Cape Town - Another 164 000 tickets for the soccer World Cup will go on sale on Friday, FIFA announced on Wednesday.
Speaking at the ceremonial handover of Cape Town Stadium, FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said the tickets were spread across all 64 games.
He said this was the final tranche of tickets originally reserved for FIFA, that were being put back into the system.
"It becomes available on Friday morning, all the tickets... and then it's over."
A FIFA official said sales of these tickets would bring the total sold to 98% of the 2.88 million originally available.
I'm hoping to pick up a couple of tickets :D

That's flipping impressive for a tournament that was going to have empty stadiums...
Im quite curious. How many foreigners have bought tickets?
98% sold is awesome though!

There are 3 714 678 seats available for the 64 games. So it means, if FIFA are to be believed, that only about 75% of the seats have been sold.
It also means that there are close on a million tickets unaccounted for.

I think that your total figure is too high. If it's true it would mean that our stadiums are bigger than the USA used in 94. I think that we have just under 3 million seats for the WC.

I'm pretty sure that the stadiums will be filled to near capacity. I'm not confident about much in SA, but I am confident about the World Cup. Even if 80% of the tickets are sold to locals, it'll still be an amazing thing to be a part of :)

Many of the numbers dont make sense. 280,000 expected overseas visitors, 2.8million sold tickets. The biggest sports event on earth and only 15% of the tickets sold are coming to SA. Maths is not my strong point.. so please someone crunch numbers for me.. I am confused

You can look up each stadium and it will tell you how many seats there are and how many matches are being played at each stadium. Multiply the number together and add them all up and you come to the 3 714 678.
Another thing, when you go to buy a ticket it doesn't say 'Sold Out' it says 'Not Available'.

Maths being crunched, splines being reticulated - I added all the game seats available together and got the 3 714 678. It was stated that 98% of the 2 880 000 tickets have been sold. When you take that 98% over the 3 714 678 you end up with around 75% of total tickets available having been sold.

Next little bit of number abuse. South Africa gets around 300 000 tourists per month 'normally' so having 280 000 visitors is actually lower than we'd get if there was no band of FIFA brigands lurking about our fair land. Host a WC and you chase people away, not attract them, it would appear.
If we go to the question posed on other threads about who profits - well, it's FIFA and a select few 'officials'. The rest of the country will have fewer tourists. The next thing is that those tourists are shelling out big bucks for the match tickets, the airline ticket, and accomodation - more than your normal tourist pays to get here. Assuming their discretionary spend was on par, the soccer 'tourists' have less disposable income. For that month, South Africans, as a whole, are going to earn less from the tourism industry than we would have had we not had a WC.

Let's say half the tourists stay for longer than 2 weeks. That means half of the 280 K expected people will be in our country at the same time. This is not comparable to 300k spread over a month which also includes business travellers that normally are on short trips and don't spend much while they are in SA. If you are here on a 2 day business trip would you still be able to dash to the Kruger and to other attractions?

What are you on - of course it's comparable. We're talking about numbers of tourists, not tourist days. And there is a distinction between business travellers and tourists. But with the way any stats are collected in this country, who really knows?
Point is that the little lodges are expressing concerns that the numbers have dropped. The WC is driving some people away - why visit when you know that the prices are ridiculous. And I am not talking about the average Saffer trying to make a few extra bucks - there is the rest of the machine that sees the opportunity.
As for dashes to the Kruger - you are aware that Kruger was block booked and then a whole bunch of accomodation was released. Doesn't look like too many footie fans are dashing there either.
Still, I expect the games to be awesome. Even if the stands are only 3/4 full.

At no point have I ever said that the 3.7M tickets are available for sale. What I have said is that there are 1M seats that aren't accounted for. 98% of tickets being sold does not equate to full stadia but if you didn't question it you would think that the stadia are going to be full, that this WC is better than Germany, etc.

So your belief is that South Africa only has 300 000 tourists at anyone time?
But maybe it was me - leading you to that conclusion.
Allow me to restate. Based on figures from SA Tourism, South Africa has about 300 000 tourists arriving every month.
This is directly comparable to 280 000 people expected to arrive during the world cup. Instead of us having 300 000 people arrive during June/July, we will have 280 000 arrive. This is less than 'usual'. How long a soccer tourist stays may be in line with how long an ordinary tourist stays . For all intents and purposes you can assume that it is the same - unless you can predict the future.

Why would a corporate be given tickets?
I can understand sponsors and people associated with the teams. But it is in the order of about 15 000 tickets per game. In the case of Nelspruit that's like a third of the stadium.

On the "spectate". Everybody spectates but not all spectate tickets are made available for the public.
E.g.
Stadium A Semi-Final
1. 5,000 tickets for media e.g. journalists, both written etc.
2. 3,000 reserved for sponsors
3. 300 for VVIP's and VIP's
4. 1000 for FIFA workforce
5. 500 through FIFA ticket allocations
6. 4,000 through hospitality tickets bought by corporates etc
7. Seat kills, seats potentially lost due to poor views or camera areas or seats deemed dangerous
Poor example, I have exact numbers somewhere. Of the "66,000", you may find that only 40,000 go on sale.
After that 5,000 reserved for the FA of that nation or its "supporter" organization(s).
35,000 available to South African AND online to those abroad, of which 10% initially reserved for South Africans via Cat 4.

But those are not counted as tickets that are for sale to the general public. Some of those don't get distributed and may in some cases be returned. FIFA never says the tickets are sold out but they say tickets are currently unavailable.

I am not sure where you are trying to take this conversation. What it boils down to is that FIFA do not disclose how many tickets will be available as it is in their interests to artificially create a shortage, or perceived shortage.

The prices have remained constant, so I'm fine with that... if they were using the technique to sell tickets at inflated prices, then I'd have a problem - but more tickets being sold can only be good for SA. I'm hoping I can get a few last minute tickets tomorrow morning, although I'm fairly sure another 100k or so will go on sale again before the tournament :).

FIFA aren't shifting the goal posts one little bit. At least, not from their perspective. In order to 'sell' the next world cup they pitch up with their marketing figures - 98% of tickets sold blah blah blah. So, FIFA have 3.7M tickets at the stadiums and are fairly clueless about how many people are coming. They release 1M tickets and these get sold, They release another million, and those get sold too but a little slower, and so on. Then they get into the balancing act. Trying to sell enough tickets per game so that the marketing images (crowd scenes at the games) show full seats.
The short of it is that they are going to claim 98% tickets sold but on about 80% of the available seats.
It has been posted elsewhere that FIFA gives seats away to its sponsors and others. I am sure that is all good and well. Why not bring those seats into the account? Well, they can't guarantee that people will actually turn up for the game. So, in the unlikely event that a camera does show empty seats they will have an excuse.
It was also posted elsewhere that some of the seats are unsafe or are blocked by cameras. Well, that is just plain idiotic. How much money was spent building or refurbishing soccer stadiums to be unsafe? How much money was spent purpose preparing the stadia for the WC and then, oops, we forgot that cameras are needed. If that is true, I really hope that the contractors are refunding the money.

It's called FIFA double speak. The prices remained the same, they redeployed tickets from a higher price category to a lower price category. No, it isn't a discount.
The interest earned on the early sale of tickets is significant. Creating scarcity is enough to get people to buy early. The earlier they buy the more interest that can be earned on that sale. It's awesome - selling something that you don't have. And that the buyer has perceived satisfaction - brilliant - no complaints from them. Has anyone asked when South Africa will receive the revenue from the ticket sales?
Before you counter with the argument that surely it would be inFIFA's interest to sell all its tickets early so why would they create a shortage by withholding tickets? That's because of the marketing - FIFA can't have empty stadia. Empty stadia make ripping off the next host a little more difficult. They need to create scarcity so that people caught up in the hype will buy tickets to North Korea/Slovenia (or pick any two teams you'd really avoid). (And I don't know if these teams are playing each other - I suspect not but it is there for illustration of a point).

I got to the confirmation page, had put my CC details in and everything. And then the website crashes. Awesome.
that has happened to me at least 4 times in the last 2 months. I sent fifa a mail telling them how ridiculous their website is, they replied saying it's not their problem as it's hosted in South Africa

she has a few problems of course.
I mean it handles, flights, buses, accommodation, almost ALL event bookings, and yes during peak it has its flaws BUT
almost every checkers has one, every shopping centre.
FIFA's "ticketing centre" at Checkers in Century City and Plumstead consists of ONE computer, which has been broken for the past week.
MATCH ....= FAIL.

MATCH = FAIL, but computicket fails all the time too. They also suck at reserved seating, with people being issued with duplicates of other people's tickets.

there are still orange blocks showing on the availability page @ fifa.com... does this mean they might become available still?

Maybe, yes.

Yeh, I also think so
but considering using the planned ticket money now on some soccer bets, some cool odds out there
