Today I received our regular love letter from Telkom, requesting that money be paid into their account or else our line'll be cut off. :D
Bundled with the statement was an Afrikaans advertisement for their SurfMore, HomeDSL192 and HomeDSL 384 products, bundled with a computer.
Yes, that computer.
Anyway, I had a quick shufti at this advertisement, and, very interesting, noticed that your basic HomeDSL192 is cheaper than your ISDN option. However, the analogue option is the cheapest of them all.
Call costs and package costs aside, Teklom claims that you first must have infrastructure access for analogue, ISDN or ADSL, otherwise you won't qualify.
In other words - no line, no dice.
So what do you do if you phone Teklom, make arrangements for a DSL line, they promise heaven and earth, and you rush to the shop, purchase the computer, (shop also promise that you'll get your line), and you rush back home with sweaty hands...
a) ...only to wait forever for your DSL line to be installed.
b) ...they come and install DSL, but the DSL line is down more often than it's working.
c) ...there is a musical chair comedy of errors as there is not enough DSLAM ports for everybody who just purchased the same computer... and Teklom refuses to install new lines.
And in the meantime you'll have to pay your brand-new PC off, unable to use it for its intended purpose.
Mweh... no thanks, I think I'll pass this one.
Call me pessimistic, but I've heard so many tales of woe regarding DSL installations, and poor performance of DSL lines that it's not funny.
