Are you using Wifi or the mobile data (edge/3g/ect.)?

Using my wifi
I have had the same problem with wifi, had different ROMs on and everything, it never starts the download when Im on wifi... only on mobile data.
PS: It could just be my work wifi thats blocking some port or something, haven't bothered to check.

Go to settings->apps-> market and clear data/cache. Restart the phone. That might help :)

Mobile data works fine, took a little long to start when I got the phone, but now its fine. Wifi does not work at all for me (for the market).

This is a long shot, but maybe taking off the security off the wi-fi, wonder if that will help? At home I have no security on my Wi-Fi(and an antenna that is hanging on for dear life, so forget it, you would have to come sit on my stoep to be able to steal data;-) and it works perfectly. But then again, at a few of our clients I have connected to their secure network, and Market downloads work perfectly. MTN works okay, but I never use my phone data...too expensive!

I had a similar problem on my wife's Magic after I did the Hero upgrade - wifi didn't actually download for any apps even though wifi was connected. Only mobile data worked. This was true for all apps, not just the market.
I fixed by by going to Settings->Wifi->Mobile Networks (The settings menu may be a bit different, but look for the APN settings) and adding a new APN with the same settings as the data one you have there (ie, duplicate it). Then delete the original and restart. After you've restarted it should work on wifi.
Basically you're deleting the original APN and then recreating it.

I have found my problem, the work wifi is too secure for the Market downloads apparently, set up my wireless at home, and its downloading great on wifi!
i have same problem and also thought it was security but if i start a download over gprs then switch off mobile data and re-enable wifi the download will continue ... ???
apparently its very common... http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=57b5e3efa7477b50&hl=en&start=1000

I saw all the problems when I first had this as well, I don't know if they changed or updated something, but mine is flying on either 3G or Wifi for the last couple of weeks.
