How long before people start to steal these in order to travel from Johannesburg to Pretoria?

Serious question: why would they steal them in order to travel from Johannesburg to Pretoria? I moved up to Jhb not too long ago, so not really clued up about this.

I think that he's refering to the proposed chip system in number plates, to pay tolls. These new plates are simply due to Gauteng running out of combinations for plates, the tollong system has not been put in place yet.

the new number plates will be used for the new toll gate system that is span over the N1, it will cost you something like R50c a km to travel. Basically instead of having the old conventional one they decided to build a bridge over the N1 so it doesn't disturb traffic, your number plate will now be a viable piece of metal for people who cannot afford this or the Gautrain.

Thought you were thinking about this. The article doesn't mention anything about these plates having the chips though, so I think that's a problem for the future only still.

They have decided to collaborate with other provinces in regards to chipped/RFID numberplates so they will all use the same system/technology so that still a long way off.

"Our government has noted the ease with which number plates can be illegally obtained to conduct criminal activities."
Yeah, so instead of addressing the real problem (crime) us ordinary citizens are burdened with another useless preventative measure.

The fail is strong with this thread! The original article was ok, but the uninformed answers boggle my mind.
The new plates are being issued because Gauteng has run out of possible numbers, not because of crime. They are higher security than the old ones, but that's not why they were introduced.
The chips will never be used to pay tolls. There's no way a passive RFID can be scanned at that speed, SANRAL has already said that they'll be using separate wireless transceivers, the tolls will be functional before the chips, and users from other (less advanced) provinces need to be able to use the roads without their plates containing a chip.
The chip is being used as an additional security measure, because it's allegedly impossible to forge them (yeah, right). Kind of like the individual serial number on each note of paper money.
On topic: I think the plates look ok. Nicer than the old ones. Don't know if it'll be easier or harder to remember 2-2-2 compared to 3-3.

You obviously haven't had to pay for new plates?ROFL, nobody is forcing you to replace your existing plates ......... yet :D
Currently, it's only new vehicles and registrations that need the new plates.

Yeah, but this is for new cars and reregistered cars only (according to the reports so far). So you'd have to buy new plates anyway.

Yup and this is when we start discussing the "On the road" fee charged by dealers....who absorbs the extra cost? Not the dealer old man...:(

Of course, this cost excludes the cost of the transponder, which is yet to be implemented fully.

I was reading somewhere that the plates would cost R330. We are currently paying R120 for our plastic plates.

And for those getting those new plates, don't forget to pop rivet them as there are some scumbags already stealing them and selling them to the scrap metal dealers.
