"Apple has launched an iPod portable video player that can screen music videos and hit TV shows for fans on the move. "
Now I would really, really love one of these babies... ;)

Let me stress that - legitimate tv downloads. So all those ignorant winers who shout abuser at people who download tv series on a regular basis can kindly go stick it. You can now download legitimate tv shows, music, software so a minimum 30gb international cab is going to be a necessity.
Course mweb is going to have a cow but stuff em too. :D

Er...you never use your iPod? You do of course realise you are in the minority here (Of the people who have iPods of course)
And the new iPod costs pretty much the same as the older iPods. They can just play Music Video's and TV shows now. Not that I think it is the greatest feature, but nevertheless

TheSaint : What are you talking about? The new iMac? Yes it has iSight built into it now so it can do pictures and video
Who cares, I can get a similar product (with a 5cm screen instead of the 6cm screen the iPod has), with 20GB storage, USB host, all-in-one card reader, TV output jacks, remote control and no proprietry software......for less than R2000.
iPod's are a brilliant marketing success but I wouldn't waste my money on them.

Pox : The problem is that it doesn't look and feel like an iPod. It will also not work with iTunes and iTMS. Only an iPod does. And 20GB is pretty small...
You sounded very similar to the guy who announced the iPod on Slashdot when it was first released
20Gb of music should be enuff :)
I just feel that if I can get something that does pretty much the same thing without the brand name and at 1/2 the price, then that's the one I would buy.
...not that I would buy either, I use my cell for music (1GB memory )...or if I want to watch movies then I use my laptop which gets I lug around everywhere.

Itis not a case of "something that does pretty much the same thing without the brand name and at 1/2 the price", it costs slightly less, but with less space than a iPod
But fair enough about the Cell, each to his own
erm..how much does the ipod video thingy cost anyways? (probably should have found that at earlier)

I'm not going to invest in a new iPod - it doesnt support firewire and the older titanium powerbook that I currently use as an entertainment unit only has usb 1.1.
Also before anyone says usb2 is faster than firewire - sure it is on paper but for sustained reading or writing (ie copying across large files like video, or music libraries, or using the iPod as an external hdd) firewire beats it hands down.
erm..how much does the ipod video thingy cost anyways? (probably should have found that at earlier)AFAIK $299 for the 20gb and $399 for the 60gb - same as for the current non video models I think.
totally off topic but I just figured out what AFAIK stands for :D
...lordy I'm bored...

This would be great, but what about the situation in SA? If a new episode of Lost becomes available the next day after airing in the US, what then about downloading it in SA where it has not aired yet?
I hope they sort this out. A service where I can download say Lost the next day if my wife messed up the recording would be very useful. This would not be a p2p download I assume so it would use the minimum amount of traffic.

As long as the download goes over an unshapped port it should be faster than something like bit torrent and as you said it would be mono-directional. On a 1024 line you'd have your episode in an hour (much like torrent-box).
So sodd you Mnet - there are viable alternatives around the corner. :p

You won't be able to download Lost from the sites in the US bec it detects which country you're from and won't allow you to connect.

I'm in two minds about the whole show downloading thing. If I download a show that only airs on TV here in say, 6 months time, great! But what about when that time comes and it appears on TV here - I would not have any shows to watch since I am home watching TV during prime time and would be seeing shows that I saw a few months back. Does not add much value to my DSTV subscription.

Suppose (on the off chance knowing dstv) that there were 2 shows on at the same time that you wanted to watch. Having already seen the one you could watch the other.

I don't know how that will work. Sure it will work if you do it that way???

I bought me the U2 iPod about 2 months ago and don't think I'll be upgrading to the new one. Would have rather had the new video one but my bad luck. I will rather buy me a PSP which I think is a much better buy

How can people watch a video on such a small screen?
I could see people watching it on the PSP...but an iPod?
