Heya'll

I live in Pinelands.
I would like to know which is the best wireless provider in Cape Town (Sentech, Uninetwork, Wireless Online etc.)
Download, Upload, P2P, Gaming etc. etc.

Thanks if you can help...
Cheers..

It seems everyone has a different experience with every provider when you read through the various related forums.
I do use p2p, but definately not excessively, ..no large movies, games etc., and not the whole week long, so it is important to me that it is available.
It would be nice to be able to do a bit of gaming online, although I am no freak.
A good international surfing speed is a priority I suppose, obviously :)

I would say that you best chance would be with Uninet then Wireless Online, I remember their sales guy telling me that they have good international speed. When Uninet get's a repeater in my area, which is in LOS I will most likely move to then, although they aren't as cheap as Megaserve for a 128k connection. I heard that Wireless Online is going to change their price structure, so they might be a good option too.

I would stay away from Megaserve/Netcontacts if you want to use P2P. They hardly work and when connected you will be downloading slower then a 56k modem. I haven't yet got anything more then 5 kB/s, avg. would be 2kB/s. HTTP browsing is good and can't really complain about that.

Good Luck,

which connection do you think is the minimum for a decent speed? 64k 128k etc?

I find it hard to believe that with the number of informed people on this forum, that no one can tell me the state of Uninetwork's or Wireless Online's current service!?
I looked at the Uninetwork Forum, but it looks dead for some reason..no new posts since a couple of months ago..

MrE everyone here basically has there own opinion on each WISP from previous experience or what ever, granted there are ones that service really suxs (Megaserv-Netcontacts). Uninetwork and Wireless Online are the ones that always seem to get mentioned as being average. Dont be fooled and think great you going to sign up and P2P all day and all night, NO ONE offers that besides for TELKOM (where you are shaped over and over again). But for general good browsing and downloading the odd tool or file these two would be the best bet. They know what they doing have good coverage and dont try doing the impossible like giving a client covered by trees access for two to three hours a day by boosting their AP and Client signals.... The choice at the end of the day is yours.....;..

This is probably the 5th thread you have started regarding this.. I gave you my opinion on Uninet about a month ago or so, and it still has not changed. Uninet's speeds are excellent and so are their pings. P2P can work and so can torrents.

Go for the 64k and upgrade if u need to.

As I meantioned too, Uninet is probably your best bet.

If I could see a Uninet tower then I would move to them. They seem to have the best package/performance around.

I would check Uninet out before going with them. A friend of mine has been a customer for just over a year. They live out in Milnerton and she does development for clients in the UK. She says she hasn't been able to get her mail through their service for the past four days and cannot browse her websites (co.za) through their network. She has to dial up to get in. She is moving to ADSL cause she says she cannot handle the lacklustre performance and downtime which she says is regular.

Rainman im afraid that sounds a bit dodgy. Has she called support? Is her modem facing the wrong direction? Has she got her settings right? Is she trying to seng a 300GB file? There are variables - and if each variable is taken care of then she will have a good service, same as I have. She should really check the quesions above tho just in case. If she's in CT area I could go see whats up if need be?? You do sound like a Telkom mouthpiece tho.. :)

MaD i can confirm that she has spoken to their support people and it seems as if they just dont know what to do. I dont know her setup, just that she has had problems from the start and is now so fed up that she feels she has to go the adsl route. She is in milnerton and if you think you can help i am sure she wont mind any advice or help she can get. email me on salvatio30@hotmail.com and I will put you guys in contact. And no I don't have a single piece of telkom equipment in my home and trying hard to keep it that way :-)
