Which would guys say is a better Android phone to start with?

It depends what matters to you in a phone.

Galaxy S is an awesome media phone with the best screen on the market and excellent sound quality. My personal choice, I have one.

Desire HD comes with HTC Sense which may make it a better business phone, never used it myself though but that's the impression I get. It also looks better with the metal case, just don't drop it on your toes :p

Both have similar performing processors. The Galaxy S has a lag problem out of the box but new firmware will fix that, and some 3rd party custom firmware will make it blazing fast.
HTC phones seem to always get criticised for terrible sound quality, so if music is important I to you then they aren't for you. It's a major turn-off for me.

The Galaxy S seems to have a crappy GPS receiver, but if you mount it under the windscreen where it has a view of the sky it should be fine. Or if you use a Bluetooth GPS device with it.

The bad battery life of the Desire HD is a real deal breaker.

Get the Samsung.

I have been asking myself the same thing.

And for me that may be the deal breaker as well. Both phones are awesome and no doubt you would not be disappointed getting either one of them. But I plan on using mine quite a bit during the day so I need it to be able to last a full day with heavy-ish usage.

Samsung are great quality too. Very few people have reported a broken galaxy s considering over 5m have been sold worldwide.

Regarding battery life, I use mine heavily and generally am down to 20% by 10pm. I don't think the D Hd is an option if you plan on using it heavily, especially with the screen on for long periods of time. You can always get an extra battery though. Not sure about the Hd but for the sgs you can get batteries for about r30 inc shipping off ebay. Always carry a second one in my wallet. Quick and easy to switch

There is a nifty little feature on the Desire HD that I cannot wait to have....and that is a small blinking green light at the top of the phone if you had a missed call or received an email message.

I'm tired of having to unlock the screen of my iPhone each and every time I've been away for a few minutes, just to check if I had a missed call. That alone will save a lot of battery juice for me.

What's that saying about the little things in life? :)

There's a way to use to the galaxy s led's on the touch buttons as well :-). Requires some flashing though

That's HTC Sense for you. :p

When I had a jailbroken iPhone, you could trial a HTC Sense lockscreen app for your iPhone....dunno if you can still do it. Sense just gives you so much more & the customizations on the Desire HD & Z does look fantastic.

Galaxy Imo. Its AMOLED screen is amazing! Both Desire and Galaxy dont have the best of battery life. The widgets is also a cool thing there. galaxy has some good reviews and many have said its beter than the Desire. It has a nice big screen. One off putting thing tho is no flash on the camera. The touchwiz is slow but there are many ways to speed it up. So go with the Galaxy
Hope this helps

There is Adobe Reader, Kindle and Nook available as eReader. Not medical but you can load your PDFs with the Adobe Reader and also Kindle(AFAIK).

I have seen several medical reference apps, of course they are device independent and will work on any android.

For pdfs, there is adobe reader, think free office, and aldiko and many more. All device independent and will work on whichever android you choose

Led notifications have nothing to do with sense, led notification is a standard android feature. Some phones have an led, others don't... The community for other phones is also growing and there are tons of customization options for galaxy s and other androids.

I have a Galaxy S and the screen is bloody cracked :( I never dropped the phone, it has always been in its protective cover, the phone dosen't have a single crack on it, the gorilla glass is intact but the damn screen still cracked :wtf:. The phone is hardly a month old, I'm wondering if Vodacom's guarantee will cover this damage.

I use an app called NoLED on my Galaxy S. It is a free app and is available here:

Damn, I'd be pissed if they didn't fix that! Must be a manufacturing defect. If you take it in (which I think you should) please post back about how it went.

HTCSense vs TouchWiz

Below Average battery life vs Average battery life

The only reason why im in the market for a DHD is because battery life isnt a deal breaker for me personally.

if you're the type of person who goes on 2day hikes in the middle of cedar burg every weekend then don't get a DHD

but if you actually live near power just charge it and stop complaining gosh!

I think DHD wins. (besides the battery life isnt as bad as people are making it out to be)

bigger, non amoled screen. smaller capacity battery.

uhmmm, no comment.

just don't get a DHD if you are a heavy user who tends to be away from a power source for extended periods of time. otherwise, she's A WINNER! YAY!

Galaxy S definately has a better screen, sound quality and battery life, but...
doesnt have flsah for the camera(should eb a standard feature), build quality is a bit plasticky, and TouchWiz isn't as great as it can be.

The DHD does have its shortcomings, but all of them acn be managed quite well. battery life can be controlled by mointoring your running applications and for maximum battery life, switching off the 3G/GPS , as well as dimming the screen.

Still am sold on the DHD :)

DHD for me 2! I will of course buy myself a USB battery/pocket battery, like the Choiix Power Fort (http://www.burnedin.com/review/choiix-power-fort-review) just for in case, you never know.

I have a DHD.

It is AMAZING!

Sense is miles ahead of touchwiz and the screen is brilliant!

I am a heavy user and my phone EASILY lasts a day and a half. The trick is just to use the ambient light sensor.

I mean the display is brilliant regardless of it not being amoled. It has a s-lcd screen.

It might not be as amazing as a amoled but it is still great. You won't notice differences unless you have the two phones side by side.

:)

I just mean let the light sensor adjust the screen brightness automatically. It usually keeps it at dimmer levels but adjusts quickly without you noticing the transition. It should be the default setting anyway.

IIRC it actually drain more power than just manually adjusting it to say 30% and then leaving it there.

In my experience it has definitely improved the battery. I had it at 40% constantly and compared it to when the light sensor was on.

I personally noticed a marked improvement in battery performance.

10%, easily.

IF I look at all the poor SGS owners waiting for the 2.2 update, that would be reason enough to go with the DHD. Froyo rocks.

Shayd
08-01-2011, 12:36 PM
Well seeing that samsung south africa has confirmed the official 2.2 upgrade via kies for february this should no longer be an issue. Considering that the international firmware had issues it is understandable the delay. Personally I don't care about running the latest firmware all the time as long a I an on a major release like froyo and stable firmware does get pushed to me eventually. I am happy.

hey guys i'm upgrading soon and its between the two(favouring DHD so far) but the battery is worrying me. i'm inlove with my music and listen to music on my current phone(w995) atleast 4 maybe 5 hours a day. will the DHD cope?

CrazYmonkeY159
17-01-2011, 09:21 AM
I don't know about music, but i played like 3 hours of angry birds (wifi was on aswell) and lost about 25-30% of charge.

The only way that one could choose between the DHD and SGS is if you choose the phone based on your personal preferences. the differences of the two devices have been layed out for you to choose. for me, i find that the battery is OK, if you forget to charge your phone at night you're screwed for the next day.

my close mate has an SGS, did an outdoor test of the screens on max brightness, the SGS just won (in my opinion but not by much) indoors though, both screens are perfectly OK, obviously the colours on the SGS pop more. the HTC feels more sturdy and well built than the SGS' plastic though. at the end of the day, if battery is a deal breaker for you, you can always chuck a custom ROM on your SGS if you're comfortable with it hey. the beauty of root.
Hope this helps

Ive had my DHD for just under 2 weeks, loving it.

Edit : to answer your question ironman i find it easy coping since im infront of a computer for 40-50% of my day, so i just charge it there. I'm pretty sure that it can handle 4hours of music although maybe i should test it :)
