More than 2000 South African taxpayers earned more than five million rand each during the 2009/10 tax year, according to a document released by the SA Revenue Service and National Treasury on Wednesday.

I would imagine those kinds of earnings are e.g. people earning dividends and not necessarily a salary?
Unless of course it refers to top CEOs, etc which can probably earn that kind of money.

The document reflected taxable income. Dividends are tax free thus the figure of 2000 would be much higher if one looked at gross income.

Put it in US$, this is really a very small number of people ..in any event its probably mostly "cadre's" and some old money ;)

If they "earned" it as stated then good for them, they deserve it. Nothing wrong with being rewarded for a job well done! Some of these CEO's work 16 hour days and they are very dedicated/addicted to their companies. Hats off that they are still in SA.
If, however, they were paid from taxpayer coffers for being a useless cadre/comrade employed at some money sucking parastatal/parliament, and sipping johnny walker every lunchtime for a living, then they should be ashamed and deserve to be lynched!

On a bit more serious note, I think that there are quite some more than 2000. Probably quite a lot of people who earn this ammount aren't reporting their full ammount earned, if anything at all. :P
