Oh damn !
I was hoping they were going to call it Windows 05 or something equally catchy.
Seriously though, that is a **** name, absolutely crappola, lame, pathetic, wussy and watered down - hmmm, pretty much like the product is going to be.
Hey, I've got a new catchy name !
Windows-wecopiedeverythingfromappleandremovedhalfthepromis edfeaturesXP2
Heck man, they could've at least followed copying Apple to it's inevitable conclusion with their use of animal names :-
Windows Parrot
Loverly !

We think we cracked the dumb reason here (yes this should have involved beer). Vista as in a view. Now you got Windows Vista = windows with a view....which is a cheap lame point to the transparent effects in it that let you see through the windows

oh yes - transparent windows !
Nifty idea, wonder where they got that idea from ?
How transparent of them !
:D
Very very sad of microsoft - the biggest thing they can tout about their new OS is transparent windows - everything else has been thrown out and instead we listen to Hype and yet more Hype, served up with dollops of FUD about the competition.
Well, it looks like "Windows Vista" is going to turn into a rather dismal view for microsoft, because people are not even slightly excited about it and industry analysts are already pulling it to pieces due to it's lack luster feature set.
It's basically Windows XP2

Oh bloodie hell. What ever. More money too spend as all the other MS products carefully require the new vista features ...

Really lame name. Sounds like some obscure Office product.

Well that will be pointless because they won't allow updates/fixes on cracked versions of Windows Vista...
And we all know how buggy Windows is when it first arrives on the scene..

I think they should have just stuck with the name Longhorn .... Vista does not sound that good. anyways .... not like it has anything worth mentioning. I wonder how come it takes them over 3 years to create transparent windows? Have they heard of themes ;)

They should have chosen a cooler name like Windows Avalon. Instead we get this miff name. Oh well.
Despite all the silly remarks about hating windows, I personaly can not wait for the beta copy in august to see what its capable of.
When windows 3, windows95 and XP came out, they were really cool launches, because your desktop just got so much better. I hope this is a big jump.

Mac OS X rocks. I love it. I own a very outdated Powerbook G4 running Mac OS X 10.3, but I still love using it. Apple may have stolen the mouse (along with MS) but MS stole practically everything from Apple, and continue to do so. Just check out this new hellspawn of theirs, many of the features resemble Mac OS X Tiger.

How outdated? Have you tried 10.4 yet?Nope, I stupidly bought a modem that isn't compatible with my powerbook. I want to download Tiger on my PC, but since I only have a 3GB cap at the moment I didn't want to do it. Next month I have 30GB though, yey, so I'll probably download it then.
It's a 500mhz with 384MB RAM.

Vista is a bit lame, perhaps there's a chance MS will change it before shipping.

How can you compare it to Tiger? Do you have the final version running on your PC? Until they reach RC status nobody can make a valid judgement.

The public at large are going to reject this out of sheer dis-interest.
The ONLY reason it will gain acceptance eventually, is through new PC sales and given the fact that new PC sales have been in a slump for quite a few years, it's going to be a slow uptake.
Who in their right mind is going to spend R3000 on windows VISTA when they don't need it ?
When you can get an entire new desktop system with windows XP for the same price ?
Very few people.
And you can bet your bottom dollar that some bright spark software company will come out with an "add on" for windows XP that does exactly what the Avalon desktop does.
If they would've included what was promised from the start - things like WinFS - then maybe it would've been worth it.
I think Microsoft are going to come undone with this one - victims of their own success with an over saturated dis-interested market.

I heard a rumour that Avalon might be included in SP3 for XP, if there ever is a SP3. No idea if there's substance to that, but it makes you wonder...

Until they reach RC status nobody can make a valid judgement.Well let's just say that Microsoft hasn't exactly done anything spectacular so far, and that all their OS's have been pretty much predictable and that the feature set of most of their previous OS's could be guessed based on the versions of Mac OS out at the time. My opinion anyway.

But why do they keep dropping features? It seems that Mac always gets there first ...
I am so disinterested in Windoze lately that I only decided to read this thread now, and what a disappointment it was to find that M$' next 'revolutionary' version is going to be called "vista... (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=vista)"
If this is the amount of thought that M$ have put into their new product's name, then I can only imagine how little the effort was that went into the design & coding of the product itself......only gives me more of a reason to forge ahead with Linux...
The dropping of features thing is usually due to shareholder and market pressure. In my own naive estimation, M$ have lost any kind of innovative and quality ethics that they've had in the past - this has been sidelined by the bean-counters and legal beagles. Not unusual in a company that's grown fast in a short space of time. At the end of the day, expect everything to go poof!

I wonder if this could open the market a bit for Linux and Mac OS to take a bigger share? The fact is not many people seem excited about this OS (not here or elsewhere), and the fact that you won't be able to update it if you don't have a legit version might make less people switch. Hell, I know many people who have never had a legit version of Windows in their lives. I think people like that make up a giant percentage of the Windows market share.

It's debatable whether they have been innovative regarding products, but it's definately true that their marketing has been innovative.
That's essentially what Microsoft are touted as being best at, for obvious reasons.
Gates and Balmer are gurus at marketing, although their style is starting to flag because it does help to have at least an inkling of innovation in the product your are selling, even if it's just copying everyone else.
If you go through the history of "innovation" at microsoft, you'll find it's mainly all about buying an idea or product (and the whole company behind it) and marketing it far better than the original creators would.
Eventually, the name microsoft just markets itself until people get bored and re-invention occurs.
Which is why Apple are doing so well - Steve Jobs came back and helped re-invent the brand and although he's just as much a marketing fundi as Gates and Balmer, he is backed by vision and true innovation - or at least a sense of style ;)
Hmm... Microsoft Vista... sounds like a cheap German pr0no :D Longhorn sounds better, but it douesn't sound too professional (IMHO!!) Microsoft '05 would've sucked I think.. would make people think it was the first model (05,95,98.... keeping up here?). Wonder if people would buy it if it was called Microsoft Tfosorcim  Btw, anyone kno what XP stands for? Or did they just choose it cause it sounded cool? :p

It reminds me more of Cuba and music.

The day I have to pay for an MS OS is the day I switch over to Mac.
It's debatable whether they have been innovative regarding products, but it's definately true that their marketing has been innovative.
um... sorry, yeah I was actually referring to product innovation and quality, given that the thread subject concerns their Wind00s product. No doubt, they're excellent marketers, together with all the shady behaviour that goes along with it...
Couldn't agree more. I wonder if this could open the market a bit for Linux and Mac OS to take a bigger share?
It's happening already - most noticeably in Europe, though maybe becuase that's where most of the publicity is focussed. Some countries not seen as '1st-world' have actually been using alternatives to M$ for years now...

And we all know how buggy Windows is when it first arrives on the scene..
Well all that is needed is a corporate edition which does not require activation and some keys
And you can bet your bottom dollar that some bright spark software company will come out with an "add on" for windows XP that does exactly what the Avalon desktop does.
Um...you can already download the avalon preview for XP from Microsoft (here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c8f904e1-b4ca-402b-accf-aaa2bd60da74&DisplayLang=en)). MS has confirmed that the final will be back ported to XP as well.
If they would've included what was promised from the start - things like WinFS - then maybe it would've been worth it.
WinFS is still under development, just didn't make the cut to included at launch because they were lagging behind with development. Should be out in late 2006 or 2007 as an add on.
anyone kno what XP stands for? Or did they just choose it cause it sounded cool? :p
Originally I heard it stood for XML Protocol...but the marketing all had it as Expierence....wonder if the first was just wrong or the marketing guys decided to change it. Well give it 5 to 7 years and the MS bloggers (if there is such things in 5 to 7 years) will likely tell the secret "real" meaning.
