Rather get Opera Mobile. Mini is just pointless now.
It's good for when you want to save bandwidth, but for the rest of the time Dolphin HD is better in my opinion.

The Facebook app sucks. Rather use touch.facebook.com and use the Ebuddy app for chat. Ebuddy is also a good general IM program that is reliable and efficient enough to leave running in the background, unlike many others.

Ah, I didn't know Opera Mobile had been released (albeit a Beta - downloading now).

Yes it's only a few days old. Much better than Mini, and with Turbo on it saves about as much bandwidth.
Still not as nice to use as Dolphin HD yet, but it will probably get there.

Also "Dazzle Configurable Switcher" is a nice free app that lets you add some widgets to configure brightness and a bunch of other things.

Im also looking for a good free clock&weather widget (ie. one widget that has both) - something like the accuweather widget that comes on the galaxy s, but with a digital clock face instead of the analogue. Anyone know of anything good??

Hacked Google Navigation that works in SA:

Besides that, nope. If you want something that works offline you'll need to buy/pirate it.

Best music player would have to be PowerAMP, but Cubed(^3) is good as well as a 2nd choice.

You can also download MapQuest for free....it's available in the Android Market.

I know Route 66's POI is really crap, but the navigation itself is very good.

On things MapQuest.

Couple of bugs on this one.
GPS lock is fast, but it's always placing me in the next road while driving or a good few meters adjacent to it.
When taking turns, it really gets d****y.

Might just be a bug, but I don't think navigation settings are functional in RSA.
Another bug is that the "Open data" settings keeps on popping up, even after you've checked the button for it not to anymore.

Really hope they work on this some more - I like the feel of it and it searches and gives results for addresses quite fast.

Never seen this thread before, my bad.

As for my apps I can't do without:

Google Voice Search
Facebook
Twidroyd
MP3 Music Downloader - this is a true search engine which finds full songs and albums - no fscking demo tunes. :D
Google Maps
MapQuest (just trying it out today for the first time)
Youtube
MySettings
Gtalk
Gmail
AppBrain
Market
Stock Music Player
MyBB
XDA
Engadget
MangaBrowser
IMDb
Super KO Boxing 2
CNET News
Photobucket
SoundHound (screw shazam and it's paidness :p )
Mxit
Skype
Car Home
Goal.com
Google Goggles
AndFTP
eFile
Astro File Manager
Phone Copier
Barcode Scanner
Google Translate
Titanium Backup
MoveToSD
Androidify
QuickOffice
AppListBackup
TrafficInfo
Speedtest

And all of them on GoLauncher EX :D

Just download the renamed and tagged version, and install. That's the easiest way.
It will show up as a separate app to the official Google Maps.

Without un-installing the original Google Maps?
And does it work for sgs i9000? See that it's in the G1 section.

Correct. I use it on my own Galaxy S.
Just download "maps4.6.0.4686-brut-renamed-tagged.apk" and install. Works fine for me, I've done some navigating with it.

The Galaxy S GPS can be pretty inaccurate if you haven't got the Froyo update but that's another issue.

Got Froyo 2.2.1, quick question for ya - how do you install the .apk? :o

Ok - read up a bit - Astro File manager should do the trick.
Does this .apk work with 5.1 maps though?
I know you've said you're using it - but what version of Google maps are you using MaddMatt?

Maddmatt
18-02-2011, 09:08 PM
The *.apk is a hacked version of Google Maps 4.6. So when you install it you will still have your original 5.1 maps, and the hacked 4.6 maps as a separate app with "BRUT" written in red on the icon so you can tell it apart. Assuming you install the renamed tagged version.
I'm sure they are working on a hacked version of GM 5.1.

Astro file Manager should work to install the *.apk. But then so should the My Files app which is a standard app on the Galaxy S.

No Brut text on the icon? then you didn't download the tagged version.

Looks like my hacked maps app also FCs, maybe it's not compatible with the newest Samsung firmware. But that doesn't really matter, the hacked Navigation app works. And for maps you may as well use the official app, it's better than the old Maps 4.6 by far.

It might be cos I had an older brut version but when I installed official 5 beta the nav didn't work anymore in brut so I had to revert the official one back to 4 and then it worked.
