I am sold!

I am upgrading in November and I am going for the Galaxy S ('cept if something super duper gets released before then).

I was considering the iPhone 4 and N8 as well, but the Galaxy S is just so awesome the others can't compare.

That is all.

I would love a new samsung galaxy s or a new htc desire ... but they have been floating around oversees for a while and now there are new models. So when they do arrive in stores here and not on preorder or out of stock please try next week, i probably won't buy one because now they feel old. If they moved those phones fast enough I would have bought the galaxy s 3 months ago and gone damn I will try that HD version aswell!

Better off waiting for the Desire HD if you really want the cream of the crop, it takes the crown from the Galaxy S which was the fastest phone on paper and overall set of specs.

The screen is too big :/ The Galaxy S is already pushing it. The Desire HD is moving into Tablet country.

Plus I can't see the Desire HD being as light as the Galaxy S. The normal desire is heavier than the GS.

Between the two I'd say it comes down to personal preference. The Desire HD has an even bigger screen which would be awesome for some and just too big for others.
Plus it's LCD, not Super AMOLED ;)

Personally I'd have a hard time choosing between the two. But I've heard bad things about sound quality when listening to music or watching videos from HTC phones. As well as bad signal reception. Sound quality is important to me since I use my phone as a music player, and my SGS is brilliant with that.
Samsung on the other hand are always screwing up something major in the software, you still need a lag fix to get this phone to perform as flawlessly as the other Froyo 1Ghz phones.

My HTC-TP had awful sound quality and crappy voice call quality. I want to kill it dead now that I have my SGS.

As nice as it is, personally, there's a utilitarian point where however good the graphics, shine and polish are, it's not worth only achieving 1 day battery life for it (and yes, I know someone who has one).

I must say, i am very astonished to how light the sgs feels. Sofar best phone I have had. My previous favourite phone was also a samsung, D600. What a kickass fone at the time. Yes that is how long ago i have been without an upgrade in the phone department. S AMOLED, is just insane.

I stilll need to get the hang of some apps. I am writing this by testing out the tethering and it is awesome and lightning fast and easy to set up.

Maybe try the Voodoo LagFix for the i9000. Currently using it on my i897.

I got a SGS on the 2nd September, must admit it is a great phone besides the major lag every now and then and the poor battery life.

I use Advanced Task Killer Free to zap the programs i'm not using, as well as I turn off GPS/WIFI/Bluetooth when not using it, with brightness set to minimum

Went for a drive yesterday, phone fully charged in the morning (07:15), I used the GPS for about 30 minutes, had a 10 minute call, did about 20 minutes web browsing. I look at the phone again at around 14:00 and it is screaming to be recharged.

I am really contemplating buying an extended battery pack (http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/mugen-power-3200mah-extended-battery-for-samsung-galaxys-i9000.html) so the phone doesnt die before I get home.

If you're going to use gps in the car, then you'll want to plug it into a car charger.
GPS zaps any devices battery quickly. Even my Tomtom one's battery lasts under 2 hours and it's gps only.

Advanced Task Killer is completely unnecessary. Your phone might be better off without it.
Maybe you have an app that is draining your battery because I have never killed my battery so fast and I sometimes use my phone very heavily. Go to Settings -> Applications -> Running services to see what is running in the background.
Settings -> About -> Battery usage will show you where exactly all the battery power is going.

Also use the Kies software to check you have the latest firmware. Maybe an update will help battery life.

Woah, 2 hours on a tom tom. hectic. Hmm, will tackle that software and give it a try :) Hopefully can notice the difference. Supposedly Froyo is being released this month for the SGS..hopefully!

Awesome phone indeed, battery life sucks. Only lasts a day, and I dont even play on it much.
Have no apps running in the background and also disabled unneeded services. Hopefully the 2.2 update will help

blaaislaai, my batterly life has been pretty good, until last night. it was 100 charged wen i went to bed and this morning it was 60. there was something wrong. i checked the battery usage and it said this other program, an RSS feeder chowed 83 percent of the power. and i checked with advanced task killer and it said that that app was not running. i am a bit confused. perhaps you also have some program that chows you battery.

the thing is, I only have one process running which is the advanced task killer. I also have SGS tools to kill some stuff even further. But none of them seems to work.
Will check out the xda developers forum for a fix. I guess the easiest would be to underclock the CPU to save battery power. Will be trying that out today

http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/samsung/samsung-galaxy-s-i9000/mugen-power-3200mah-extended-battery-for-samsung-galaxys-i9000.html

This would probably dubble battery life, but it would make your phone bulky and alot more heavier. Was considering it, until I saw how big the phone gets.

JA, i saw there was a cpu app, called cpuReset or something, but i think it is a paid app. I read about it on XDA i think. There is a tut to sho you how to set it up. dont have the link at the mo.

Almost 30% heavier. I'll take the SGS.

Them batteries are gimmicks, the was a full report under the Nexus One forums on XDA. It seems the best value for money is the OEMs.

Just my two cents... I'm thinking of picking up a Galaxy S as an upgrade for my HTC Hero.

I was going to wait for the Desire HD, but for a number or reasons, I'm rather choosing to take the SGS now. Firstly, the Desire HD will probably only be around in South Africa in December. It's going to be at least 50% more expensive than the SGS too. I can get the SGS for R259p/m from MTN. Definitely won't be possible with the Desire HD.

Then there's the hardware itself. The Desire HD is going to be the sexiest phone ever, I have no doubt. Solid block of aluminium, big screen, it's going to be beautiful. The SGS lacks the reassuring bulk of the HTC phones, but although it's entirely plastic, it feels solid in your hand.

Then there's the misconception that the Desire HD is going to be faster. The Desire HD is HTC's fastest phone to date, but NOT the fastest ANDROID phone to date, and still not as quick as the SGS. I think we will need to see side by side benchmarks to be sure, but for now, on paper, the SGS can push out 90 million triangles per second whilst the Desire HD manages only 40 million (compared to 20 million of the original Desire). I spent the weekend playing around with a friend's SGS and it is noticeably quicker than the Desire.

Anyway, that's my two cents. If you can wait for the Desire HD, you won't be sorry. But if you DO wait, just know that it won't be long before we see Dual Core phones popping up. I just feel that the SGS is the better phone to get right now, given the performance it delivers and the price you can have it at.

I've switched off 3G, GPS, bluetooth, auto sync, etc and my battery is lasting 4 to 5 days.
When I have it all on the battery lasts a day or so.

Maybe something is still on.

I don't really bugger around much on my phone, only about 30 min a day I think.

To all the people complaining about battery life: since when does a high end smart phone get more than a day? You're supposed to charge it at night. If you want a phone that lasts for days on end then get an old Nokia.

A high end phone that gets 2 days battery life is pretty damn good

A big-ass one. Most of the phone is just battery, with only minute amounts of space going to the chips, screen etc. Heck they even switched to Microsim just to make more space.
