I just want to find out... how can we, here in SA get our Hero's to android 2.0 or 2.1. It seems that South Africans are clueless and our network operators, well.... what can I say! I read that HTC Hero Sprint got the update yesterday, May 20? Can we download that update, will it work? How long do we have to wait?????

FYI, the Sprint Hero is not the same as the HTC Hero:

Googling got me to a page that explains it all, although it's rather dated: http://www.emoiz.com/how-to-install-android-2-1-on-htc-hero
The best place to go is XDA-developers forums. They have all the latest stuff and tons of information and mods.

Yes, but what do I search for under the forums? What HTC hero do we have here in SA. All they can talk about is the Hero Sprint.

I don't know man!
I would also like to hear from someone in SA who installed 2.1 on their Hero and which ROM they used and some feedback...
Preferably I would like to wait for an official ROM but if it takes too long I will go for a custom ROM from XDA dev's.
The HERO we have in SA is the: HTC Hero: G2 Touch.
The HTC Hero (advertised as the HTC Hero Graphite by Orange UK and G2 Touch by T-Mobile UK)

I have tried out 2.1 ROMS, and I went back to 1.5, the 2.1 ROMS are rather slow I find and I actually prefer the interface of 1.5.

what method did you root your phone?
I tried the image recovery and it didnt work so now I have to do the entire shlep of the gold card method. Not sure if its worth it.

Try out Froyo on your PC perhaps first?

So, if we have to wait then for the 2.1 official upgrade in SA, HOW LONG are we going to wait? Does anybody know when we will have the update? Is it worth wile to flash the rom and upgrade to 2.1? How do you flash the rom?

It's worthwhile. But just get 2.2 not 2.1. Don't wait for the official update for SA. It'll take forever. Do it yourself. Duncan1a has already done it and posted instructions.

Have had several conversations with Leaf regarding the Hero upgrade. Bottom line is.. it's not happening. Rooting is the only way... and we are forced to as mostapps don't work on the old ROM versions...
Apparently leaf negotiated zero rated upgrade via FOTA with the networks and have passed the firmware to the networks to rollout. AFAIK the networks are testing the firmware for rollout and this has been the case for quite a while now, unless you have any other newer info. I can't avoind to void the warranty yet by rooting, just don't feel comfortable without the protection.

If you mean what I think you mean, i.e. you can't afford to risk losing the warranty, then I agree with you.
Are we the only country in the entire world, where the HTC Hero is available, that does not yet have 'legal' access to the 2.1 version of the ROM? Does leaf.co.za even give a damn?

Been searching various forums, but it looks like the Hero has been abandoned. I definitely won't be giving HTC SA (or Leaf) any more of my business when my contract comes up for renewal.

x2 .. I also decided that as soon as I read that the entire world had the Hero update to 2.1 .... the entire world excluding SA of course.
I asked VodacomData to follow up, which he kindly did (hence the fact that we know LEAF have provided the update to Vodacom), and his response to me was that his attempts to contact the Vodacom firmware testing people were fruitless. I dunno which will come sooner my one year warranty expiry so I can root or the OTA update...*sigh*. I don't know if any other contract android phones have received official updates through the networks in SA?

I'm on MTN Nashua Mobile contract ... nothing from them (but I have learned not to expect anything resembling good service from SA SPs)

I am considering rooting/flashing my phone, it does not seem that difficult. The problem is I don't know what ROM or instructions to use for SA Vodacom phones, because it seems like if you use the wrong instrustions, you can basically freeze your phone. I get a lot of links for GSM Hero, but will that work for our SA Hero? It sucks to know that there are better ROMS out there available but just not in SA.

I heard on the ps3za forum that you can take your Hero in to your nearest Leaf shop and they will upgrade it for you to Android 2.1.
I emailed Leaf Canal Walk via email, and they said that I can pop in to their MTN cubicle in Canal Walk Shopping centre and they will upgrade my Hero to 2.1.

I have just had my HTC Hero upgraded to the official HTC 2.1, by LAB88, a shop in Cedar Square, Fourways, Johannesburg. They are on the ground floor of Cedar Square (use entrance 3) just below the Leaf.co.za head-offices.
I was in and out of the shop in 10 minutes
Also see my post here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/262792-HTC-Hero-Latest-Firmware?p=4915955&viewfull=1#post4915955
I received an email from HTC telling me that the update is now available and to contact my local service provider for the update. So, I called Vodacare at Tygervalley who told me that they can do the official update - they said they required a 24hour turnaround time to do the update but when I pressed them they conceded to 2-3hours (dunno why cause its a simple and quick procedure, maybe just overestimating to make sure they deliver) . I'll also flash a custom ROM once the warranty has expired.

Do you guys now have Android 2.1 on your HTC Hero? And how is it?
I took my phone in this morning to VodaCare in Port-Shepstone, and they loaded 1.5 on again. They don't have a clue on Android 2.1?
Can I go to Leaf at La Lucia in KZN?

Yes
And how is it?
I'm using a whole lot more battery power. I have shut down apps I don't use regularly, but they keep re-opening

Will they be able to do the Android 2.1 software upgrade on my HTC Hero at Leaf Wireless in La Lucia?

Really? That's bad! Do you know where can I upgrade mine? I'm from the South Coast of KZN and the people here knows nothing!
Then I can one day drive to Durban to do the upgrade.

Did mine at Leaf Fourways, JHB it's great, but I too seem to loose battery quicker especially if wireless, 3g and bluetooth are on.

Vodacare can do it, they just have to find it on their system. It was loaded on the system 19/10/10 they wanted R250 to do it, Leaf was free.

I came right. I'm going to Pavillion next week to get a upgrade. :) :)
Got the official 2.1 Android update flashed at Vodacare Canal Walk last night, it was done within 30mins . Didn't pay anything for it, they just needed a proof of purchase so they could claim it under warranty as their warranty checking facility has not been functioning.
From playing with the phone so far, the update has better looking menus and widgets, bluetooth file transfer works and brightness adjustment toggle on the HTC power bar widget :), not sure about battery life yet.

Hey Dominic 92,
Saw on your blog that the android 2.2 update is coming to the Hero in November. Is your source credible?
BTW the link in your sig almost works.
