View Full Version : Telkom 21 Mbps network
From this article: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadband/14276-Telkoms-Mbps-HSPA-plans.html
Good news is that Telkom is indeed investing in an HSPA+ network. Telkom said that all sites in the network that Telkom Mobile is currently deploying are HSPA+ capable.
So when will we be able to use the service?

Why is everything going mobile? - surely ADSL should have better speeds and be more stable, as well as lower latency etc...
Telkom piggybacks off MTN at many locations...

cable theft for one--and giving me a connection for starters--telkom is not going to give an adsl line because their exchange is not offering new applicants adsl--this is the new excuse from telkom; i guess they are 'forcing' the mobile wireless onto new users.

Aha, the plot thickens ... I'm also hearing the 'no more ADSL infrastructure provisioned' story, as are a lot of people, and I've been wondering why Telkom doesn't seem too interested in expanding their ADSL footprint, and I think you've hit the nail on the head --- it's because they want to enter the mobile data market instead. It makes sense. Mobile data is charged at a ludicrous premium in our market --- easily 10 times the price of DSL data --- so instead of competition bringing mobile data prices down, Telkom are basically going to idle on growing the DSL user base and enter the mobile data market where they can charge much higher rates for data. Since we won't see LLU anytime soon, nobody else can step in to the DSL market, and Telkom will soon be just another member of the price-fxed cartel for mobile Internet.
That also answers my question as to whether or not they're going to upgrade my exchange anytime soon - obviously they will not.

This explains why WISPs are still popular and why I still see ISPs investing in Wireless Backbones expecially now testing the 802.11n systems.

WISP--guys are really pushing to get all of us who have not got telkom's ADSL. But their pricing and speeds are not attractive--it seems their contention ratios are also very high. I have not tested it myself but heard from others who have used it.

I thought Telkom's 3G service was meant to launch in August (this year)???

They have already launched 3G more than a year ago, we are actually talking about their 21 Mbps network.
Maybe you were thinking about Cell C.

Thou the service is on a month-to-month / contract with the "house phone style" modem, just a hand few of pre-paid people. The network isit that all user friendly at the moment in terms of full scale mobile network functions. I can give you a list of "to-do's" these guys are working on

Have a look at the modems at this link (http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/w-cdma/do_move/cost.html). Not to many of them are "house phone style" modems. Their 3G data service is the same as the service you receive at MTN and Vodacom.
You welcome to share their to-do list.
EDIT: I'm talking about their data service, I'm really not concerned about their mobile voice service and generally if people refer to 3G they mean data.

to-do-list?
Data bundles for pre-paid
Support for VAS
Settings for MMS
Update on their call rates ( Ever since the change in the inter-connection fees : Telkom mobile have not changed)
Whenever requesting a balance it would be nice not to have 3 sms's together with it
USSD for checking other bundles
To start roaming with MTN already

No! They will be launched officially under a new brand name.

Sure, but it does not change the fact that they have launched 3G more than a year ago!
Any case I want to know when we can use their 21Mbps network for data.

No. I suppose not. They actually started rolling out 3G in early 2008 already.

ok, the latest, is that Telkom has pushed the launch date to end of Sept 2010--Victor from the "Telkom 3G on the move" support centre. Apparently, some delays due to "can't say much", but they will be launching with hopping on MTN at same time. Prices will remain the same. Thought you should know.
