Just got this by e-mail:
I felt it was the right time to share the excitement about out new Mede8er release that we have been working on. Our main goal on V4 was to implement HD Audio support for the DD+ hardware and to do our best to improve the general Mede8er experience.
We have had some huge challenges as we had to change to a new SDK (all the normal issues that come with new SDK's) and we also had no Flash memory space left on the Mede8er hardware. To resolve the Flash memory problem we built in support for HFS file system and now the code can be squashed with the net effect of a 50% space saving in the Mede8er Flash. We recognized that our network performance was not up to the market requirements and we have spend a lot of time optimizing this and squeezing every last drop out of our hardware. The improvement in network performance (streaming) is good and we will possibly have one of the better performing Realtek players in terms of network streaming.
To design a GUI that suits everyone is rather challenging and I can also add that its been a lot of weekend and late night work. I think we have more than achieved our design goals after many months of hard work I am pleased to announce that V4 GUI is really looking good.
The browse by cover art has been the highest requested Mede8er user requirement to date, so we decided to implement this functionality but we took this concept one step further. Firstly we designed the wall to be the right size from a normal viewing distance and secondly we made sure that the operational speed was acceptable even over the home network. The ability to custom map folders and shares and consolidate all of these on the wall has made its functionality rather special. We also added the bonus of being able to apply Genre artwork to each shortcut on the wall. We have even allowed for the ability to add custom Genre art to the wall. All in all a very nice experience and I am sure that most of you will enjoy this new functionality.
V4 is basically complete and just needs to pass the Alpha test stage and then it will be released to the Beta team for further testing. Unless we come across a curve ball we are hoping to be on track for a public release in September.
At this point I would like to thank Insomniac , Maasbommel and Getsko for their time spent and valuable input in getting V4 to this stage.
Highlights of V4
Support Dolby True HD and DTS MA passthrough - DD+ hardware
New Video Wall with mapped share functionality
New GUI
Improved network streaming performance (both Samba & NFS / DD+ and DD hardware)
Improved and fixed SAMBA NTFS write (NAS Mode)
Shoutcast Radio API implementation
New SDK and general improvement and bug fix
Picture Thumbnail Viewer
Improved upsampled picture quality SD content

@AstroTurf this is a media player, not recorder although I really hope that one day we'll be able to get a device that we can plug into our HD PVRs and record content via HDMI, I seriously doubt that will happen.
But onto the topic at hand, I am very excited about the new firmware and I cannot wait for it to be released. I've had my Mede8er since November last year and I've never once regretted my decision in buying it and just by the fact that they have put so much effort into this release, is a stark reminder of the shear committment they have in their product. Of course we'll see how it plays come release, but they have always released stable firmware updates in the past and I trust that this will be no different.

um, you need to buy some hardware that can support that capability if you want it. Otherwise you are in the wrong thread.

I also have a mede8er and very happy with it... Looking forward to the new firmware...
For Recording I have a Tivo, works well and automatically records all my series.. Check out the TivoZA forum (http://tivoza.nanfo.com/wiki/index.php/TivoZA) or the Quick Tour (http://tivoza.nanfo.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_Tour) for more info...
DTSV Decoder connects to the Tivo and the Tivo to your Tv, also the tivo can change the channels on the dstv decoder, you are also able to pause/rewind/etc 'live' tv

Yep, combine the two at a reasonable price and I will be interested.
My OLD PC does all of the above and more. I can for the price of a tivo and a mede8er (along with drives) get a HD capable pc, load it with one of the many free media centres out there and have much more flexibility and functionality than 2 separate devices.

Are you referring to hardware? Because then that cannot be used as an argument here wink or no wink :)
I just felt the need to comment as I have read much on other threads about the Mede8er firmware being far superior to that of the ACRyan. I found it interesting reading that they are only talking about releasing this now while the ACRyan firmware for the new SDK came out almost a month ago. Yes, there is a lot of work that still needs to be done on it to fix some bugs but from the sounds of this Mede8er one they expect much the same problems.
Or are they just piggy backing on the ACRyan one? ;)

I also have the “PC Solution”, but it does not work out cheaper than a mede8tor, and its deffnitaly not better, you need at least a PentiumD 2.0Ghz with 1gb ram, then you need at least a Gforce 6series Graphics card, and even with this you still need a sound card capable of trueHD with the required outputs, and this alone costs in the R1500 range, and besides the price, a pc is big and noisy, and if you want to watch a movie you have to wait ages for the thing to start up, and if you have more than one TV/Plasma in you home, you need to unplug the whole bulky thing and set it up again in the other room
I would swap my pc any day for a mede8tor

The problem with media players is they can not record, for the price of a mede8er, Tivo and the hard drives you will need I could buy a laptop with HDMI and a USB tv card.
Mede8er is great as a player, but in essence that is all it does.

What do you want to record?
SD DSTV isn't really worth recording (unless you're watching it on a laptop screen), and HD DSTV you're not going to record with a USB TV Card....

So then buy an A.C. Ryan Playon!DVR-HD... it's basically the same hardware but with a record function for slightly more in terms of cost.

Its pointless - how must the device change channels (on DSTV/TopTV decoder)? Where's it going to get the guide? etc. etc.
I ran a media center since XP Media Center... its not a simple task, replacing it with a HDPVR was the best thing I did. TV recording and media playback are easier seperate in SA.

Yeh - but remember, most of these devices don't change channels to record the channel you want to record, you have to do it manually....
AstroTurf
14-09-2010, 10:23 AM
Many do change channels.
Currently we just set it up manually (on pc and on decoder) takes about 5 minutes to set up for 15+ programs.
Also I have no interest in permanent storage as the quality is not as good as it can be, 500GB is plenty space for recording and showshifting for what we do.

Hi, guys I am new to all this. Looking for a media player... I was looking at the WD TV Live HD but I then read that it has a problem playing mkv files that was created with the new versions of MKVToolnix (something to do with "header removal compression"). Although they are apparently working on a fix. But since then I've been looking at other players.
Now I am looking at the mede8er med500x. But it seems to have the same problem with mkv and "header removal compression". http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/topic,1896.0.html Can you guys confirm that this have not been fixed? Or that it will be fixed?
Apparently there is a way to remux (spelling?) it so that it will work but I would rather have it work straight out of the box.
Thanks guys.

The scary part it that it might be a hardware limitation on the realtek chips.
AC Ryan Staff:

We have reported all we know about this issue to Realtek since it is out of our hands to fix it on our side.
...
and
benlye wrote:
Now the question is, is it something which can be fixed by a firmware (by Realtek) or it is totally a hardware issue where there is no way it can be fix by a new firmware.
AC Ryan Staff:
That we don't know right now. Since we don't work with Realtek. We can only report what we would like to be changed and then hope they can solve it. During this process we get very little information. There is no reason to blame realtek, ac ryan or matroska. The reality is that there is a issue with this and we have done everything we can, but also other realtek based mediaplayer/companies probably have also done the same.
This is probably the most known issue currently and we can only wait and see if there will be a permanent fix for next SDK.

I see that VLC player 1.0.5 plays all expect nr 7 of those files, and the progress bar doesn't work correctly on all. Would be interesting to see how some of the other players would respond to those. Apparently the Popcorn Hour C-200 had the header compression thing fixed in its firmware.

Hi All Mede8ers
The long awaited V4 is finally here.
This release has taken a lot longer than we had ever dreamed as we had huge SDK problems with V4 and had to change to a later SDK that also had its share of problems - We are pleased to announce that most problems are now resolved. We think we now have a very fast and responsive release that is very stable under most conditions. We welcome you to try it and give us your feedback.

YAMJ BETA 3 works fine for me - make sure you got the .NFO file (text file with imdb hyperlink) and Y2M will generate the artwork with no issues.
My problem has been more to do with stability. The app chugs away for a while and then just hangs. Using Win7 x64.

Did you replace the MediaInfo files?

For those of you wanting to generate folder and about art, I've been having better success with ThumbGen (http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/topic,2006.0.html) than with YAMJ.
I've been having issues with ThumbGen - every time I run it - the first time it says "Skipped" on all the movies, and then the second time it works.

Yamj not working for me either. I did all they said and replaced the x64 files. But I just get a program error.

Yup. I managed to do one folder with 74 movies in. The next one had 208 of which it managed to process about 15 before it stopped.

I've been using the semi-automatic mode, without hassle. Also found a nice template to go with it: http://www.wdtvlive.net/showthread.php?179-Lstar337-s-Split-Sheet-Templates

My sincere apologies if this has been dealt with before.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a link that explains how to get your video wall setup?
Thanks,

Anyone else noticed a sound delay when pausing a movie? Yamj gives an error, but still works, if you have linked the Yamj folder correctly.

I have also noticed the sound delay.
Yesterday some videos had audio sync problems.

never noticed that before - I've noticed when you pause the video stops slightly before the sound - but when you play again everything is fine.

You guys can also try TVixie (http://www.tvixie.com/) to generate the cover art. I find it much easier to use than YAMJ and Thumbgen.

Doesn't work for me either. Crashes when I click on anything.
Why don't people just upload the wall art that they have made somewhere so that others can download it?

+1. Very good idea. Especially TV series. Cannot find the balance on how to rename series, that Yamj does it correctly. Even "theRenamer" is frustratingly bad at renaming stuff.

Good idea.
If I have time, I will upload.
I prefer to use YAMJ on my own since it has a look at the video files and lets you what type of files you have.
Eg. sound and type of video etc...

Why don't you guys try Ember Media Manager (http://sourceforge.net/projects/emm-r/) to scrape for the movie posters and NFO's? It's free.

That is a really good Idea, with Tvixie I managed to get over 150 of my movies done, would be a nice start :)
Only thing is, where can we put them?

I would suggest that we just use Free File hosting sites for now.
put all your pics into an archive and upload it to MediaPortal or DropBox or something and then put a link here for us.

Looks like their main website is down, http://www.embermm.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi
Do you know if they have a 64 bit version?
Gonna try that 32 bit version now and see if it runs on x64.

Hi Garyvdh
They have a X64 version.
The original developer has stopped working on it. Another person has picked up the development and now calls it EMM-R. The link I gave you is for the X64.
Just search on sourceforge.net

I've been trying to install TViXie, which came recommended for my TViX medial player, but the darn thing refuses to install no matter what I try. Keeps giving a missing script error. I tried the binary version, but same error. I see you use TViXie Gary - I assume it installed fine on your machine?

Is anyone experiencing a sound delay on divx files with stereo audio? If am finding that my TV rips all play with about 1s delay in audio (i.e. I see people talking before hearing the sound), but mkv with DTS for example is perfect. Stopping and starting playback with the resume makes no difference. I'm using the SPDIF pass through into my Logitech Z5500's with the no HD Audio firmware.

Check your bootloader version. I have delays on all sound when pausing and restarting. Forum suggested i relaod my bootloader version to 26L, and then reinstall the firmware.

I was on bootloader 23 when I updated from 3.0.4 to 4 final. I had a quick look through the mede8er forum and I'm not seeing a separate bootloader 26l for download.

I'm with you!!
The whole point of a media player is that you have a large library of the latest movies that you want to watch. Why the hell would you want to record what is on TV?
Precisely, media "player" should be self explanatory. And lets face it, why would you even consider recording with all the repeats we get besides, that's what the HD PVR is for.

Thanks, I eventually got pointed at that process on the mede8er forum. Hasn't solved my problem however :(
Also don't understand why they did not include the BL update in the final release.

Which model do you have? Did you update the bootloader?
MED500X ONLY
Pls try a few times and if it still does not update the bootloader then you will need to do the 17L Bootloader Patch procedure
http://www.mede8er.org/public_beta/0017L_bootloader_patch.zip
Instructions for updating from Bootloader 17L
a) Download 0017L_bootloader_patch.zip
b) Unzip the file 0017L_bootloader_patch.zip and you will find 2 files inside.
install.img and install.dat
c) Copy these files to the root of a USB drive
d) Install via Emergency Procedure.
--- On the first stage you will see the patch install on the screen
--- then the Mede8er will reboot
--- Next you will see BETA2 install on screen and a yellow box after half of progression bar stating it has to reboot
--- then another reboot
--- then again it starts to install BETA2 and finishes with install complete and reboots
THE PROCESS IS NOT COMPLETE SO PLEASE CARRY ON
e) Delete the two files install.dat / install.img on the USB stick
f) Unrar/Unzip the file (Depends on your requrement)
MED500X_V4_INC_HD_AUDIO_25Jan2011 or MED500X_V4_NO_HD_AUDIO_25Jan2011
and copy the install.img to the root of the USB stick.
g) Update the Mede8er in the normal way via Emergency procedure
Please be patient as the update from 17L is much longer that the normal firmware update.

I am posting this in this thread, because I do want to start a new thread. I am using Thumbgen, which is working great to a certain extent. I am creating the images and moviesheets for Movies without an issue. But I need some help with creating moviesheets for Series. I am getting it for some series, but for others I am not. Is there perhaps best practice I should use to get this info.
Hope someone out there can help me
