly. :D

Risk Godstorm

A fun variant of classic risk where you can summon gods that can perform miracles like sinking entire continents beneath the sea. Very complicated but once you learn the extra rules it is quite fun.

I'm an avide board-gamer, and have been for the past two years or so. It started off at a games day with Descent: Journeys in the Dark, and from there I was hooked!

At present I'm playing a few different games (I love most board/card games):

Gears of War: The Board Game - this really is fantastic. It's similar to the current D&D adventure games, but I find it a bit more refined and with smarter AI. I do love the idea that your hand of cards counts as your health.

Granada - a Euro game that's a spin-off from Alhambra. The mechanics are almost identical, except that you can flip the buildings, and values are variable.

Death Angel: The Card Game - based off of the Warhammer 40K Space Hulk board game. 1) this doesn't cost an arm and a leg 2) it's 1-6 players. You're stuck aboard a Space Hulk, which is infested with Tyranids. You need to choose the right actions/strategies in order to survive this punishing game

That's it for now, but there are tons more.

Used to play the board game versions of Tom Clancy's Novels - Red Storm Rising and Hunt for Red October. Nato v Warsaw Pact
Red Storm, was the land/Air battle for Europe and Red October the Naval Battles North Atlantic
Nice thing was you could combine the 2 games to create one big 2 person game.

Now only really play:

Backgammon
Chinese Chequers
and Bao

Fantastic - thanks!

You're welcome

The rules seem different to the game i learned in Zanzibar, there we "loaded" the whole board with 2 "stones" per cup, and i remember the first play for each player had to start from either the left or right end of the front row, and had to go down the front row not round the back row.
After the first round for each player you could start from any cup.
I suspect the version i played was more a basic/quick simple rule version.
