I've noticed one worrying issue with both Firefox and Thunderbird.
The Local Settings information storage on windows can get corrupt if your PC shuts down suddenly.
In fact, it's the only two applications I've used that have a problem with that.
I've lost my bookmarks with Firebird once.
I've not just lost my address book from Thunderbird and have to use an older backup.
This is really a fairly serious problem, specifically for email - if your inbox gets corrupted for instance.
Wonder if this bug has been reported ?

Been using "Bookmark Backup" extension since having been subjected to the same FireFox problem once before. Luckily only 1 day after importing from IE, so I could re-import w/o loss

i use thunderbird, but i also have incredimail, you can import all other info from tbird etc but you can not export from incredimail, so what i do is import all data from tbird/outlook etc and even if i have a sudden power off, incredimaiil retains the data....works for me
I use the Bcc thing in ThunderTweety, to send a copy of every outgoing email that I send, to the same GMail account that I use for pop3, just set a filter to archive Bcc copies, that way you have an ongoing GMail backup of all emails [except drafts], I am a bit annoyed with ThunderTweety when it comes to contacts - considering experimenting with that LDAP server setting thing...
just try incredimail,it has some adware, but ease of use noyhing beats it
o and it is also free.....incredimail.com,and it has a repair function aswell

My housemate lost all his contacts with Thunderbird -- er, I mean Thunderfox. :D
It likes a clean shutdown, and with Windows, that can be a problem sometimes.
