well.. my fnb debit card does have exp date and 3 numbers.
it's a smart account and has a visa electron logo.
anyway, i think you should have at least cheque debit card backed by either VISA or MASTER.

HFGP,

The Maestro cards are purely debit cards, for which you need a pin to access the account, hence places like Paypal won't accept it (like at tollgates in SA).

I assume? you are at the Blue bank? You will be able to use your Cheque card on Paypal, as it is backed by VISA, and no pin is required.

you cannot use debit card on paypal only credit cards

i dont think you can use your debit card on any online buying of things overseas

You need to make the distinction between the Electron card and the Visa / Mastercard Cheque card.

An electron card is purely for off-line use - you cannot use it online.

A cheque card has the raised numbers on the front, cvc etc. ( exactly the same as a credit card ) and you can transact online with it

Both Electron & Cheque cards are debit cards in that you can only spend as much cash as you have in the account ... you do not have any credit with the bank ...

cheque account does. it's called overdraft facility. you have to apply for it after opening your account.
they usually approve about R1000 if you earn R6000 pm. (according to the article from Personal Finance)

No you can't, because a debit card requires a pin to access the account.

Cheque cards are forms of debit cards ... also backed by a Credit house like Visa or Mastercard. So instead of having a 'Credit' line like with a Credit Card, it uses an existing account, like a cheque account, but with the added benefit of using it as a Credit Card because of the Visa/Mastercard backing.

it says IF they have VISA or MASTER logo.
unlike FNB and other banks, absa doesn't provide VISA/MASTER cheque cards.
if you ask absa for it, they will prolly say get a credit card...
