View Full Version : Got my Desire! Looking for a pouch now...

So Vodacom finally got stock late Friday afternoon, and I went to Vodaworld on Saturday. Got my HTC Desire and loving it, such an awesome phone. Unfortunately they didn't have any of the accessories; namely the Leather pouch, I really want something to protect it while its in my pocket etc. The accessory booklet that comes with Desire box, shows it, found it here: http://www.expansys.co.za/d.aspx?i=199436 .
Just wondering if there's anywhere I could get this(in shop collection) because Vodaworld didn't know when they'll be getting them.

Hi BaronZA. Got my phone on Friday aswell, AWESOME phone. If you do manage to find a proper pouch for it please let me know as I bought a body glove for it that fits very nice, but would like a proper gel skin or leather pouch to protect this beauty. :-)

GEEZ! What are they doing? Sending a Runner to fetch them? :(

I tried these options:

- this type of case: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/21447161/Uni_Gear_Up_TPU_Case_for_HTC_Desire_Black.html - lets dust collect around the sides of the screen (where the rubber casing stops/starts).

- The Zagg is great for protecting your phone, but leaves the phone looking like it's wrapped in plastic - because it *is* wrapped in plastic.

In the end, I've settled on this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320516757272&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT - it's the same basic idea as that Expansys leather one, but it's significantly cheaper, and I got 2 :)

Also, for getting rid of fingerprints, there's nothing better than an ostrich feather duster (a small one).

So the phone is naked when in your hand and in use? mmmm... surely that's when it's at its most susceptible?

Don't you just hate them rubber type covers, I had on on my N95, and everytime i pulled it out of my pocket, it would turn the pocket inside out, god help if my fone rang and i had change in my pockets... LOL :)

Then i remember the full plastic ones from the flea market, you just had to look at them and they would crack and break.

what would really be the best cover/protector for this fone?

Is that rubber or plastic? Sorry for my ignorance, im just sick of the rubber ones being too clunky, and the plastic ones breaking... I am so tempted to just use a normal ziploc bag if i have to :(

My gf just got her one, and there were no accessories in the voda shop either. She ended up using my old HTC Magic leather pouch that came with my phone, as I had upgraded the pouch to a hard rubber/plastic one.

The phone fits in it, and about 2m sticks out the top, so its good enough for now :)

Yes, it's naked... but that's when the experience is at its best. Like most things in life, it's risk vs reward ;)

I spent my money on the phone, and it has to last 2 years. During that 2 years I want to get the most benefit out of it. I'm certain that at the end of 2 years, there will be an even better phone out there.

Has anyone seen them in SA? besides the pakistani's selling the knockoffs in the flea markets? :D

I'm not sure if we are allowed to sell on this site, but I have a spare unused PINKISH/MAUVE TPU Resin Case for the Desire which I can let go for R60 excl postage which will be about R7. It grips the phone well. Has cutouts for earphone, power, camera etc but NOT for the top on/off button and the volume buttons. For these two it is slightly raised and you just push as normal. Also comes with screen protector.

I just got a cool shiny looking cover at HTC shoppe in cedar square. It's a gel cover with reusable washable screen cover. Pretty rugged but still thin enough not to notice its there.

I saw the leather ones some even had aluminium backing, pretty pricey but, I felt they were too bulky and still exposed corners of the fone to damage.

I know i was faced with the same dilemma:

1. Rubber one ~ offered protection, but would yank my pocket inside out everytime the fone rang, god help if i had change in my pocket
2. Leather pocket type ~ Most that i tried were either too tight , difficult to answer or too loose, fall out while you holding empty pocket, the more expensive ones were ridiculously priced. also one end was susceptible to damage, and if i were to be putting my fone back, and someone bumped me, my fone would fall and get hurt.
3. The aluminium lined ones, flip open type, ~ I found were too expensive, and offered very little protection, as the sides were open. too bulky
4. There were funny looking neon orange and pink ones ~ No way they look scary enough to touch LOL
5. Gel cover, found at HTC shop in Cedar square ~ looked decent, in shiny smoked black, thin enough not to make a big difference to the size, but covered so much that there really was protection I stuck with these

Oh yes and apparently there are screen protectors that are washable and replaceable, R80 :D you must get one that you comfortable with, these were my experiences, but at least you know what i went through :)

I got the cover I'm currently using off EBay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180500595367&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

It works perfectly, and I don't see the point of spending more (plus I got 2 for the price of one, and it includes a screen protector).

Edit:
Good grief! I just had a look at what you guys are buying - you're getting ripped off! Save yourselves hundreds and buy off EBay! The super-cheap covers I got look better than those expensive things.

http://shop.lab88.co.za/pL88OL-D64/Desire-Maya-II-Case.aspx

Case is quite lekker, phone fits snug and wont fall out if you tip it upside down. Its got a soft soft leather feel with soft stuff on the inside.
The screen protector is cool, the screen still touches awesomely but it does give the screen a movie grain/matte sort of look, but it is easier to slide you finger on the screen

the expansys seems similar to the proporta one from lab88, i personally didn't like the hard cases, as anything hard breaks on impact, but i could be wrong. also i find the hard ones too bulky, The rubber ones tend to pull your pockets inside out when you answer a call, and god help if you have change in your pockets LOL.

I havent seen the invisishield one, but my guess is it will protect from the odd scratch if its quite thin, but the gel one cushions from nicks and grinds

I am very comfortable with my gel case similar to the expansys :)

I've got a friend who's a fashion designer. She just got a Desire and is thinking of designing a pouch.

What would you guys like to see in a pouch?

Here is my wish list:

- have a front and back - back can be slightly elastic for a tight fit, front has soft interior and some padding (to keep slight pressure on the screen to clean it and provide extra protection)
- Sew in markers (can just be stitching) where the volume rocker up and down is - so you can feel it in the pocket to adjust the volume when listening with earphones)
- Possibly include a pocket on the back for credit card, driver's licence, and cash (wraparound pouch, possibly detachable?). Why carry a phone AND a wallet? I don't use 95% of the stuff in my wallet.

No offence, mate, Nice idea, Kinda like a swiss army knife, a few blades tucked away, ninja star holder, drivers license, etc. I wouldnt need a man bag... maybe even a holster for my glock too, that way it will be my all in one pouch, that can do anything LOL, I really like the concept but previous poster is right, you will lose everything, especially if you have in contact, and they perform a transaction with your credit cards, your cellphone is conveniently located for OTP.

Maybe a moneybag kinda idea would be cool, hidden away under your t-shirt, but then i wanna still be able to play with it all the time.

Seriously though, I tell you what, hows about making a wrist strap kinda pouch, kinda elastic, similar to the one used in the series Chuck, where his father(Orion) had a wrist computer(actually an iphone sewn into a broad elasticated wrist strap). now something like that i can do with... Id even lose my watch for that :)

It might cushion the fall a bit better, but being snug against the fone, it might just prevent impact, but if you compare running a sharp object across the back the soft one will give way first, also i didn't like the way the soft one disintegrated after a while

The Vodacom Outlets are stocking Body-Glove covers for the Desire now, R149. Little bit chunky and it's a mission to unlock the phone until the plastic above the power button softens a little, but it comes with a free screen protector and it definitely feels like it can survive more of a drop (not that I am brave enough to test that theory :P)

I've got the Amzer Gel cover. R188 from Nashua Mobile in fourways mall (apparently the same owners as lab88 aka HTC Shop). Its much better than the body-glove judging on the body glove for another phone. The body-glove was very thin, and didn't seem like it would offer much by way of mechanical protection - i don't think scratches are a primary concern on anything besides the screen.

In summary, pay the 30 odd bucks more for the amzer gel case.

PS: HTC in Cedar didn't have stock. Nashua had purple, lime green, and pink. Ha ha. I had to go for purple.

Mine is pretty thick - I'd say around 2.5mm. The Bodygloves were only available in grey, but that suits me fine.

I Ordered my cover and shield from expansys 2 weeks ago. Got them yesterday.

I ordered the Invisible shield Screen protector for R108.76, and they sent me the Full Body maximum protection which is worth R180 :D
It took me quite a few tries to get the screen protector on the way i want it. Happy with the quality tho i have one little bubble @ the bottom hopefully it will go away. Also i hope it doesn't collect dust around the edges.

I also orded this hard gel case (http://www.expansys.co.za/d.aspx?i=199992) for R50 Definitely worth it. Quality is good and its not bulky I also really like the feel of it as it's smooth and soft on the back. It also doesn't pull your pocket inside out.

After having the phone bare and carrying it around in a drawstring pouch for the last 2 months i feel much much safer with my phone now in a cover and a shield protector.

Have to agree that the screen doesn't look as clear when i put the INVISIBLE SHIELD on (though i did a bad job of putting it on) its not terrible considering its protecting the phone. Though i found it has made no difference to the responsiveness of the phone

Get a screen protector from gadgetshieldz.com. It's the same as the invisible shield and much less ($6.99 postage included). They come from India and I've had one on my Noia 5800 for a year. The side protectors came off after a while, but the the front and back are still strong. They are now looking tacky and need to be replaced but the phone looks as good as new.
I'm going to get a Desire this morning 8-)
