View Full Version : Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for Desire - what is an "unlocked" handset?

cueball

OK so the news is all over the web that the official HTC release of Android 2.2 (Froyo) will start rolling out this weekend for the Desire. The fine print says its for "unlocked" handsets and operator specific versions will take longer. My handset doesn't seem the have any MTN-specific apps or branding, does this make it "unlocked"?

As far as I know all handsets sold locally in SA are unlocked by law

Been listening to a podcast called TWIG (This Week In Google), and they talked about how in America certain phones would be exclusive to certain carriers (iPhone specifically) but in other countries they outlaw it. Glad it's like that here. The Americans are suffering because of it, especially the fanboys...

My Desire is on Vodacom, and it has no branding visible, and absolutely nothing vodacom related on it, not even the stupid pictures they usually load, maybe mine is also a normal one?

'Locked" means that if you put a sim card from a different carrier than the one you bought the phone from, it will not work. I think network locked phones are illegal here, or at least very frowned up. Essentially if your phone came with the vanilla Desire ROM, the upgrade will reach you quicker than if the network operator still wants to load a whole bunch of their own software onto it. This is more of an issue in the UK/States than here, since we still have to wait for leaf to approve the upgrade and pass it onto vodacom/MTN for approval.

Ja, it's been like that for years, in both countries.
Look, the iPhone still only has VC as it's official carrier, but it's fully unlocked - any sim can be used on them, with in SA or beyond.

Ooh do tell when done :D
Was that an "Over the air" update that just sprung up? Or from your local service provider?

Quick!!! Check for updates. Mine is busy downloading as I type this. (OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip)
Wow. Thought we would have to wait months still.

According to the posts flying around on XDA Developers

RUNNING THE OTA WILL LOSE YOU YOUR ROOT

There's currently no way to root with the new bootloader included in the OTA update. I'm sure there will be within a week, but just be aware...

Looking at the Desire thread, there's meant to be a 2 week/month (I forget) waiting period.

I've read the "it cannot be rooted" warnings, but I've only had my phone for 2 weeks and not bothered rooting it yet. I reckon by the time I want to root it the good people at xda-developers.com will have figured it out already. They always do.

I am almost too afraid of the official version after running rooted! Could someone who has done the upgrade download an app called Linpack and report back what score you get? Push the Run Benchmark button a few times and tell us what the best score is. My highest so far has been just over 40 on LeeDroid 1.6.

Happened to me yesterday - just mentioned it in the other thread.

Do a factory reset: Turn off your phone, press volume down and then presss power (while holding volume down).

You will get an Android menu. Select factory reset with volume down key and then press power.

Luckily you can just sync back all your contacts/calendars through Google and Facebook, but you will have to tweak all the settings to your preference and re-install all your apps. Everything on your SD card will still be intact though

A lot of the apps have very subtle visual tweaks, the talk and gmail apps being the most noticeable. But for all intends and purposes you have the exact same experience, just with one or two new features and a significant speed boost. Battery also seems to be a bit better.

Frankly I'm rather underwhelmed by froyo.
Speed wise I can't really notice a difference because the phone never really slowed down anyway.
Wifi seems exactly the same. Seemed slightly better while taking a dump at work but slightly worse while taking a dump at home.
The news and weather app is cool because of the weather graph thing. The news looks a bit more full featured but I don't use RSS much anyway. It now seems stupid having 2 weather and news apps/widgets.
Flashlights 3 settings are nice but needs a widget like LED Light.
720p nice but let's face it, the camera on this phone is shocking anyway so you just get a higher res ****ty video.
Voice search seems about as useless as goggles.
Wifi hotspot might actually come in handy for me but not yet.
Best feature so far is coloured tags in gmail. :)

1. Did your phone also have the Vodacom scene and vodafone bookmarks before applying these updates?

3. Working fine now, but did have an issue after the update. Sense went into a crash loop (Force Close over and over again). Just did a hard reset and it fixed everything.

I recommend backing up what you can before you start. The built in HTC Backup didn't restore properly after I ran the RUU.

- I used Astro to backup my apps. (Google should do it, but this way you don't have to re-download) - http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.metago.astro
- For SMS - http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
- Used HTC Sync for contacts and calendars
- The rest I had to re-setup (Exchange settings, GMail, Wallpaers, Ringtones)
- Also check your various apps, some allow you to backup their own settings

Hi lureon - I also had the HTC Sense crash loop, but just did not want to do a hard reset, otherwise I would have lost my Swype library, which is a pain to start from scratch :-(

I did not do ANY BACKUPS WHATSOEVER before updating - first from 1.15 to 1.21. then to Froyo. BUT it IS always a good idea to perform full backups - I was just lazy this time, so always rather do the sensible thing as lureon suggests and do backups!!!

For anybody else that might run across this problem(HTC Sense Force Close loop), here are some pointers:

1. - One option is to press the "search" button on the Desire when you click the Force Close notification button. Some say keep it in some say press it multiple times. When you can open the search function, search for "Settings". If you can then get to the phone's settings, clear the Cache and Database for HTC Sense under the "manage Applications" options. Anyway, this method did not work for me, as the search function always wanted to either search for People or Gmail :-(
2. - Option 2, I sent myself an e-mail with a URL that I clicked on in my Gmail. This then starts up your default browser. So now you can browse. I then installed an app from AppBrain called something like "Behold II Quick Settings" or something to that effect. i first had to create an AppBrain account and waht-not. A bit of a schlep, but what can you do :-). The trick now, install this app - the notification will appear in the top notification bar - now expand the notification bar and click on the notification that the app was installed. this will start the app! :-) Now just go to Manage Applications and clear the Cache(my clear cache button was greyed out) and the Database (I could only clear this). now all should be fine! I think I did a normal power down and power up again, not sure. Do it if required - not a hard reset though! Just a power off and power on.

Now all your apps and everything is still in tact - only thing is that your short cuts and background would now be default, so just add back your short cut icons like they were before.

Hope somebody found this useful :-)

@balrog

Wish I'd known that sooner :) Although, I had nothing to lose anyway because the RUU effectively did a factory reset before I applied the FroYo update.

@lureon - well, you did the right thing by backing up before diving in:-)

Thanks to much to everyone for their help, I'm now running FroYo.

Any problems with your video camera afterwards?

I updated my firmware with the exe based ROM. This one in particular... RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe

Did the Froyo update (manual) straight afterwards, but can't do video recording anymore. I go into my camera, select videorecording and the phone goes straigt back to the home screen.

Any ideas anyone?
