View Full Version : Is this some marketing ploy? HTC Desire vs. Xperia X10

I was due for an upgrade recently and I wanted a top phone. After a week of extensive research the HTC Desire came tops because it was an awesome phone and I could afford.
I went to my provider, Vodacom, and told them I wanted the HTC Desire (OH ya there was a big poster advertising the new Sony Ericssons; X10, Vivaz, Satio, etc), the saleman who attended to me advised me to go for the X10 because, I quote, "the HTC Desire has nothing on the X10" (I've been to three shops and two of them have said that). Are they just trying to push sales for the X10 or what? because online, the Desire is far superior.

OH and im being biased :o)
but seriously, desire is the shizznizz and it has android v2.1 (2.2 upgrade coming soon from leaf).
as far as i know x10 only has Android v2.0, but that might change.

Please tell the salesman that he's an idiot.
With the X10 you'll be stuck on an outdated version of Android forever and no multi-touch.
Dups!
03-07-2010, 07:10 PM
The Desire comes has Android 2.1 and multitouch over the X10.
The X10 has a better camera, better music player (music quality & layout), bigger screen and better signal reception.
Sense (HTC) and UX (SE) aren't that different to each other.
There, you make a decision.

Good post Dups!. Pity the salesmen are useless and can't explain things like that.
If only the X10 would have multi-touch and not be stuck on an old version of Android it would be so awesome. Sony Ericsson could at least put in the effort to update the firmware.

Most likely. Vodacom probably ordered a crap ton of X10's then the Desire arrived after they placed the order and everyone wants one of those. Now they have stock gathering dust which they need to push through. Just a hypothesis.

The X10 actually runs Android 1.6 with an update to 2.1 due to arrive in Aug-Sept... Hd video recording will be enabled according to various news articles on the web. I have never seen the Desire, so I can not comment on that but my brother has the x10 and its pretty damn sweet:
Awesome camera
Huge screen (divx movies look sweet)
Feels very comfy to hold (vs iphone)

Xperia 10 < HTC Desire simple as that
The Desire looks to be a little bit cheaper over seas too, by about 20$ :erm:

Oh yes. The salesman also said HTC South Africa was bankrupt. HTC SA or Leaf isn't bankrupt, the guy blatantly lied to sell me a phone.

You'd be nuts to take the X10 over the Desire (for those of you looking at these two phone. I personally have a Desire, and my step-father has an X10. The X10 is miles behind the desire, in just about every aspect except for the camera.

The X10 is cool, just lack of multi-touch. And keep in mind it's the first SE with Android. I am sure they will get it right, but HTC is a little more experienced in Android atm. I would not get a SE now, but let's talk again in 2 years...I hope they have upped their game by then...will definately consider it then...for now, I love my desire:-)

A friend went to vodacom to get the Desire and the salesperson also tried with determination to get her to take the X10. She had to pretty much eventually tell the salesperson to shutup and give her the Desire.
It's a bit shameful that Vodacom try to push an inferior product (Android 1.6 is a bit shocking for a new phone - also the Desire AMOLED screen is fantastic). What happened to looking out for the customer?

I had a guy in a vodacom shop (Northgate) demoing the X10 unit, asked him how this fone compared to the desire, he told me bluntly its much better, showed me that it needed a pattern to unlock it, x10 has three homescreens, 1Ghz processor with 384 RAM, 8 MP camera, Android 2.0, alot bigger, etc. I was like wow impressive dude
whipped out my desire, and said also got a 1 Ghz snapdragon processor, 576 MB RAM, 5 MP camera, with HD recording comming when the Andriod 2.1 currently on the fone gets updated to 2.2, seven home screens, and also has a pattern to unlock it... so what makes it better besides being bigger? all he could say was what are you going to do with seven home screens LOL :D

What?! My 7 Home screens are too few!!!! I can find much more to put on if it were more!?! Did you ask him about multi-touch? You should have! I think I should go to a few Vodashops just for the kicks to see them try tell me it's better...8mp camera?! Um, how about a real camera if I wanna take pics. I use my phone for work things and quick capturing of info...Sigh! If we can keep as many as possible people from not getting the X10, soon they will give them on cheap ass contracts....Then I will consider getting one...let's drive down the prices:-)

Maybe they have some kind of internal Vodacom thing going...sell a lot of x10's and get XYZ, or cash or something...seems like it...everyone seems to be in on it...so what else could it be?

When I orderd my Desire I talked to the big boss lady of the main East London shop and she said the sales staff are getting crazy commission for selling X10s.

LOL i forgot to mention i did, when i showed him the 3D gallery app, and browser, and he said whats multi touch, how often are you going to use it LOL, :D
BTW Sony are known for doing things like this, even the 3D screens they selling in Sandton Square, what they dont tell you is you get 2 pairs glasses, with the TV, each additional pair is R1000 and up, There is ne real standards for 3D tv, and next year phillips is releasing one without the need for glasses. So get as many people to sell your crappy product for you, get your name to flood the market, and create hype about your product bieng better...
wait didn't I Phone do that too?

Happy X10 user here :) I chose it over the Desire with no hesitation. Main reason was design and the fact that X10 will be getting Android2.1 very soon, with 2.1 the X10 will get HD 720p video with Continuous Focus like the Vivaz and NOKIA N8 have. X10 also has a larger battery (1500mAh) and with the latest firmwares lasts very long, the larger display with slightly higher res (800x480 vs 854x480 in X10), better audio quality with a much better mediaplayer (MediaScape) and also the better camera. Haven't really found the lack of Multi-touch a big deal if at all realy. I can zoom in to images without having to use two hands, just simply double tap or use the zoom in/zoom out keys which I find much better, also in the web browser just double tap, nice and simple, never liked pinch to zoom even when using the iphone3gs. If multi touch is a big deal to you though then get the Desire, I don't think the difference in RAM will be a big deal, doubt you'll run into any RAM problems lol. Both have a 1Ghz Snapdragon. If I'm not mistaken the X10 has 512mb RAM in total with 128mb reserved for graphics/video acceleration, that's why it says 384mb RAM.

Well from a salesmen's POV, you probably find he's got cash incentives for pushing the lesser phone, thus the reason he was trying to punt the X10 on you.

Touche, what does 2.2 bring though? The X10 is getting HD video in 2.1 and I think the ability to install apps in SD, correct me if I'm wrong about the last one.

2.2 Froyo is what you looking for, its like mixing NOS with Roids and feeding that to your fone

Installing Apps to SD is a feature of android 2.2. Unless SE implements it themselves (haven't seen anything along those lines), the X10 will not have it. 2.2 brings HD video out the box, the ability to use your phone as a wireless hotspot and a huge speed boost from the JIT compiler. Plus one or two other small but useful APIs, such as the ability to push what you are browsing on your pc to your phone. So the Desire on 2.2 will likely outperform the X10 on 2.1.

cough cough, 2.2 blows 2.1 out the water. My Nexus came with 2.1, now I've got the 2.2 upgrade - chalk and cheese. Apart from the MASSIVE speed boost, there are a lot of UI tweaks and extra features like apps2SD, Flash, keyboard enhancements, new homescreen UI, HD video, native tethering, native wifi hotspot, gallery enhancements etc.
2.1 is a big improvement over 1.6 and 2.0, but 2.2 is fantastic. The X10's old OS version is a dealbreaker IMO.

Sounds realy good :) thanx alt, duncan and Trinity. I'm sure X10 will get 2.2 eventually, with the R1BA020 X10 FW apparently its faster than the Desire, waiting for that update to be available here now. I'm still happy with my choice just love the look and feel of this thing.
