What happened to EDGE in the Lynnwood, Menlo Park Area in Pretoria?

I used to get typical speeds of 230 kbits/s peak and 130 kbits/s sustained.
I have a Nokia 6230 phone with a bluetooth connection to my phone.

The last two or three weeks it is GPRS speed all the time. I ran the Telkom HTTP speed test and got 46 kbits/s !!!

Another thing I have noticed is that no Cellphone Tower information is displayed on my phone even though it is set up to display it.

Any reason for these problems MTNbb ????

Supposedly I do not have EDGE or MTN 3G where I live (Hout Bay, Voda 3G available, hint hint MTN), so took the opportunity to test EDGE whilst stuck at the airport yesterday (Durban). Netmon said it was an EDGE enabled tower, I was getting 4 channels, and maximum speed on the Telkom speed test was 79 kilobits per second. So I suspect I was getting GPRS+ and not EDGE.

So my question - is it possible that netmonitor would say it was an EDGE tower, but that EDGE is not available on that tower?

An observation in terms of coverage - I took the trouble to wait for an EDGE/3G enabled phone, but at current MTN coverage of these technologies: not available where I live, not available where I work unless I manually select different towers (Observatory, Cape Town), and when travelling, was available but non-functional at the airport, was not avalable at my destination (Umbilo, Durban) and was not available where I was staying (Hillcrest). Great business solution :).

No. If Netmon says its Edge enabled (EGPRS), then it is. But please remember the following : you are not always going to get all 4 timeslots for downloads (it is a aggregated service), and you are not always going to get MCS9 Coding Scheme (signal strength, distance etc may lead to you being switched down to a lower speed coding scheme).

Hi,

I am happy to report that EDGE is working again in the Lynnwood area in Pretoria.

I want to thank MTNBroadband for sorting this out.

My experience is that MTNbb goes out of his way helping MTN customers on this forum.

Thank you very much !!!!

:)
