I see Microsoft and Intel are backing HD-DVD (toshiba), and hollywood is backing Bly-Ray (sony). Actually stupid, its all about money in the end, why not just make one standard??

And all the while they argue about who gets to make the new standard they could've been researching the NEXT big jump in technology for the past three years.
Evolution is held back by stupid people.

Wonder if Sony is going to win this one too - they sure came out winners with the Sony VHS vs BetaMAX saga.

Actually it was JVC VHS vs SONY Betamax. Which Sony clearly lost.

I'm particularly keen to see Sony win this one, as it will be a nice big green tick in their favour vs M$

I think the winner might be toshiba
Fact 1 = Intel and Microsoft will integrate special goodies for HD-DVD
Fact 2 = 36DVDs = 6 Blu-Ray Discs = 1 HVD
Well i know what i would support! And Samsung has a new player that would be able to read both formats.
What format would you support?

Got this outa wikipedia:
HD DVD has a single layer capacity of 15 GB and a dual-layer capacity of 30 GB. Toshiba has announced a triple-layer disc is in development, which would offer 45GB of storage. This is smaller than its primary competitor Blu-ray Disc, which supports 25GB for one layer, 50GB for two and 100GB for four.
It seems to contradict your "facts".
But actualy bluray and hd-dvd is nothing, check out hvd: HVD wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc)

Actually only 2 Hollywood companies are supporting Blu-Ray: Walt Disney and Twentieth Century Fox while
Warner Bros. Studios, New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures endorse HD DVD

I need an HDV drive! It's a pitty the blu-ray might not see the light who knows.
But I back blu-ray since it will allow more storage capacity than HD-DVD.
But HDV will hold 3.9 Terra Bytes thats 3993 GB WoW!
And to think we could have had HDV now if they really wanted to improve storage capacity instead of making money :(

HVD actualy :)

At a transfer rate of 1 Gb\s, ie 128MB\s. So it would take about 9 hours to read the entire thing

HVD sounds like the format they should be heading for ... not these in-between blu-ray and HD-DVD .... the technology is there ... its just that it does not belong to one of the big companies ... or it would have been available by now :)

Funnilly enough, most professional video is still done on betamax thanks its superior quality. Sony lost the consumer market but still owns the multimedia industry, VHS is dead but Betamax lives on ;)

er...no 'cos Sony Pictures (i.e. Columbia, TriStar etc.) strangely enough supports Blu-Ray. The split between supporters is roughly 50-50 in hollywood (very slightly in favour of Blu-ray, based on turnover of the studios, but that can change with a few hits for one or other studio). Also it is important to note that NONE of the studios has said that they will exclusively support one format over the other, rather they'll wait and see and change if neccessary.
EDIT: Paramount has now made a Blu-Ray announcement http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/03/technology/dvd_paramount.reut/index.htm
The success of DVD can be largely attributed to PlayStation 2 which put a DVD player in many homes by default, and thus helped to create a market. Sony believes that a similar halo effect can be created by the PS3.
The fact that Microsoft and Intel screwed up the comparison between the two formats may mean that they don't really have a concrete plan. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=28480
The fact that almost all the consumer electronics companies including some that don't EVER collaborate (Sony and Matsu****a (i.e JVC/Panasonic); LG and Samsung) are united in support of Blu-Ray may also make a huge difference. Not to mention HP and Dell..... In the consumer electronics and Computer hardware space, Toshiba stands pretty much alone on HD-DVD.
I'm betting on Blu-Ray...or on a Pioneer combo player that will doubtless appear after a year or so...
EDIT No 2.: Now it seems like warner Bros is also going to support Blu-Ray... http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=26790

Sony on Friday declared victory in the battle over the next-generation DVD standard, after Warner Brothers, the Hollywood studio that has been a long-time supporter of rival Japanese group Toshiba, said it would back its Blu-ray disc format in addition to Toshiba's HD-DVD.

meh, these "battles" get me down. It's like the damn PS3 vs X360 debates, PS3 - blu-Ray, X360 - HD-DVD, in the end, people will either
a) Back the format their favourite system uses
b) Back the format that most companies endorse or
c) get a DVD/whatever player that can play both
i'm going for c) (and PS3 ;))
