View Full Version : South African WISP Association Anyone?
Hi there all SA WISPs
After sensing support for the establishment of a SA WISP association, I thought of placing this new thread for all the interested.
The forseen benefits of a SA WISP Association as discussed till now by forum members are but not limited to:
1. Grouping of efforts to negotiate for WISP rights with ICASA, ITU, etc
2. Pooling of feed requirements in order to buy bandwidth in bulk, say a 2Mbps or more dedicated feed distributed among all WISPs through ex. VPNs, thus reduce overal feed cost
3. Setting standards for WISPs including legality and responsible utilization of wireless networks and equipment
4. Protecting the WISP customer interests from abuse of monopolies i.e. setting accepatable pricing and service standards
5. Attaining more recognition as a unified body
6. Sharing knowldge of equipment and technical achievements
7. Pool procurment needs to get better prices from suppliers
and much more.....
Accordingly, I suggest to run the whole association web based to minimize costs. We can arrange a forum, and maybe we can ask MYADSL to host it.
WISPA.org.za has been suggested as a domain to be used. We can check it out, and any others.
All in all, let us discuss this and see if there is major wisp support on the issue in order to carry on.

happy to be involved
this idea has been doing the rounds for a while and it seems like a very good time to get something going
Great, I am in!
Thx Everyone,
Our legal advisor says we have to register the association to be legal.
Will work on the website and domain name.
Nevertheless, the association should have a peaceful and logical approach, so what do you think?
Negotiation is the key, not "telscum" hehe though sounds cute :D
Please forward all ideas and suggestions in order to discuss and impliment.
Best of luck

I'm not sure what the advantages (If any) are.
But neways. Me wif u okes. Tired of paying others for what should by rights be free.
The air belongs to the people, not to corporations.

registration of association...
much better that way - simply has to be a voluntary association not for gain or can be more complex
also has to be registration with the DoC as an Industry Representative Body under the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act....most important thing in that regard is a code of conduct
Friends of mine might have a chance for a meeting with Telkom regarding WISPs. Wanna try and negotiate possibility of granting permissions for WISPs and in return work on a shared profit basis with Telkom. Any suggestions?
I would like to see a proper analysis of our situation under the law. The bigger your investment becomes the more clarity you want!
I am also tired of every second guy going at Telkom. We need to get a solution that works for all parties. We can fil a gap in the market that Telkom can't without much bigger investment.
I will talk to more guys operating as wisps to get involved.

Hi guys. You can definitley count me in however do you think its only going to get worse with the introduction of the SNO , who apparent will be seeking wiress implementation as part of their strategy for last mile access and to bridge the gap with Telkom?
Telkom's November implementation of the bandwidth capping would also influence and hinder WISP developement.Maybe I'm wrong but until the pending court cases against the "Big players" is resolved I cant see much this Association would be able to do other than back these guys even though I whish this was not the case. Please correct me if Im wrong in assuming the above.
Well, I hope I'm wrong!!! Nywayz count me in

I think that if there is enough people standing together and make loud enough noises, someone, somewhere will eventually listen. WRT bandwidth, there is more than one way to kill a cat.

Hi there all SA WISPs
After sensing support for the establishment of a SA WISP association, I thought of placing this new thread for all the interested.
Has there been any progress in establishing a SA WISP association ?
I was wondering how you would go about registering a WISP association with the DoC as an Industry Representative Body if the law currently prohibits you from providing the service? How would the “code of conduct” address the legal issues?

I know i dnt have the technical skills to become an ISP but we ganna try anyway and get a WLAN going and share an internet con. I will pay for the con and then cover my costs by charging em R100 or so,, hence WISP

I heard somewhere over here that if your signal crosses the road it is illegal but that it is ok to share with next door neighbour?
correct me if i am wrong.
This brings another point to mind ... wh@ about the wisp's such as uninet, 24-7online, wo, etc ... are they legal?
