Motorola Milestone.

But it's dated compared to the full touchscreen HTC Desire and (almost in SA) Samsung Galaxy S.

Agreed. I have an HTC Dream and it's pretty cool, but it's definitely dated. The Milestone, by all accounts, is a great device all round. You might want to wait around and see what gets released. There have been rumours of HTC releasing another Android with a hardware keyboard as well as some nice rumours with photos of the Motorola Droid 2 (the follow-up of the Droid/Milestone)

I also have the HTC Dream and yes, it is a bit dated. But, I will soon be running Froyo on it :D

Droid 2 whenever it comes out. The Droid (=Milestone) is ancient now, 8 whole months after it's release. -> check this graph (http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/droidx_071910234059/23788.png). Ouch.

The problem with the Droid (Milestone) is that the keyboard is pretty bad. It's really not a great keyboard. And this isn't just my opinion, this is the general consensus (which excludes, of course, the biased Droid owners that are in denial :P )

Get an android phone with Swype, you will never want a physical keyboard again - HTC Desire with Swype

Meh, swype is an acquired taste. I gave it a shot but I never liked it.

Have you guys given Swiftkey a shot? Its text prediction is borderline unbelievable. In fact, in the hour or so that I spent using it, I did 259 keystrokes LESS than what I would normally do, which made my text entry 34% more efficient. It's really something to be experienced :)

HTC Dream FTW. 2.1 going and is pretty stable.

What about the Samsung Epic 4G (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_epic_4g-3410.php), AFAIK it's based on the Samsung Galaxy S so it should a very decent handset.

The Epic 4G is a WiMax phone (hence the '4G'). It's what the US Sprint network gets instead of the Galaxy S that the rest have. But maybe we'll get a GSM version some time.

Can I ask why you need a qwerty keyboard? Since changing over to Swype I've found myself preferring to use it over my Blackberry.
