South Africa whipped itself up into a World Cup frenzy on Wednesday as the national side paraded through Johannesburg and the holders Italy touched down, two days before the kick-off.
As the government urged fans to be on their best behaviour for the hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors, South Africans delighted in the prospect that their icon, Nelson Mandela, would be among the crowds at Friday's opener.
The front page of The Sowetan proclaimed the event would now be the "Mandela Show" while a headline in The Star read "Deafening Noise Can't Curb Kick-off Fever", as it described final rehearsals for a World Cup concert on Thursday.

For once when the nation is on such a high do you want to bring it down with a thread like this ??
Because tonight we have to go and lock ourselves in our fortress (homes) again while this nation continue their murdering/raping and robbing.
You cannot bring this nation lower that it is already.

I think some people failed to see the tongue in the cheek :erm:
This thread was a reaction against all those knee-jerk whiners who crap all over us whenever anyone posts anything remotely critical of South Africa or the world cup.
Apparently they also lack a sense of humour  :D
EDIT: And if someone can make a "good news" thread... why can't we have one highlighting some of the more serious and sobering issues surrounding the world cup???

Maby some of us lack humour - but I see nothing funny about your thread. Not saying that your facts arent correct - but damn dude - must suck to have your pessimistic view on life.
I think it is a little more than that. This thread will be spidered by tons of search engines. It will then appear whenever a search is done on the world cup.
This will then stay online until kingdom come...meanwhile other news items will be archived , deleted, changed wheras this will become part of history and stay there.
Many of us depend on events, tourism, IT support etc to make a living and whatever you say and write always come back to haunt you.

What a pity I really couldn't be bothered with these types at the moment... this could have been fun. Fortunately their numbers are so few at the moment that the are not even worth the effort. I'd much rather get caught up in the enthusiasm, patriotism and general feel good vibe of the world cup. I can get back to these poor souls after the world cup, if they are still around. Or maybe I'll be bored enough during it to humour them at some point ;)

Hey I’m all for being in a positive vibe. I am in a positive vibe. Awesome highways, Gautrain, and tomorrow the SWC kicks of. Happy days.
But I can’t help but feel highly embarrassed that the SWC has not even kicked off yet, and we’ve already had tourists/journo’s robbed AT GUN POINT.
So you go ahead and stay on you lsd “I couldn’t be bothered” trip. Just like you I’ll enjoy every moment as well and pray these incidents don’t become daily news. So we’re almost the same… difference is this stuff does bother me while you think it’s all pie in the sky fairytales based on your anecdotal evidence.

Three people have been arrested for robbing three foreign journalists in Magaliesburg, north-west of Johannesburg, police chief General Bheki Cele said on Thursday.
"It is unfortunate that our visitors had to endure such an experience and I hope that the swift reaction of the police will give them the confidence to enjoy the rest of their trip, this wonderful country and the beautiful game," Cele said.

If you are trying to take Cargo to the Airport at O.R.Tambo... just be aware that the access road down the right hand side of the airport has also been closed (for some obscure reason). You have to take the R21 to Pretoria and get off at the Kempton Park exit and double back on the airport access road to drop your cargo at the various airlines offices.
I dunno why business has to be inconvenienced for no good reason at all. Sure close the front of the airport, but why close the Cargo Access road? It is making a huge mess with delivery trucks having to turn around at that point and make their way through the front of the airport (which is also closed) to find their way back to the highway and go all the way around because 1 km of road is closed off for no good reason.

Should turn this to a good news thread, crime on the visitors is fairly low - I'm only aware of two foreign teams being robbed (Colombia, Greece), and there have only been about four armed attacks on Journalists (could be more, though, haven't really been following this).

Twelve juveniles imprisoned outside Pretoria clashed with warders after they embarked on a hunger strike when their demands to have TVs to watch the soccer World Cup opening were apparently not met.
The 12 who went on the hunger strike on Thursday are held at Odi Correctional Centre in Mabopane for various crimes including rape, robbery and theft.
Violence broke out when the convicts barricaded their section A cell with mattresses and threatened to burn down neighbouring cells.
According to prisoners who contacted the Pretoria News after the clashes, warders, armed with batons, charged at the prisoners, beating them over their heads and hands as they clashed with each other.
"It was chaos," said one young inmate.
He said the violence broke out when those in cell 7 became upset after warders did not bring them a TV "as promised".
"After the current TVs broke, prisoners were promised portable ones so that they could watch the opening match. When the TVs did not arrive those in the cell refused to eat breakfast until they received what they were promised.
"The warders became angry and started beating and assaulting the prisoners. Three of them had to be taken to nearby Odi Community Hospital for treatment for their injuries," he said.
Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela, who confirmed allegations that the protest started over concerns about not having TVs to watch the competition, said an internal inquiry would be conducted alongside a police investigation.
"The investigation will establish the facts about a scuffle between offenders and officials at Odi Correctional Centre which resulted in 12 offenders suffering minor bodily injuries.
"Preliminary reports show that officials had to use their batons to stop the offenders, who blocked the entrance to one communal cell with mattresses while threatening to burn down cells.
"The 12 offenders were taken to the prison's hospital section for medical treatment. Three were later sent to a local hospital to ascertain the extent of their injuries," he said.

All YOU GUYS WHO WANT TO POST BAD NEWS SUCK
For a change South Africa is uniting again and the likes of the closet racists and the synical loser brigade couldn't help but bring out the negative aspects.
Why do they do this because? Who knows? Many people are still bitter about a black government and the multiracial society etc etc.
Well guess what those kinds of people are starting to look more and more like dinosaurs. If you are fighting the urge to enjoy the spirit of the world cup ask yourself why you are. Eventually the dinousaurs will either go extinct or go and live in their Jurassic Park where they can eat eachother up together with their ignorant outdated views.
If you can't get over your programming for even a minute then screw you. Nothing is perfect, SA isn't perfect, Fifa isn't perfect the world isn't perfect.
I too was negative and synical about our being ready to do it, but look we did it, the stadiums have been built the World Cup is here.
Its time for South Africans to unite together as one and put aside their differences. Its up to each and every one of us to make a difference by changing our attitude. Viva Jacob Zuma, Viva Sepp Blatter, Viva Madiba!

Not everyone is like you,
people have different standards - some would prefer that the WC funds went into hospitals or roads or police instead of on some circus and bread show (sans the bread). Uniting SA via way of a short term event is unlikely to reap rewards when there is a major rich - poor gap and inefficiency in government and government meddling in everyone's affairs. Agree to disagree but let people have freedom of expression.

You're complaining about people expressing their opinion. That is you are complaining against expression. You are against freedom of expression.
Look I am all for free speech but a line has to be drawn somewhere where people with retarded ideologies aren't allowed to use free speech as a platform to spew their dogma. The very nature of the title of this thread is retarded.
Look at what is cool in the world now and what is being expressed as free speech here is what is making people overseas say our nation is screwed up and divided.
As for health care etc, the government wanted to impose a national health care system, but no the majoritory of the minority of the population went into uproar about it because they would never want to go to a state hospital. The problem is that if all the income had to be channeled from the private to the public hospitals in essence converting the private hospitals into public hospitals then the state hospitals wouldnt be so bad. Like in overseas countries like Australia for example and even some places in South America where the state hospitals are like our private hospitals.
But no people don't want that because in truth they are happy with the divide and exclusivity of private hospitals because it insulates them from having to lay in the same ward with lots of blacks. At least the few blacks in private hospitals are BEE blacks and they ok because they wash and speak with private school accents.
Its these mofos who can't get over their programming and or their silly beliefs which makes them just as archaic as a middle east cleric saying that boobs cause earthquakes.

The vuvuzela's are the real bad news about this world cup.
Vuvzela's mean no chanting and no cheering your team. The rush you get from being in a stadium of people chanting the anthem of your team or player is stolen by one long monotone fart noise.
but its easier to blow into a R10 rand plastic horn than actually chant coherently and support your team is it not? Sad that the soccer hooligans in the uk understand team spirit and all we can come up with is the vuvuzela.

BAD news for the bad news thread! I went through to Cape Town today in a 3rd class (or whatever its called now) carriage, and for some funny reason, i did NOT get mugged, raped nor murdered. How disappointing. Even the Uruguyan fans who jumped in at Pinelands spent the rest of the journey playing their drums and chatting to the local folk (of all colours) and just having a great time. I haven't been into the city for some time, but wow.. the station looks great, the MyCiti busses reminded me of being overseas.. i got a free bus ride from the Civic Centre to the Stadium, and then took a local taxi to Sea Point, where I watched the Bafana game with some friends. After that, walked back to Town, went to the Convention Centre to watch the 2nd match, got dronk, walked to the station and took a train back home. These are all things that should have gotten me at least robbed, possibly murdered according to you sad bunch of revolting cocks :)
Im now also going to leave my front door open for the night, just in case the murdering rapists have followed me home and are still intent on having their way with me!

You see every drink of liquor you take kills a thousand brain cells. Now that doesn't much matter 'cos we got billions more. First the sadness cells die so you smile real big. And then the quiet cells go so you just say everything real loud for no reason at all. That's ok, that's ok because the stupid cells go next, so everything you say is real smart. And finally, come the memory cells. These are tough sons of bitches to kill.
Hope you're ok today. :D

Top SABC executives are set for a bumper World Cup season as they were allocated a total of 277 tickets for top seats at the tournament out of the 2 190 tickets bought for R3.3 million by the cash-strapped corporation.
According to a confidential internal document, SABC chairman Ben Ngubane and group chief executive Solly Mokoetle got 86 tickets each for the tournament - two each for kickoff and the final and six tickets each for a further 14 matches.
SABC board deputy chairwoman Felleng Sekha got 66 tickets - two for the kickoff, a semi-final match in Cape Town and the finals, and six tickets for each of a further 10 games.
The remaining 10 members of the SABC board, however, have to divide their tickets carefully, as the board was given 20 tickets for kickoff and 20 for the final, as well as four tickets for the Brazil vs Cote d'Ivoire match in Johannesburg on June 20.
Tickets were also allocated to 33 journalists, most of them from the SABC or from the print media, who were on the SABC "hospitality guest list".
The other tickets went to television and radio divisions within the SABC, as well as to listener competitions.
Ngubane yesterday said he was only allocated four tickets for each of the matches when the document indicated six.
"I did not ask for these tickets, it was done by the SABC's administration, so they are the right people to ask about it."
He said the tickets were intended for entertaining corporate partners, and he himself would not be going to all the matches.
He would prefer to attend the matches where the SA team, Bafana Bafana, would be playing, and even then he would be accompanied by business partners, he said.
"Whoever got tickets will have to report to the SABC afterwards about how they were used," he said.
Mokoetle yesterday refused to say whether his allocation was correctly indicated on the document.
He also threatened to take legal action should the information be incorrect.
And he demanded to know the source of the information.
Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda last week revealed that the SABC had spent R3.3 million on the World Cup tickets for "stakeholders", something which the DA said could not be justified given the entity's financial status.

Cape Town restaurants were urged not to inflate their prices for the World Cup but some appear to have ignored this and added hefty increases.
The Brass Bell in Kalk Bay is one that has hiked its prices in the past two weeks.
One diner said what left a particularly sour taste was a note on the menu which read: "Please note a discretionary 10 percent service charge will be levied on all tables."
"When the bill came the 10 percent was included under 's/fee' but underneath in large type was written 'Gratuity' and a space to leave an additional tip which I felt was misleading," the diner said.
A waiter told Weekend Argus the new general manager, Jason Veyeren, wanted to turn the Bell into a "five-star establishment".
But Veyeren said they hadn't had a price increase in 18 months and were still fairly priced, compared with other establishments. They had launched a new menu with more South African dishes and "bigger portions".
Veyeren said the 10 percent service fee on all tables had been a test "for a week" which had since been stopped, except for tables of more than six.
The "gratuity" on top of that had been a printing error.
Anna Ridgewell, chef and owner of Café Max in De Waterkant, said some restaurants had already started hiking prices in January.
But she described this as short-sighted. "We should be embracing people coming here in mid-winter," she said.
They would run a "soup kitchen" along the fan walk for the 68 000 soccer supporters on match days.
Crush, a popular lunch-time venue in St George's Mall, has also hiked prices. Several bars in the city centre sharply hiked their prices - including charges for drinks during "happy hour" - on the eve of kick-off.
Chris von Ulmenstein, owner of the Whale Cottage, who runs restaurant reviews on her website, said that but for a few exceptions, restaurants had not put their prices up.
"I think most restaurant owners are coming to the party by offering specials."
She said that Beluga's charge of R1 000 a head for a set dinner menu had raised eyebrows.
Several people tweeted about the amount.
Marketing manager Sam Obery, responded at the time, saying the set menus were aimed at tour operators who had large touring groups who wanted the restaurant to hold the seats for their groups for the entire evening.
"In other words we would not be able to seat those tables at 5,6, or 7pm - until the group arrived - we wouldn't be able to turn those tables, and accommodate the locals.
"Those foreign groups will have that seat kept open for them the entire evening," he wrote.
Obery added that the set menu consisted of five-courses, and included "pâtés and dippers, table salads, palate cleansers, and sorbets and tea and coffee".

um, the only problem here is that we would not be delighting in others misfortunes... but our own (as South Africans)... so I don't see how this applies?
And I don't think it has anything to do with self-esteem either... as many people who post in these threads are simply asking for a realistic look at the country around us and the realities of the crime and difficulties we have to deal with every day as South Africans.
On the contrary... I think the problem is one of "head in the sand" mentality... where you believe if you sing "tra la la la" loug enough you will drown out reality and create nice safe cocoon for yourself to live in.
It is the ultimate phobia... fear of everything... panophobia... and SirLosttheplot has one of the worst cases of it I have ever seen! :D

This is exactly right!
I posted an article before that discussed individuals feeling the need to make themselves feel more superior by posting threads in which they belittle others. They feel superior when they talk down to the phantom "them" that are always referred to. It all stems from very low personal self esteem.
Reading some of the stuff I have here tonight it does seem that some people have some kind of self hate. It's like they want their own country to fail and don't want anything good said about it. I wonder what is the cause of this ? I have a masters degree in psychology and I could certainly come up with some theories about it. But that's about as preachy as I'm going to get because I place little value in the objective abilities of the social scientist. What's worrying is when people are actually smug about their shortcomings rather than geniunly concerned. When their failures define them more than their ability to overcome them. I think some people aren't getting the fact that when they are very harsh about South Africa they are only hurting themselves. Almost like they don't identify as South Africans.
On the other hand I don't suggest anyone be in denial about the reality of this country. It's far from smelling only of roses. But to only harp on about the bad seems a big of the worse side of the coin. Better to be overtly positive than negative if you want to get anything done. I certainly feel I live a perfectly normal life here devoid of much drama. Each to their own I suppose.
Can anyone tell me what possible good this "world cup bad news" thread will do the country ? I'm not suggesting we sweep any bad things that happen under the carpet. I'm just asking what the final goal is of trying to present the world cup as a failure is ? For what purpose ? What will that agenda achieve ?

This leads me to conclude one of three things :
1/ You never listened
2/ You need to get a refund
3/ You are a bull****ter
And as an aside, when I was at university, psychology was the one subject people chose just to get the required credits when they were not keen on the more difficult subjects!

Guilty as charged.

And that is exactly the reason I often take it so personally! When they refer to "them" I take it as meaning me. After all I am South African. Why should I assume that when they refer to "them" they are excluding me.
It really does seem to stem from some people almost feeling like there are two South Africas. One that is inhabited by "them" and one inhabited by "us". They seem to be fighting that unity we should be striving for.

Well, as I already stated twice, this particular thread was a reaction against all the complaints on other threads that people were too negative and were anti-patriotic, etc... just because they posted things that were negative or painted SA in a bad light. As Lancelot and others usually do they run into any thread where somebody posts a news article relating to crime and the world cup and start calling people racist right wingers and complainers and other nice choice words.
So we just exercised our right to freedom of expression and made a thread in which we could post negative articles (that might be considered bad news) while showing at the same time that we can enjoy ourselves and still support South Africa. Most of it is just sarcasm, some of it is reality, and it's all in good fun.

What do you mean am I trolling? I'm not trying to upset anyone. I am upset at the idea that someone felt a feeling of smugness at the potential suffering of a young girl. Thank god she is alright. If it's not you who had this feeling then don't protest too much.

Ag, Rubbish man! I don't know of a single person on this board "who rooted for things to go wrong". Sure some people were skeptical, can you blame them? It's not a crime. That does not mean that they are unpatriotic, right wingers, racist, etc. Get off your stupid high horse and grow up. You sound like a tired old broken record. People have a right to their opinions and view points, but most of the people who post here are also in on the spirit of the game and we are also flying our flags high. We are right there behind our team and our country.
I made this thread to bait people like you... and you fell for it. You are displaying exactly the kind of intolerant attitude I was gunning for. Sucks to be my dummy, doesn't it? :D
Want a noddy badge for this thread?
You start a thread to specifically stir confrontation and lash out when someone takes the bait? Very mature Gary.
IIRC, it was you who said the stadiums are bound to collapse, so yes, you are one of those "who rooted for things to go wrong".
It's people like you who bash anything South African who sound like a broken record - and that's 80% of this forum. So don't lash out if you got what you wanted. ;)

Your presumption that this was the motive of the poster is what is sick. You have no right to make the presumption of his motives. And yes, I do believe you are trolling ... as you have done before under other names here. Keep it up and we start RBPing for the mods to ban this nick as well.

I've already pointed out several times in this thread and others that my comments about things going wrong were tongue in cheek... and more to mock the naysaysers than anyone else. Go back and find the :p smiley everywhere where I made those comments. If you can't figure out what is sarcasm and what is not, that's not my fault.
And as for the rest of my posts... you will find me supporting SA in a multitude of other threads.
All that this thread has succeeded in showing is that the people who can't stomach articles about what is really going on in South Africa and don't want to admit to the crime around us can come in here and act like trolls and make personal attacks on other posters, calling them racist and unpatriotic all the time... and you are one of them.

I gathered that this thread was "tongue in cheek", and I've read some of the funnier articles you've added to this thread to add to the sarcasm, but for you to sit and wait and lash out when someone bites is considered trolling.
Definition of trolling:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_%28Internet%29
a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response
Isn't that what you did in this thread? :D
I've read many of your posts and threads, and I actually find a lot of your stuff very pleasing to read. I especially enjoyed your detailed thread when you went to the States (was it last year?), but Gary, this is quite low.

anyway... I will not be baited into this any further. If you guys are trying to provoke me into an altercation in the hopes of getting this thread closed. It won't work. If that happens I will just go back to posting individual threads of news items. As I said... we reserve our right to freedom of expression... without being labeled ugly names for doing so.
I will withdraw for now. I'm not interested in debating this. I think I have achieved my goal of pointing out that some people on this forum simply cannot tolerate any hint of bad news... and will resort to name calling and innuendo and attacking the posters themselves when they see such "negative" articles being posted.

You admit to baiting people then suddenly you "Won't be baited any further"?
Get a clue guy.
And this forum clearly has no issue with allowing bad news to be posted. You can do it till the cows come home and you will never be stopped. I think all people are asking is what good does it do ? I ask this because I assume when you do stuff you have a purpose. It's the way humans work. Actions have a motive or an agenda. What is it exactly ?

Because you got nasty when it went wrong. Why lash out at people when you know what their response is going to be? It's all good creating a thread through tongue-in-cheek, but don't get nasty if you get the responses you were actually hoping to get.
It's like me creating a thread saying "I love the ANC". We all know what response I'm going to get. If I did it out of sarcasm, and people start swearing at me for loving the ANC, there's no need for me to lash out at them. It's instigating.

A 14-year-old boy who travelled to the country for the World Cup has plunged to his death while hiking down Skeleton Gorge on Table Mountain on Sunday.
The American teenager was hiking with his parents and 10-year-old brother when he fell about 10 metres down the side of the gorge.
Search and rescue officials in Cape Town said the family - who is from Texas - are devastated.
Table Mountain National Park’s Paddy Gordon said they have sent their condolences to the family and will investigate the matter.
“It’s really a big tragedy. We don’t have words to express our heartfelt condolences with the family. Such a young boy having fallen off the mountain is a big tragedy for us too,” he sai

It's no doubt that a hiking accident for a young child is bad, awful, terrible news. I don't think I need to point out the obvious that's it's not related to South Africa in anyway related to us being responsible or crime.

TV crew robbed
Rustenburg - Burglars stole camera equipment worth $70 000 from a New Zealand television crew covering the Soccer World Cup in South Africa, police and the network said on Sunday.
The theft took place at a hotel in northwestern Rustenburg, where the All Whites are due to play Slovakia on Tuesday, when a door was forced open with a jemmy (short crowbar) while the crew was out having dinner, TVNZ said on its website.
The stolen equipment includes a camera, sound and lighting equipment, satellite equipment and laptop worth about $70 000.

Haven't seen any full stadia yet. Some have been pretty crowded but there are always some empty seats. I just imagine how annoyed the folk who had their tickets stuffed up by FIFA and FNB must feel.
Worst referee so far, imho, is the Mexican Dracula wannabe. Soz for the Aussies but that also ruined what might have been a good game albeit inevitable.
