Hi

You can buy an upgrade version of Norton Internet Security 2006 on the US site for $50 (or boxed version $50+$9 shipping). On the Middle East /Africa Symantec site the product is $70, and is only available as a download.

I think that its a ripoff. What does the rest of SA think?

Boss... Norton is the Microsoft of the Antivirus world and the Telkom of Communications World... Just wait for the microsoft Untivirus if you are using windows and hopefully... you wont have to pay for it.

Rather look into Mcafee Enterprise.

thx Jet

I have not tested Mcafee. Does it have a Parental Filter?... I have tested several products, and so far only Norton works.

I really do not like Norton, for the same reasons but for Parental Control, in my experience, they have no equal.

I don't want to pay $$$ and find McAfee is broken like the rest of them (ZoneAlarm Security Suite; ParentFilter; CyberSitter: all broken).

Cheers,

murray654: Click here (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=29806) to find out why you shouldn't use Norton and what some better alternatives are.

As for the Parental Filter, i'm sure you can find a seperate free tool somewhere out there that will work just as well. It's really not worth having Norton just for the parental filter.

There isn't - I have looked.

I think most of them rely on a fast Internet Connection to check each URL against a database held on a central server (probably in the states), and when the connection times out, they block every site. Norton has an internal database which it checks, and does not require a fast connection to download updates.

What is Matrix? By comparison Makro are offering 2005 UG version for R299 (this is product that is being dumped because 2006 version is out). That makes the matrix price very dodgy, or maybe it is also 2005 product being dumped.

I am sitting in a Family Resort, and I can not afford to allow other peoples kids access to porn on a public computer, hence my need for a working parental filter - so far Norton Internet Security offers the best solution, I am only concerned that the whole of Africa is being ripped off.

The norton AV is rubbish: I agree with some people who posted here, which is why I disable it and use AVG. AVG has no parental control features, so I need NIS for that purpose.

Thanks, GuRu but all that site offers is information for parents:

"Open, honest communication is always preferable " and "Investigate filtering technology. There are server-based filtering options offered through your ISP as well as computer-based filtering software that you can administer yourself. These technologies can be helpful - but keep in mind that they're not foolproof and are no substitutes for parental supervision"

Been there, done that. And yesterday I downloaded NIS 2006 from the US symantec site. I was expecting my credit card to be rejected, becuase the site is for US and Canada only. This has happened before, but the transaction went through: looking forward to another 2 years with NIS (not!): hopefully by the time it expires some of the other products have matured. What would have been 1st prize is a filter that works with ZoneAlarm. With NIS you have to use the Norton Personal Firewall... :(

Why don't you setup an IPCop (http://www.ipcop.org) box with something like Dans Guardian or Cop+ (http://firewalladdons.sourceforge.net) ?

Why don't you setup an IPCop box with something like Dans Guardian or Cop+ ?Maybe because I am a windows freak. I had a linux box (with 3 hard drives) once. It was great, had IMAP which I miss. There was a bad storm and it broke, and I could not recover any data & nobody could help me either. I had to take it to Durban back to the guy who installed it (which is a 3 hour drive), so I reformatted one of the drives (2 of 'em were fried) and installed Windows (to save myself the drive)... The broken hard drives are still in there somewhere.

The IPCop box is basically an appliance. You shove the CD in, boot from it, install everything in 10 minutes, and you access the interface via a browser.

The only reason you'd need to touch the console is to briefly install the firewalladdons server. After that you don't need to touch it again.

It's VERY simple to use.

I am not interested in Linux at this time. If I find the time maybe I will try again, but not too keen after being burned the first time.

I dropped Norton and now use the free edition of AVG from grisoft.com for as long as I can remember - never had any problems since I started using it.
