View Full Version : Dialling into Mweb DSL with 3G

Is there a way to dial into my existing Mweb DSL account using my phone and still get 3G speeds?
I tried setting up as a normal modem and dialling in that way but the fastest speed I get is 28Kbps
Then I thought maybe I should be setting it up as a broadband connection (using XP SP2)
When I do that (with the Nokia 6680 connected to the USB port) it looks for a WAN Miniport and then fails
If I setup a normal modem with *99# then I get 3G speeds but I'm dialling into MTN, how much will I be charged for this?
Any suggestions?

The best way to connect is to use the software included wih your phone.
I think its called quick connect or something like that.
You just start the app and click connect.
As far as I can tell, normal dial-up and 3g are two completely different connection methods.

Thanks for that I used the Nokia software and couldn't find Mweb listed (MTN is there) so I decided to configure manually.
It wanted an access point, username and password. I called Mweb tech support to ask for the access point details...
It took a while but I eventually established that I can't connect to my mweb dsl account with 3G.
So I asked when Mweb plans to get onto the 3G network and the guy told me, no that's a cellphone provider service.
So then I said okay so all you can offer me is a slow 28Kbps dialin when I'm connecting by cellphone.
Yes.
Now maybe I'm just a clueless consumer but if I dial *99# for the MTN connection it should be a simple matter of Mweb offering me a *??# number too
You seem to have your "wires" crossed a little, st3ve.
MWeb supports analog dial-in (via a telkom phone number), apart from ISDN and ADSL. When you configure your cellphone as a modem (and 28.8k speeds) you're dialing in to MWEB via the cellphone, and then telkom network. You pay MWEB a monthly ISP fee to get in, and you pay MTN/Telkom for "talk" minutes on the cellphone/line.
With 3G, MTN is both your connection and your ISP. It's not possible to dial-in to MWEB via 3G, unless you have a set-up where you establish a 3G connection with MTN, and then somehow make a data-VOIP call to MWEB's number (which you wouldn't want to do anyway...)

Thanks Jano
You've explained very nicely the issue at hand, but what I'm saying is that:
1. The technology to dial into a Telkom line to my ISP has always existed, eventually cellular technology came along so the phone was also a modem and you could dial into the Telkom line to access your ISP.
2. Cellular technology has now gone beyond being just a slow dial up modem, it is now 3g.
3. Why then can I not circumvent having to dial into a dedicated Telkom ISP line, if the technology exists (as it does when I dial into MTN using *99#)
4. What I'm really saying is that Mweb needs to get in touch with MTN (and Cell C and Vodacom) and negotiate that their subscribers can access Mweb services by 3g. Surely this is what they did with Telkom when they said they wanted to use the line as a POP number?

You already have access to the Internet via the 3G myMTN APN.
Just surf over to the MWeb homepage and login with your MWeb account name and password.
The link is:
Your PC -> your 3G phone -> MTN APN -> MTN gateway -> MWeb gateway.
This is the quickest it will get and does not go through any dial up lines but through the Internet "backbone" directly between the ISPs.

But then by going through the MTN gateway I will incur costs after I exceed my monthly free data usage
What I was hoping for was to 'dial' into my Mweb ADSL account (when not connected by Telkom and router - since I only have one subscription to Mweb)
and then I wouldn't incur any more costs (until I hit my 3b limit) But then I guess that gets me back to Telkom.
....er...I'm not making any sense am I?
Hmm, maybe we should just scrap this entire thread :o

HOW did I find this OLD thread ?????????? :)
You are confusing a number of different technologies.
A modem is an analogue wired device -- old dial up ( even if it was 56K ) It is a point to MULTI point device
ADSL even though it says dial up is not really. It is a constantly up wired point to point technology utilising the local loop
3G utilises RADIO it is a type of radio "modem" Radio towers are connected to the WIRED backbone then into the central or provider exchanges It is also always up and point to point so in this respect it is similar to DSL ( the RADIO equivalent )
BUT you cannot normally mix WIRELESS and WIRED. You CANNOT "dial" into your DSL account -- as per the telephone ( modem) way. Although ADSL does use the normal telephone infrastructure. You can put a modem on the "telephone" side of the ADSL and use that in the OLD way. You can also NOT dial into ADSL from a cell phone -- you can dial a MODEM from your cell phone though -- and MIGHT get more than 28,800 Kbps ( note BITS ) You can also use a cellphone to connect to your computer and use that to get to 3G -- BUT it is NOT the same as dialing one of the OLD modems that was hung on a NORMAL ANALOGUE telephone line.
The only way to "dial" into your MWEB account would be by establishing a connection to the Internet and then using something like VPN to "tunnel" to your systems connected to ADSL. Be prepared to PAY.
There are other options that you use in different variations to get different things connected--like ISDN which is a DIAL point to Multi-Point. Then you start needing multi mode access routers to bring everything together
You can still access your ADSL and be wireless if you use WiFi ( 802.11 ) You will need an AP ( access point device ) -- takes the wired stuff and makes it wireless -- BUT NOT 3G.
If you wanted lots of bandwidth REMOTELY you could connect a 3G router to your ADSL via some sort of switch. Now you are "dialing" īnto ADSL --- BUT you are paying TWICE. Unless you are using the new to be announced VODACOM ALL-IN-ONE PACKAGE deal. To be followed soon after by MTN / MWEB
It makes a lot more sense to CONVERGE VOICE and DATA. WHY can you not have an embedded cellular device that switches seamlessly between VOICE and DATA on the cellular network ? ( NOTE I am NOT talking about VOIP -- I am following the ADSL analogy) Connect a headphone set up to your laptop if you want privacy -- otherwise just use the Speaker and Mic , and away you go VOICE and DATA -- ADSL is just frequency multiplexing -- so can the cellular technologies. I wonder WHO is going to be the one to make MILLIONS on this idea ?
