8ta contracts announced and available from 8 Nov 2010

I just saw a 2 page spread in the Sunday papers where 8ta announces its contracts. I summarize below for reference:

Package 1:
Cost R90 per month, inlcude 90 minutes 8ta to 8ta and landlines, 15 min to other cellular, 25MB Data
Package 2:
Cost R130 per month, include 130 minutes 8ta to 8ta and landlines, 30 min to other cellular, 25MB Data
Package 3:
Cost R230 per month, include 230 minutes 8ta to 8ta and landlines, 60 min to other cellular, 25MB Data
Package 4:
Cost R500 per month, include 500 minutes 8ta to 8ta and landlines, 200 min to other cellular, 50MB Data

Out of bundle costs for all contracts are the same and listed below:
8ta to 8ta (whole day) R0.95 per minute
8ta to landlines (whole day) R0.65 per minute
8ta to cellular (peak rate) R1.75 per minute
8ta to cellular (off peak) R0.95 per minute
SMS/MMS R0.50 per sms with 50 free per day if you send 5 sms messages per day
Data R1.00 per MB
Normal data bundles available.
For first 100 000 contracts the subscriber can choose 1 Telkom landline number to which you can call unlimited for 24 months with a limit of 30 minutes per call.

Specials available now include phones and free pay as you go starter packs and I summarize as well:

Contract 1 (R90 per month)
Samsung Galaxy 550

Contract 2 (R130 per month)
Nokia E5 plus a Nokia 5030, a starter pack and R10 airtime

Contract 3 (R230 per month)
Motorola Flipout plus Samsung Champ, a starter pack and R100 airtime voucher

The OOB rates are certainly better than MTNs pathetic rates on the equivalent AnyTime contracts.

The 8ta website has now been updated with more deals:

First the mention of a Hybrid contract where the inclusive minutes can be used for voice calls or data but no further information. Mention of normal contacts as well as Top up contracts where you load normal vouchers when you have depleted your inclusive minutes/data.

Voice minutes on all contracts and hybrid contracts will carry over for a maximum period of 6 months and all minutes will be used on a first in first out basis, This means that you will first use your oldest minutes and not the latest.

The following Data contracts are available with a free modem on 24 months contracts:

Internet 1 - R195 per month - 650 MB per month - 30c/MB in bundle rate, OOB rate 30c/MB
Internet 2 - R280 per month - 1.5 GB per month - 18c/MB in bundle rate, OOB rate 30c/MB
Internet 3 - R500 per month - 3.2GB per month - 15c/MB in bundle rate, OOB rate 30c/MB

All inclusive bundles only valid for calendar month in which it was added and will be added on 1st of the month.

Data bundles can be added that will expire at the end of next month at the following rate (the same for prepaid and contract voice):
Once-Off Internet 100MB: R50.00
Once-Off Internet 250MB: R100.00
Once-Off Internet 500MB: R150.00
Once-Off Internet 1GB: R250.00

Lets hope that this will be reviewed soon to allow for more data as well as to allow for the data bundles to carry over for up to 6 months like voice contracts.

Looking at the data bundles to be added to data contracts, it does not make sense to buy anything smaller than a 1 Gig as your effective rate will be more than the OOB rate. Another reason for 8ta to urgently review these data rates

What will happen to my current contract with Telkom 3g? Will they migrate them to the new packages?
