I have a 32gb iPhone 3gs at the moment, however I can upgrade at the moment and was looking at the htc desire or htc HD 2.
or is there anything else better on the market that I have missed but is available here now?
Thanx for the help

Go with the desire. The Incredible is a better phone but it's not out yet here. And the Evo 4G will be awesome.

Agreed, Desire or wait for iPhone 4G. I have an HD2 and am not enjoying WM6.5 at all. Gone back to using 3GS as default hand set...

The arrival of the iphone 4 is imminent. I wouldn't touch a Windows phone before Windows Mobile 7 comes out - if ever.
You'll be able to upgrade to Apple OS 4.0 for $10 soon. Resist the upgrade urge and save on your monthly.

I would say the Desire is the best phone out in SA at the moment. I'm waiting for either the iPhone 4 or something very similar to the HTC Evo :D

The iphone 4G will most probably only be in SA in September 2010 or Feb 2010 depending on Apple's roll-out plan...so I would say if you can HOLD OUT until then, YOU will NOT be DISAPPOINTED:) I can't comment on HTC as I have not used them yet, but the Snapdragon processor is pretty awesome:)

I'm also pretty impressed with Samsung's Super Amoled screen tech, so consider the Galaxy S if you are inclined that way. Perfect outdoors visibility with Amoled colour reproduction and viewing angles... that's got to be worth something.

HTC Desire.
The super OLED seems nice, when you outside a lot (or on your phone outside at least). But the Desire is not bad at all on that aspect so it would not be a deal breaker for me.

If you're up for it, get a Nexus One from the US. The updates roll out fast (I'm already on Android 2.2) and I don't think there'll be a phone that can compete with the pace of development.
Either way, I'd definitely go with an Android phone. If you watched the day2 Google I/O keynote about Android how fast it's developing and leaving the competition behind

Why get a Nexus One when you can get an HTC Desire here? You can still root it and flash vanilla android 2.2 on it or just wait a while and get the HTC Android 2.2. You can get the desire on contract and cashflow wise is a bit better than shelling out for a nexus one.

Cost less before CaCell started selling the Desire for R5900.

(I loved that game demo with the iPad, was hillarious! And the Google Maps functionality is superb!)
Even if the iPhone 4G is an awesome phone, what good is it if Steve Jobs controls the software on it with an iron fist?
And this makes me really sad, cos I really like my iPhone 3G... but why can my sister simply drag and drop music folders to her Xperia X10, while I am forced to use iTunes for a simple, stupid function the phone should have had when I bought it? Oh, and dont get me started on the silly activation via iTunes before you can even use the phone. Had enough.

HTC Desire in my opinion. Have you seen some of the latest app for the Android OS? Pure awesomeness ;)

That's almost like being given a choice between an electric chair or the rope. :p

:mad:Definintely not the N97. :wtf:
BB Bold 9700 - Good functionality and stable.
But also depends on your needs...abundant email and on-device browsing then the BB is great, but there are other options like iPhone 3Gs and HTC Desire.

Because you don't have to root etc and it may be a long wait for Leaf to get around getting the update here (this was why I decided to get from the us, Nexus or not - I'm sick and tired of Leaf). Depending on the exchange rate, its not expensive if you use a re-shipper like myus.com.

I've used both and I was a bit disappointed with SenseUI, I was expecting more. I think the stock android 2.1 is more polished and looks better. And 2.2 blows it out the water. It's just soooo fast and smooth, even with the 3D app draw. There are many other little UI improvements that I think push the stock android ahead of sense UI.

Although I do admire manufacturers trying to personalize their phones with their own software, it takes ages for them to change the code of their software to be compatible with the upgraded OS software.
And since Google just appointed a competent man for the Android User Experience, why do manufacturers STILL want to change the look and feel of the Android OS??? It's brilliant as it is.

Just btw, the Incredible and Evo 4G are both CDMA phones and will not work in South Africa. So dont hold your breath for either of them.
Using a Desire, I think it's awesome despite it's poor battery life (pretty much the only real complaint). Upgrade wise there probably isnt going to be anything interesting announced for another month or two until the next gen iPhone/Android 2.2 phones are announced, and probably a month or two after that before they get here. So if you're happy enough with your current phone to wait anywhere from 4-6 months for the next wave of top-end phones to hit our shores then you could probably do that, otherwise the Desire is pretty damn awesome :D
well from what I have heard and according to the gsmarena review the best new android phone is the samsung i9000 galaxy with a fantastic super amoled screen

My thoughts...
I wanted to get the Nokia N97, but due to hearing of so many issues with it, I decided against it.
Then my next phone would be the N97 mini... I lost interest in this phone 'cos I really wanted the...
N900: This phone seemed great, and like the one I needed. Now a Senior Linux Sysadmin at my work has one, and even he says it's not easy to install packages, etc. You have to package a lot of apps to get them working. The phone is not friendly, especially not to people without Linux knowledge.
I eventually went for the HTC Desire.... Being a HUGE Nokia fan, I never wanted to move away from the well-known Symbian OS. Now I am converted. I will NEVER be able to work on a Nokia again, it just seems too simple... Android is the perfect OS, it does everything, and most of this it does for free. My fiance has very few apps on her iPhone, because she needs to buy a lot of them. Also, the iphone is just too limiting on what I am allowed to do.
I would recommend the HTC Desire and Android for everyone(except my mom)!!!! It is the perfect combination of tech, usability and processing power.

Yo...Give the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 a look...Awesome phone, i've had it for exactly a week now and i'm loving it. I was actively looking for a new phone of about a month and had quite a few options available to me on my Talk 500 contract, including waiting for the new Iphone. But I wanted to try something different and went the Android route and i was not disappointed. I highly recommend this phone. Cheers

Rumor: 2GHz HTC Sabor with Gingerbread Coming at the End of the Year?
by Alex Smith on 1st Jul 2010 - 17 hours ago - 11 Comments
According the Oxford-Zeiss Content & Research Guide, a 2GHz monster is being brewed up by HTC called the “HTC Sabor” and will be headed to Sprint at the end of 2010/early 2011. Yes, I said 2GHz and Sprint. What is to be their competitor to the rumored 2GHz device Motorola is said to deliver by the end of the year. We learned yesterday, in some rumors going around about Android’s Gingerbread, that the Froyo successor will only be going to devices with 1GHz processors and must have a display of 3.5″ and above. What makes the HTC Sabor even more interesting is that it is said to be rocking a display manufactured by HTC, yes I said HTC, to compete with the AMOLED and LCD displays. This will alleviate shortages, as well.
This new display is said to carry resolutions of over 1000 pixels and will meet the requirements of Gingerbread’s 1280×720 screen resolution. Also, the HTC Sabor is rumored to have a 10MP camera, 1080p video recording, and a kickstand.

Now honestly can i ever keep up? MTNSP please make our contracts shorter so we can upgrade when this comes out :D

Except it's on Sprint... So not going to make here. I'm sure there will be a GSM equivalent though, else the Brits will all throw their toys out their cots. 2GHz. Hopefully they manage to make some big improvements on battery life between now and then, else that thing will need charging more often than a laptop (and probably outperform it too :P)

Sony Ericsson X10 is the way to go. Great camera, great sound, don't have the problem of dealing with Leaf. (When I had a problem with my last phone, HTC, I was informed that in most other countries HTC is only under warranty for one year! Therefore the phone is only really built to last you one year... but contracts are always two years here, so they had to extend the warranty)
Also Timescape is a really interesting app for centralising communication. Had my X10 for 2 days now and having lots of fun with it. Awesome things to download via the Android Market.

X10 looked like an option, but the lack of multi-touch put me off. And I am glad I got the Desire. But I love SE phones, and I do hope their Android market share grows bigger, 'cos it will mean that they will compete very healthily with HTC Devices. HTC needs stronger competition, and I hope it will come from SE. I mean, they put on decent memory from the word go on their phones...that is something HTC has not done nearly enough yet. Now we have to wait for Froyo to make up for it.

@Franncoislr: Yeah, I think the main problem with SE is that they have a slower factory to market time frame. HTC seems to be able to come out with the latest versions sooner than what SE can. Take for example the SE Aino. Also a great phone and I love the idea of having a phone keyboard with a touch screen, but when I found out that they hadn't written the software for the touch screen to work while you were using the keyboard I was very disappointed. It was like they only had time to develop a part of the software and couldn't be bothered to give us a finished product.
However I'm still enjoying my X10, I have never felt a need for multi touch, therefore am happy to wait till it's use is better defined and standardised.

Added to that, I am liking the Samsung addition to the Android wars...the more the merrier...the better chance of a better phone:-)
