oh, but that's a bit of a hassle. I would like it if they had an electronic prepaid facility.

the reason I'm asking if it carries over, is that Vodacom would be cheaper if it doesn't.
On Vodacom:
1GB (now 1.2) over two months @ R289.00 = R144.5 per 500MB (now 600)

2 months with Telkom (500MB) = R 298
2 months with Vodacom (1GB) = R 578

The out of bundle rate for Telkom is 30c per MB, what is Vodacom charging?

2 months with Telkom (500MB) = R 298

but can you use it over 2 months or does it expire after a month?

Telkom’s 3G bundles expires every month.

The thing is, you need to purchase your bundle according to your own requirement.
If you are only going to use 500MB then you only buy a 500MB bundle.

If you only go over sometimes then it will only cost you 30 cents extra per MB.

If you constantly exceed 1GB then rather buy a 1GB bundle.

A Vodacom MyGig 1.2 costs R289.00 per month (no contract) and out of bundle cost is R 1.20 per MB.

A Telkom Do on the move 1GB costs R219 per month (no contract) and out of bundle cost is R0.30 per MB.

Vodacom Carry-over Rules "...any data purchased or allocated is valid until the last calendar day of the next month...”

...
For me that means that telkom bundles are more expensive. I buy a big enough vodacom bundle at the beginning of a month and use it until the end of the next month...

How much does your bundle cost?
Do you buy every month this bundle?
