I'd like to take the wife and kids on a trip on the Gautrain. I figured that it would be an experience for them to do the whole thing using public transport. The idea is to take a bus (or train) from Pretoria to Sandton and then catch the Gautrain to OR Tambo, eat something at the airport and then reverse.

I'm situated in the Moot area in Pretoria and the only public transport we have here is the Tshwane bus service that runs between the suburbs and Church Square so that's probably my starting point. So how does one get from Church Square to Sandton? We can always walk from Church Square to Pretoria Station and catch the train from there but I don't think that's on with two smallish kids.

Any suggestions?

Wait 6 months until it extends to Pretoria.

Ja, that's probably easiest but I reckon the other modes of transport will be part of the experience. My kids have never been on public transport apart from the odd plane trip so this would be something new to them.

Don't forget that there will be a feeder bus service to the stations. Check out the routes on the Gautrain site.

Edit: They appear to have removed the bus route maps.

Also remember that it is R90 per person one way to OR Tambo

R100 according to the site. An R800 excursion for a family of 4.

Ouch! That's a bit too much for my budget. So how would one incorporate a one-way Gautrain trip into this?

Drive to Sandton. Drop of Wife and kids at Gautrain. Meet them at ORTIA. Have meal. Drive home. Still works out pretty costly.

Just go to another station, Sandton to Marlobo (or the cheapest station, can't remember which the R16 one is) and back. Will cost you R128, or the other way around then you can eat in Sandton at Nelson Mandela square as it is right opposite the station.

isn't there like a business express train from pta to jhb?

but once in this region, catch a gautrain bus (which only operate during the week afaik), do the train ride which will cost you r100 pp if you go to the airport

you can get off at rhodesfield or marlboro which is way, way cheaper but there is nothing to do in those areas
